  1. Small V. Wide Use on Linux vs. Windows: Choice vs. Usability · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, we can argue this point until we are blue in the face. We are all geeks (gee geeks on slashdot???) and look at thewhole tech world much differently thanthe everyday layman (see: technoweenie) who doesn't understand the differences and just wants a quick product that works.

YEah, Microshit OS change looks with every revison, But if you get one revision (XP for exmaple) their is no choice upon start up for the look of it. You actually have to learn how to change from the XP look to the "Classic Windows" look, and the majority of people out there don't want to worry about it. They just want something they can start up and use (at least until Windows barfs on them).

The thing that this aritcle misses the point on is that there is a distro that works in a similar fashion in Lindows( I have not used it, but have heard from people who do). So the whole argument winds up being moot anyways.

Personally, Red Hat has a good start on making and everyday friendly distro with BlueCurve, but it still needs some refining. The Multi desktops need to be (especially for us geeks) otherwise we will eventually be complaining about the desktop because its not what we want. Then again, in the end its the back end of the OS that really matters.

    Never Mind.

Well, I guess then that Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and a host of other all time great performers were not Artists.

Lets get real. at one point in time there were song writers and there were the performers, and it was the standard.

The difference between the greats like Frank, Dean and Sammy, and Brittney, Justing, and Christina, is that Frank, Dean and Sammy had TALENT, and none of the technological advancements to help them sound better that we have now adays.

    [start rant]
BTW,I find that many cover bands sound as good as the original artists. They put in a lot of time and effort (I should know I was the singer of one) and have more talent than most of the "POP" stars today, they just do it because of a love of performing. IT doesn't make them any less of an artist.

Actually, there are laws governing the disposal of the use chemicals. All of them have the silver removed from them and are then eligible for disposal. The OSHA MSDS for all the chemicals used is a few hundred pages long for a relatively simple 8 different mixes(albiet that all together there are probable 20-30 actual different chemicals that are used). This is for color film, not b/w by the way. Lastly, all chemicals must be highly diluted before even going into the sewage system(I don't remember the ratio but it was on the high side) otherwise any commercial photoshop would be shut down by the EPA (there are hoops to jump through with them when starting a photoshop).

Add on that when I was last in the photo processing industry (a fwe years ago) they were already working on making all the chemicals more envronment friendly.

I happen to use my pro equipment(35mm film) and a digital camera nowadays.

As a matter of fact, I think the moking gun against SCO has been sitting right under our noses. In searching for information about Novell's sale of UNIX(or licensing) to Caldera/SCO, I came across an interesting article from last march at

    http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2002/02/ 28 /caldera.html

In short las year Caldera(SCO) released some of the older UNIX Codes (they say including V7 and 32V) under an open source license. This means that if any of the code that SCO is talking about is revealed to be in these versions, they don't have a leg to stand on.

(Disclaimer, I am not a lawyer)

Better yet, why not have the people who see the offending code start the rewrite process and let tha area be highlighted an marked in another way so as not to break any NDS agreement. Wouldn't that be a nice way to make sure SCO gets leveled even harder than they already are getting.

One of the problems with the 1/4ton Jeep is trying to navigate it in High Winds or across a creek that has flooded with a high current. a two ton vehicle does not have as many problems in these circumstances.

"there's no reason the truck needs more than 200 hp"

Besides having to move more weight (not just chasis, but also configuration variables), Altitude and ground conditions can necessitate more horsepower. I know plenty of Jeep owners who have put 350s under the hood because of the type of off roading they do (Mud, sand, high altitude, combination of all the above plus more). The higher the horse, the more torque (in most cases) therefore the more power than can go into the drivetrains and axles to get unstuck or plow through adverse conditions.

Cost really can't be compared properly unless you inflate the 1940's dollar value to presnt day.

If they used the same antimine. armoring on a Jeep it could probably handle driving over a land mine(FYI you can get replacement body parts for the Jeep that are kevlar through a number of catalogs).

The biggest problem with the Humvees that I have is the width. At 8 ft wide, it makes it harder to get through smaller area (i.e. Forests, tight canyons etc...).

One of the main reasons they wanted to get away from Jeeps was back in the 70's they were more prone to rollover when they tried to go to a coiled spring suspension.

As far as ground clearance goes, you cna easily get more ground clearance on a Jeep with a lift kit and larger tires (more than enough for off road conditions).

One area that I feel the Humvee does have an advantage over the old military Jeeps is in cargo space. This is due to the Humvee being larger in size. Just remember that the length of it can create departure angle problems in the right circumstances (i.e. sharp peaks and valleys). I have personally seen this problem when off roading and watching Cherokees, pickups, and longer SUVs get caught in said situations.

Also, the independant suspension that the Humvee uses is fantastic.

Run Flat tires are available for any vehicle now adays.

Now don't get me wrong I think that the Humvee is a great vehicle, but there are advantages to both.
