    Actually it's not.

    Xbox (as used in this article) with a modded 128MB RAM and larger/faster hard drive + $300 retail (+ mod time)

    Xbox = $149
    HD = $100
    Memory and mod kit = $50
    Mac OSX 10.2 (as used in article) = $50
    Keyboard = $20
    Mouse = $10

    Other materials such as soldering iron, wiring, CDs to burn Linux and Pear PC onto = $50

    17" Screen or 19" TV $75 (minimum)

    At this - you don't get easy wireless, iApps, a combo drive that burn CDs AND view DVDs and minus a whole host of other features.

    You can get a nice refurb eMac 1Ghz and sometimes 1.25GHZ directly from Apple for $529 shipped on a regular basis in the special deals section.

    Is it just me or would you take a 4% profit per machine instead of a 23% profit per machine on a deal like this if you were Apple? Which actually points out a small fact. Apple still makes an average of 12% on educational sales (even more if you factor in Applecare and service plans) I think if they are serious about enterprise and education, they'd take 3-4% profit. I also think that they don't realize how many of these workers would love them and buy them for home use.

    If Apple could just do this and be successful in ONE corporate entity, it would make a huge impact on other enterprise deals. The fedex deal fell through - they were only able to sell them 20% of their total computer purchase. (Which replaced about 30% of all the computers at fedex worldwide)

    I imagine that AT&T will go with Linux though.

    Boy, isn't this a good reason to have a headless iMac?

    Holding because you can isn't good reason to hold it. It is a requirement for any repair that I get an exchange part if a new part is used or purchased (period) - this is truly so someone else may benefit from the part if said part is out of warranty and hard to find or unreasonably priced.

    Take the iMac DV slot drives for instance $239 service part - these drives can be had for as little as $40. They can also be fixed pretty easily or refurbed.

    My question, as a tech, why did YOU want to keep the old part?

    I always keep the old part as PART of the service of fixing.

    Concerning Apple parts - out of warranty parts are usually astronomical in price. I can usually fix anything - some just may take too much time and it's cheaper just to order a new part.

    I also may be able able to use "your broken unit" to repair other units and possibly resell on eBay or my website or in my store.

    Apple used "trade ins/exchanges" to resell to parts dealers like Preowned Electronics and Sun Remarketing - so sources would be available for years to come for Apple parts and service sources.

    I'm slightly different than Apple, in that, I don't charge absorbadant prices for replacement parts or for repair really, but I do rely on trade in/exchange as part of my "fee".
