I've never understood why Americans seem to admire people who fight in wars so much; could you enlighten me as to why? Does killing make you more intelligent, insightful, learned? Maybe I could understand it of Americans of the revolutionary days, but today, where most people live happy family lives in their suburban homes and recoil in terror at the idea of their kids falling over and scraping their knee? What gives?
where would Linux be today if Linus had the opposite stance? I think it would be much more like Windows, with GUI components in the kernel for cheap graphic performance at the cost of a piss poor design that can and likely will lead to security holes and instability.
So Linus would be a multi-billionaire, and Linux would be running on 95% of the world's PCs. At least the dominant OS would be OSS, so no 'major company to rule them all'!
It's rather amusing that the existance of large numbers of Puritans is evidence that many of them have been dishonouring rule #1 of Puritanism; sex is baaad, mkay?
Reminds me of Fight Club. "I see a lot of new faces in this church tonight. SHUT UP! A lot of you guys have been breaking rule #1."
Let's talk about what's going on in the modern world. And in the modern world it's indisputable that Muslim extremism is claiming more lives/doing more damage then Christian extremism.
I think Bush's crusade on terror has claimed a few dozen-thousand lives...
They developed a method of talking to each other using 'binary' which sounded a little bit like a 10 baud modem, and we're to believe this is more efficient? They 'evolved' to require that they all work in twos, or they were virtually helpless; this is superior to the ability to work either in a team or alone? They wired themselves into a global computer - this makes some kind of sense? Their global computer's ENTIRE memory could somehow be downloaded into ONE starship (Enterprise)'s memory bank? In a few hours? And somehow, throughout this gargantuan operation, and despite the obvious fact that their planet was about to get creamed by a nearby star exploding, they still managed to trick Starfleet into thinking that their exclusive access to the Enterprise's computer was for the purposes of a small upgrade?
Seriously, though, I have a feeling that IPv4 will be saved by an ingenious tech solution far in advance of the world running out of addresses.
Yeah, there are loads of great solutions that you can just invent really easily.
For example, we could put the whole world on 1 IPv4 IP. Then we simply use a secondary metric for determining which host we want to send data to; this could be a 128 bit number, meaning there will easily be enough secondary numbers for all hosts in the world for a long time to come.
Screw whether anyone has a monopoly in the search market; Google frankly deserve that monopoly (not exactly at Windows levels, though; only 75%) because they're THE BEST SEARCH ENGINE.
Now, if Google bought out Yahoo instead, that would be likely to lead a a lot of positive things: - Some degree of maintenance of the Yahoo brand (MS would obliterate it) - Promotion of backend opensource architecture (MS would enforce MS products) - Less likelihood of services being charged for (MS would ruthlessly monetize all Yahoo services as much as possible)
Frankly, I just hate Microsoft's whole money-making diversity-killing business ethos, and you have to realise that a MS buyout of Yahoo would be a pretty terrible thing.:-(
Looks like it might be a good idea for Google to gazump Microsoft and buy Yahoo out themselves, then. They could get access to the vast array of services Yahoo offers, and switch Yahoo's backend architecture to opensource stuff, stimulating more development of opensource technologies. I think it would be a whole lot better for everyone than MS buying it...
I'm just trying to imagine someone raising this in a debate with the candidate.
"Hillary, how can you continue to support the death penalty? Also, are you aware that... [intake of breath] your website's host is running Microsoft IIS as a web server?"
Co-incidence is what people call it when they're confronted by something systematic that they aren't able to understand. It doesn't exist.
I think you're thinking of "magic".
Do you know the meaning of co-incidence? It means some things happening simultaneously. It's quite possible to fully understand an event and say that it was a co-incidence.
If something were to happen that would greatly harm Microsoft to the point that they would be going out of business (like this attempted hostile takeover of Yahoo)
On what evidence do you base the assertion that Microsoft's takeover of Yahoo will put MS out of business (don't get me wrong, I want it to happen, but it's wishful thinking)?
US states have roughly a population near Finland's. This's the reason why the idea was for the states to maintain most of the power, and the Federal government to have very little.
In case anyone's wondering, I'm pretty sure the parent poster's joking. I've never heard of a Ministry of Privacy. It was, however, published by the IPS.
Before Google came along, we were basically down to ONE player in the IT world for many years. Still, it's very depressing to have to put up with the result of US unabridled capitalism like this. I hate seeing all diversity eliminated because of MS's bank account.
Well, Obama is talking a lot about how he wants to promote 'a change' in Washington and support diversity, and stuff (pro net-neutrality). If he got in, quashing this hostile takeover would be a great way to put his money where his mouth is. I have my serious doubts, though.:-(
You must be new to Slashdot. You know how most site developers have a local copy of the site that they test on and then sync to the main site when they're finished? With Slashdot, that's the main site.
the full inference of the comment of the man above is that there is the unworthy, a magical cut off line (which no one can determine, but that's besides the point), and then a special higher class of worthy people
This is true. Democracy is overrated. Do you really think a nation is best steered by hoardes/mobs of couch potatoes? It is not.

When you stop doing that, then we can talk.
No, we can't. Even if every Muslim behaved impeccably, the loss of our freedoms is never on the bargaining table.

I don't usually make posts like this, but the term "You-niverse" made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
You should probably go see a doctor about that.
That episode was dumb in so many ways.

Mods: what is funny about the parent comment?

Bush was captain of the ship.
Nope, I want em out of business. I'm just bored of their name, their logo, etc. I wanna see some fresh faces. Besides, they bug me.

Thanks for cheering me up there. I'd just come home and had a hard day's work, and your post was just what I needed!

You forget that AL Jazeera is still on air. :-) They're reporting the comment as we speak.
Oh my god! Only 5 hundred and twelve MILLION bytes of RAM?! How are you supposed to make an OS run on that?
Even a modern OS with nice graphics should not need that kind of heavy-duty hardware.
