    You *have* to break backwards compatibility every couple of years. Otherwise your software becomes bogged down and very inflexible.

    But they can't afford to break backward compatibility in a big way, this would prevent them to force upgrades onto their customers. Imagine auto-update disabling ALL your applications?

    Now they can keep their revenue going by forcing their customers on a smooth, not so steep but continuous upgrade cycle.

    Actually, scratch that. Linux kernel devs *do* look like assholes.

    As opposed to Vista kernel devs? Or OSX kernel devs? At least the Linux kernel devs are 'visible'. And I appreciate their efforts - at making a wonderful piece of software, not at appearing like assholes.

    Actually, it doesn't. 640K begins at 655360, which is greater than 640516. If you meant metric K, then yeah, but that wasn't in use back when that was supposedly said.

    Once that was done I promptly installed Kubuntu, but I left the restore partition and can choose it as a boot option from the loader.

    I just tar'ed the restore partition to an USB disk and wiped the drive clean with a fresh install, all from the Kubuntu install CD in one glorious session.

    Sure about that? The two nations that have put people on the moon have done it through government initiative. Most (not all) big corporations have a very limited long term vision, they look to the next quarter and how their stock prices will do.

    The last 40 years not much has happened in the private sector. I'm not talking about satelites.
