  1. Re:simplicity and capacity on Why Have PDAs Failed In The iPod Era? · · Score: 1

I pulled up the stats in AlbumPlayer (which is great if you have nothing but full albums, not this single song crap you end up with when downloading pirated copies), and I have 1963 albums = 27783 songs = 1956hours 30minutes of music. Granted, some of these are CD singles and CD5s, and some songs (like the Ramones) are only 1:30 long, but still the total HD space on my network server is 159GB.

  2. Re:simplicity and capacity on Why Have PDAs Failed In The iPod Era? · · Score: 1

Well - I have about 2200 CDs in my collection, from my days working in the music industry (DJ, concert promoter, chain record store manager). That is about 165 GB of music. Take long to rip? Sure it did. I have been ripping my collection off and on since the late 1990s at 192kb. I am sure alot of the original CDDB entries were mine (gracenote sure bent me over on that one) They are now all sitting in neat rows, in matching cartons, in storage along with a buch of other crap I can't seem to get rid of. Some day, when we have a different-and much better-standard, I can pull them all out and do it again.

Which makes me ask, in 20 years, when MP3s are replaced by PMF files, or whatever, that are 1/10 the size and lossless, will iTunes let me get the new one for free, or will I be relegated to buying the same album again, like I had to do when tape went to CD? (and you thought there was no way they could squeeze more money out of the back catalog).

If I were a VC I would bill you for wasting my time. There are plenty of VCs out there dying to invest their money as it has a shelf life that is coming due, but no one is stepping up with a good idea. And yours is not a good idea. A good idea had a $5-20 Billion market. A good idea can capture at least 5% of that market. A good idea fills a void in the market. A good idea has high switching costs for the end user, is hard to duplicate, is expensive to get into, has large margins, has the ability to block competitors through things like patents, leverages an already installed base, and makes you wet your pants it is so good. If you don't believe in your idea to invest your own money, money you may not have, put together a team, do the research, etc. - then why would a VC invest?

I, for one, can't believe this got posted. Oh, wait, yes I can. Perhaps my next submission will be an Ask Slashdot: "How much will you pay for this turd."

Perhaps this is a part of a vast realization that open source software is not a basis for a business except for the very top end (large servers) and the very bottom end (embedded systems). Linux on the desktop, which I run with RH and OpenOffice, is a nightmare for the average user. I have over 10 years programming experience, so do fine, but wouldn't expect my mother to run Linux. In fact, I would rather she was on OSX or BeOS than Win98 because I am the one who gets her support calls. The technology has to become transparent to the user, like a car or a dishwasher, before it will become a success. No one is working out there to make this happen and no one is paying companies for doing work in the linux desktop arena. That, my friends, is economic reality. A nice linux gaming console with a decent API, SDK, and developer toolkit would make this happen. There is no organization to the community to push a cohesive vision for the home market and all the other guys have got their s*** together. XBox, PS2, even Apple, all have a full strategy and are running full out to be the winner in an integrated home market. This includes video games.

This is the best thing that could happen to linux right now. To break the MS Monopoly, linux has to mainstream. OSX won't do it, BeOS is dead, BSD is further behind on the desktop than linux is. Are you waiting for solaris to suddenly take off? Lindows is the first good idea I have heard in quite a while, except this. This might just do the impossible, not to mention setting a standard for a lot of the industry that will bring more jobs to those of you who do linux for a living. It may also provide a standard desktop config, so we can get on to building cross-compatible apps.

We use Kids Passport to get permission from your parent so you can start using Hotmail again right away! To get started, answer the question below.

Is your parent with you right now? Y N"

Though it is nice that they are following COPPA, I am 32 yrs old. Answering no to the question brings me to a screen where I enter my parents email address and they send off a note to get permission. Saying yes gets me a screen where I verify that I am the parent of myself, etc.

I don't want to falsify this information, for fear of breaking their agreement, nor do I want to get my mother involved (I am not sure if she would understand that she needs to OK me to access email, and I don't want to get her involved with Microsoft).

I cannot figure out how they know my age (erroneously), except I ruitinely skip that whenever asked.

So, how do I get my spam from my hotmail box without breaking Federal law or Microsoft's aagreement, and at the same time leave my parents out of this.
