    ...and it's been that way a long time. If you're the sort of user that would care in any way about Core technologies beyond the "ooh" factor, the i-line isn't marketed at you.

    And busting a shell doesn't need 1024*768.

    Finally, someone mentions Quark's -stupid- licensing controls. We DO have a site license, but instead of keying our copies of QXP like we do everything else, we have to maintain a f*cking license server. This is an UNneccessary added burden in any production environment's support structure.

    Put another way, the RIAA is not suing because you did not buy music. It is not suing the people that downloaded music. It is suing the people that _shared_ music, and setting the price accordingly.


    ...so give me a BT client that doesn't allow uploads. That way, by your logic, I'll be immune from prosecution.

    In fact, we're eagerly awaiting a November vote on a San Francisco city measure that will, if successful, make it illegal for civilians to posess a firearm with barrel length less than ten inches (at which point you'll need to be surrendering your firearms for state-sanctioned disposal.)

    This is easily more than 99% of all handguns.

    CA regularly and routinely regulates the shit out of anything that looks dangerous, regardless of its specifications or ballistic potential.

    Sorry, back to topic: I love my home state very much, but on matters gun: fuck California's law, lawmakers, and aggressively unclued voters; thanks to these fine, fine people, not only are my firearms-ownership rights second-class to those enjoyed in other states, but now my worldwide web-use rights are, too.

    I think resetting the PRAM doesn't do what you think it does.

    -- Have you updated the firmware?

    -- Have you reset the NVRAM?

    Failing to mention attempting either of these things suggests that you should have someone experienced in Mac troubleshooting look at the machine.

    Zapping the PRAM doesn't reset the OF passwd. Assuming a password is set, you need physical access to the mainboard.

    A four-key-at-boot workaround would make OF passwd sercurity a bit useless, wouldn't it?

    It used to be that if your Mac broke down and you were a business, an independent (but Apple certified) technician, maybe even one on your premises and employed by you, could ring up Apple, get the replacement part (it could even be done electronically, way back in the mid 90's, gasp!) and you'd be in business the next day.
    There haven't been 'independent' certified Apple techs for at least fifteen years that could order parts on their own, if there ever even were. Those 'techs' you'd call worked for a service company with an Apple contract.

    It cost me $200 for the training materials and $300 for two tests. Doesn't sound like you've looked into the involved costs at all in the last decade.

    The best they can manage are "regional" business liasons, and they don't remember you from a goddamn hole in the wall.
    For every bad experience, there are plenty good. My reps are just fine.
    and ONLY RESELLERS can order parts OR have access to Apple's internal technical support database OR perform "warranty" repairs.
    Wrong. You just need to enter a "self-servicing" agreement with Apple and have -one- ACDT-certifed greasemonkey in your company. You get -full- access to GSX, manuals, parts, etc.

    I'm one of those greasemonkeys, which is how I know.
    and you can pretty much foget any data on the system...and how many of us have the facilities to back up 60GB? Not me.
    Your failure to perform your own backups isn't Apple's (or any company's) fault.
    As mentioned before- independent techs can't get parts. Customers certainly can't.
    If you can't even maintain backups of your own data, do you really think anyone wants to spend the time/effort required to ship you a mainboard and show you how to install it?
