lilypond with denemo (http://denemo.sourceforge.net) makes a pretty good Free music notation system. Both programs are installable through Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net).
Why is this article in the apple category? It does mention the iTMS along with other services, but it could just as easily fit under a music category or RIAA category. I have noticed this same odd categorization of articles with only slight relations to apple in the past few days. Slashdot is not macslash, so it doesn't have any significant apple slant, right? I don't have any strong opinions on the matter, the Apple category is as good as any other, I just find it an interesting Slashdot quirk; something worth pointing out.
Why not call it GNU/Solaris? Because Solaris is not the kernel. It is the name of the whole operating system. So maybe it should be Solaris GNU? But then again, Debian GNU/Linux is often shortened to Debian, so Solaris can justifiably be Solaris.
I sometimes just call GNU/Linux GNU and leave off the Linux, depending on the context. When someone is talking about kernels, or drivers, or something in comparison with a GNU/Linux OS, calling it just 'Linux' is appropriate since the kernel is what may be the most important component. But when speaking of higher level things like development, one can say, "I like GNU OSs more than Microsoft ones for writing perl." without a hitch. When speaking of the system fit together as a whole, GNU/Linux is fine. But, the obvious pronounciation nuisance justifiably keeps people from shouting GNU/Linux in the streets:)
I just can't stop playing it! It is just so exciting to be able to match up all of those wonderful towelletes that I recognize! I think these Moist Towellete collectors are on to something. They really have found a special art.
Considering that Microsoft has one of the biggest lobbying groups,if not the biggest (I don't remember), it really is no surprise. It will take persistance and a unified front to keep MS from blocking it. Unfortunately, politics isn't about what makes sense or what is best for the people. But if enough citizens complain to their representative, they have a better chance of listening.
"Personally, I hope that Apple will use this aquisition to free up music and maybe some more of their own IP and use it to further hardware sales. Irony is receiving a spam entitled 'Tired of getting junk mail?"
Before we start talking about how Apple will use this acquisition properly, why not check to see if this is even real? All of the evidence points to this whole rumor being a hoax. Someone probably noticed Apple lawyers talking to Universal people and asummed that an acquisistion was taking place, while they were probably just mulling out the details of how Universal music will be distributed in Apple's new music service.
To my knowledge, this is the first non-free(as in beer) commercial browser derived in any way from khtml. Omni must be pretty confident that webcore is a solid and advantagous choice for the future of omniweb. This says something about the maturity of khtml.
This guy has an interesting and in depth platform. I wish our real world politicians would go at it with this kind of vigor and detail. He is well educated and has been working actively within Debian for the past few years and has real purpose and usefuleness. I wish i could say the same about bureaucrats.
It is pretty cool that another well known company found a way to get something out of a copyleft licensing scheme. This reminds me Id Software's similar strategy of Freeing their games after they get a bit out of date but are still useful. O'Reilly is attempting to do the same thing with books. One more reason why I like O'Reilly:)
I forgot to mention that I have a mac and that I am waiting for that version. I am just going to borrow a friend's CD. My friends all bought it and stopped playing it a long while ago. So, its fair game for me.
Spending Friday night, Saturday morning and afternoon trying to get OpenGL hardware acceleration working. And all Sunday calling around to my Windows using friends begging for a copy of NWN:)
What exactly does this mean? Doesn't Apple usually give unlimited client licenses or is there something different going on here? "10 client licenses" seems like something that you see on a windowsXP box.
Computer cases haven't changed a whole lot in the last 5 years ever since they discovered the stylish case market. Trends have changed a little, windowed cases and flat black designs are popular. I would like to see more truly innovative designs like the Shuttle PCs and other stylish cases with a purpose.
I think they changed it to "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" to make sure that us American's can be sure that it is, in fact, a movie. Who knows, it could be terrorist propaganda or some mix between country music and old school bebop. How should we know?
This article was not very well written and just tries to ride the hype of the startling VPC news. The guy didn't do much technical research and envisions Windows software running seemlessly on OS X just like Classic apps. The author apparently didn't understand that Bochs is an x86 emulator and cannot run along side OS X without huge modifications to its code and Apple's. Even worse, he called bochs a Windows emulator. Bochs has nothing to do with windows or emulating it. It emulates a simple Intel based computer independant of the operating system. It is very hard to get WIndows running on it. Especially on the Mac. There are 5 page tutorials on getting it working. I really doubt Apple could get any use out of Bochs. It simply isn't designed for the use that everyone wants out of it. It is primarily for OS debugging and other developement uses. It is NOT a replacement for a PC emulator geared towards home users wanting to run windows.
DotGNU's Portable.net [dotgnu.org] has MS CLI and Java support. It is portable to virtually every platform, as its name implies. Im glad to see more of these next generation virtual machines in the making.
We setup linux in one of our labs using old computers that otherwise were useless. Using ltsp [ltsp.org], we managed to make usable workstations for word processing and internet access. Based on our experience, linux definitely was cheaper than the expensive windows terminals and citrix licenses.
For all we know, he is running a BSD kernel with GNU system software. The point is, it doesn't much matter what kernel he is using. We can't even tell. So why write it down?
And I thought a binary calculator on an FPGA was really cool. With classic arcade games running on everything but toasters, no wonder arcades are having trouble staying in business.
I wonder what the real meat of the bill is (or will end up being). This might just be some candy added in to gain enough support to pass. Situations like this do happen often.

It looks like the industry is so desperate, they have to resort to name calling and hollow accusations. What a sad state of affairs.

Good luck Oregon.

I will by the Mac version when it comes out. I have a linux box and a mac. I would rather have it for my powerbook than for my ol linux box.

you know, that X squared OS by Apple they show on the 2013 wristband is nicknamed Parabola.

So THATs why $5 was paid to Slashdot without me remembering!
