So if lightning strikes the clock at 8:00 am, it will be stopped at 1:00, and no one will be able get their time machine back to the future...

On a similar note, my high school computer science teacher was equally retarted. Her previous "job in the industry" was a content provider for the old AOL bbs, and her knolege has not advanced beyond that point. I frequently lost credit for doing assignments 2 or 3 weeks before they were assigned instead of listening to the lecture where she explained how to write the program I had written 2 or 3 weeks ago.

So when I added a couple lines of javascript to the school's site to display embarassing (read: photoshoped) pictures of her and the principal the day after graduation, she had to have a student fix it. Teaches a web design class, can't find a two-line javascript statement. Oh, and she still suspects the student (a Junior at the time) because they were able to find and fix the problem...

There are a few simple ways around the "grey goo" problem:

    1) Put a cap on how many copies of itself a bot can make.

    2) Add some sort of mechanism to the bots to only allow duplication when there are less than some number of bots in the surrounding area.

    3) Only allow bots to reproduce when told to do so by Humans.

    4) provide som sort of "master kill signal" (i.e. a specific radio frequency) that will cause all bots reciving it to cease functioning.

    5) Any of several other ideas I didn't just think of in the past 2 min.

And how do we know the goo would be grey, anyway?

  25. I trust technology on Pentagon to Track American Consumer Purchases? · · Score: 1

I would trust a database such as this, if it was truly anonomous and only released names when there is really a genuine cause for alarm. (i.e. John Doe buys 20 gallons of kerosine, 100 lb. of fertilizer, and rents a truck...) Assuming the government is trustworthy (and I'm not sure, there) the system would be used only to alert authorities to potential terrorist activity.

Of course such a system would have to be connected to the rest of the world through some medium, to be able to collect data, and if it's on a large network, it can and will be cracked. So perhaps it's not such a good idea after all...
