There is a difference between being able to get a product and actually buying it. To say that 99% of Australians will have high speed broadband is ridiculous.

Most of the time it can be more affordable to buy a new car.

A $500 car is going to cost you a few grand a year in maintenence.

Car analogies dont work. Actually the Wii could be like buying a 4cylinder Honda/Accura - it does not have the raw grunt but if its light enough you'll get decent performance and as a bonus games (gas) will be cheaper.

See, they really dont work very well.

  9. Re: road death analogy on CyberTerrorism - Reality or FUD? · · Score: 1
This analogy is fun - It would be like introducing sweeping changes in the following manner:

Bush and Co come up with draconian laws to reduce the threat of motorist terrorism-

    * Anyone may now be randomly stopped and their cars put through a safety test - if you are found with bald tires, oil leaks, suspension problems etc you can be charged with conspiracy to commit motorist terrorism.

    * Random breath tests and saliva drug tests (as seen in countries like Australia)

    * Electronic surveillance mandatory in all vehicles - if the cars computer and GPS determines you are speeding or driving dangerously you can have police turn up at your home and interview you then issue fines/arrest you.

Of course this is the USA and many of these measures are seen as unconstitutional, so during the debate several ammendments are written fixing up some of the privacy aspects and requiring judicial oversight etc etc. Then in the middle of the night congress is given the final version of the bill which they think is the ammended version but it's actually had all the dodgy bits put back into it by the attourney general and they pass it without reading it because it's essential to the countries future.

"mobile phones are going to kill off the gameboy" - it never happened.

at the end of the day people buy something for one task because it makes the interface simpler. sure my mobile can play mp3s but i'd much rather have something which is designed to play music as its sole function. just look at another example: camera phones. my phone can take pictures but the interface is clunky and the quality sucks. i dont know anyone who wouldn't prefer using a simple digital camera.

its a jack of all trades but master of none situation.

I really have to go ahead an rant on that point. I fail to see that EVER being the case. Over the last decade or so I have watched everything get privatised/deregulated in Australia.

The bank got sold... bank fees went up. (the latest is a 50 cent fee for using internet banking)

The gas company got sold... the price of gas doubled.

The Airline got sold, prices went up AND the Australians were fired because jobs went overseas.

The milk companies got deregulated.... the price of milk quadripled.
