No. It certainly doesn't seem to me to be the case that government should be about the LCD unless you believe that democracy, in its current form, is how all government should be.
"Oh, woe is me, shall I be Vulcan or Human because it isn't possible for me to forge my own distinct identity, I must only belong to one race, err, species!"
I find these comments rather insulting. It wasn't easy growing up half-Vulcan, half-Human. It's easy to say I should forge my own identity, but Humans and Vulcans are inherently social and I have inherited that from both of my parents. There is no half-way house. Suppressing my emotions requires discipline and constant vigilance and I can't show my emotions one day and hide them the next. Showing emotion among Vulcans causes difficulties. Suppressing emotion among humans also causes difficulties. So if I was to engage in social activity, I had to choose one path or the other, and I chose Vulcan. This doesn't mean that I don't have social interactions with Humans, but it does mean that in those interactions I act as a Vulcan, and Humans deal with me on those terms. It's not a 100% comfortable situation, but it is tolerable for people all round.
And I don't find your comments about Romulans logical. The Romulans are our brothers. Why would we not desire to bring them into the same fold?
Government, at it's core, should be about a lowest common denominator...
Democratic government, at it's core, should be about a lowest common denominator... There are many other forms of government so it's clear that the LCD has nothing to do with government's core.
I guess you didn't read Leviticus 20:13. I'm suppose that "progressive Christian" actually means a Christian who only reads the bits of the Bible they find convenient.
Yeah, the computing industry is full of people who resent smart programmers who don't program by the book. That's fine. Every programmer eventually finds their own level and there's no shortage of startup businesses who need web page designers.
X says that thrown objects do move in a straight line until they run out of energy and then they fall down, in a straight line. I hypothesize that X is wrong. I throw a ball. It moves in a nice parabola. Therefore my hypothesis is proved correct.
Yeah, there's nothing like having people whose earnings are more than those of 99.9999% of the population making decisions for the other 99.9999% who earn less. But of course, we're talking about America, where political merit is measured in dollars.
I was actually pretty surprised when I watched an old Star Trek NG episode the other day and there was Hawking playing poker with Data, Einstein and Newton on the holodeck. I'm not sure who, among today's physicists, will be remembered in 300 years time, but I'm pretty sure Hawking won't be among them. A few theorems about black holes doesn't count for much in the big scheme of things.
Take your coincidence meter in for servicing, it's badly in need of recalibration. Until you do so you'll be making all kinds of bizarre claims about coincidences that will make you seem pretty weird.
Wasn't the "Jesus wants me to save my virginity for marriage" enough of a tipoff? Or was she one of those types who think virginity means anything goes apart from intercourse?
Claiming that not all "unemployed people, disabled people, housewives, single mothers, home healthcare aids" are innocent doesn't imply that they are all guilty. I suggest you start reading here.
unemployed people, disabled people, housewives, single mothers, home healthcare aids
Next time I'm going to commit a crime I must remember to make sure that I'm unemployed, disabled, a housewife or a healthcare aid (sic) so that I can win the sympathy of the/. crowd.
I'd say the company is a real entity, still actually producing. Your "intellectual property" is pretty imaginary.
That a company is a real entity is clear. But that a company is someone's property is just as much "imaginary" as intellectual property. There is no property inherent in a company that makes it belong to one person or another, that exists only in the network of relations of the people in the society in which the company lies.
Property and intellectual property is much the same thing. Just as a government will protect your monopoly of intellectual property for a period of time, governments will protect your physical property. They do so for the same reason, because the government itself profits. Economies with good property rights, both physical and intellectual, tend to be much stronger than those without. So those in political power can expect to reap greater benefits if they protect the property of their subjects or voters. The main difference between intellectual and physical property rights is the way these are limited. For intellectual property the limits are temporal - they last a certain time. For physical property rights, only a certain percentage of your property is protected - the rest is called 'tax'.
I've stockpiled original boxes of all 35 Infocom adventure games. I keep them in a sealed box to keep them in good condition. When I retire I'll be working my way through them one by one. Even if I'm quadraplegic ony able to use my tongue to control a computer, I plan to finish all of these games.

...Microsoft learn a thing or two from the people who make plastic packaging?
Does it still have the incredibly patronizing "My Computer"?

Real crackers don't use obscurity to hide their attacks. They give warnings of exactly what they're going to do, and still manage to do it.

...to do is go into /. and I can mark anyone as my friend? I can have a million friends for nothing.

I think that's the point.
Hmmm...this sounds like a fun game. I'll see if I can beat 3k.
What?
