  1. No Muscle Wasted! on Stretching Before Exercising Weakens Muscles · · Score: 1
You'd better believe that when I'm leg pressing 3500lbs (a light day) or bench pressing 850lb dumbells, that I forgo the static stretching.

Call me crazy, but with all the 'roids I've pumped into this muscle machine of love, I want to be sure to get my value for dollar, if you know what I mean.

If my fibula happens to rip through the top of my knee caps, or expel my intestines on the contraction, tough cookies. No pain, no gain.

  2. Re:Importance of warm-up on Stretching Before Exercising Weakens Muscles · · Score: 1
I hardly expected to see this on Slashdot. The timing couldn't be more appropriate.

I have to agree with the parent, here. I pulled at least two muscles (upper back and neck) at the gym this morning and I'm a quite a sad site to behold today.

You see, I normally workout in the evenings. Other than a light jog on the treadmill to warm up my muscles and get the heart rate going, I don't typically stretch before my weight training. Apparently, I need to at 6am.

If stretching would have prevented this (no guarantee), I'd take a slight hit in my performance at the gym over how I feel right now.

Of course, you have to pick your carrier carefully or you will still raise suspicion.

For example, it's obvious that any television show hosted by Bob Saget is nothing more than a carrier for stenographic communication between earth and our intergalactic overlords.

Don't try to convince me that Full House and America's Funniest Home Videos survive on merit of ratings alone.

Thank GOD I had a working Ubuntu partition that could actually communicate to the ethernet card so I could actually search for the proprietary Windows drivers on the net.

Have you ever actually tried to get a Windows installation to work without the benefit of the proprietary driver discs? Starting from the same clean slate (an OS ISO), I'd wager you'll have better luck with Ubuntu these days.

All it takes is a bit of marketing (for good, not evil for a change) to come up with some brand name and logo to distinguish albums that have been mastered with care from the rest of the compressed junk out there.

Sort of like the SUPERBIT DVD releases, which focus on the quality of the main title as opposed to all sorts of extras.

If you stick a notice on the album/download explaining why the volume seems lower compared to others, the fans will appreciate it more.

Do you really believe the studios are behind BlueRay because they expect the prices to eventually drop to the same point as DVD?

Mark my words, BlueRay movies will never sell for the same price as DVDs. We've seen this upgrade path repeatedlywith the introduction of cassettes tapes, CDs and DVDs. Each technology upgrade comes with a higher price/profit margin for the content providers. I expect BlueRay will be the same.

I predict the majority of consumers won't be interested in paying a premium for the incremental upgrades HDTV and BlueRay provides over their predecessors.

  17. Re:ehh.. on Blu-ray Gone In Five Years, Samsung Claims · · Score: 4, Insightful
What killed VHS off was the obscure minority of consumers such as yourself still purchasing or renting VHS titles.

For the vast majority of consumers, DVDs had so many more compelling reasons for people to upgrade than BluRay ever will.

BluRay will remain a niche offering, as there are relatively few compelling reasons for the majority of consumers to upgrade from DVDs.

The studios will not stop releasing DVDs as long as the majority of the market is purchasing them.

A combination of aerobic and resistance training is best, as it provides the immediate benefits of burning calories (aerobic) along with the benefits of additional muscle mass and strength. I found resistance training to counter the neck, back and forearm injuries common to my profession as a desk jockey.

I'd still recommend at least a couple sessions with a personal trainer at a gym. You don't need to sign your life away to learn some effective exercises (i.e. results in less time) that will prevent you from wasting countless hours. A trainer could put together a challenging routine that you could do at home with little-to-no investment in equipment. You'd be amazed at what you can do with a BOSU, exercise ball, jump-rope, bungee and some light-weight dumbells (sounds like a McGiver promo, I know).

  24. miniDV is preferred format on Best Way To Store Digital Video For 20 Years? · · Score: 1
DVD encoding is not an ideal archive format, as it does not preserve frame-level content (limiting editing capabilities). You'll find that even pro/semi-pro archival of 8mm is done using miniDV tape as the preferred format, as it preserves frame-level content.

miniDV tape is still your most economical for retaining raw, unedited content. It may be more practical to archive the edited content on harddrives, but stick to the miniDV format if you wish to preserve the original quality.

As a digital medium, you can bounce it as many times as you want (including back to tape) to trade off stability and volume archival needs.

I'll admit, however, that I'm not up to speed on the latest HD formats, if that applies to your needs.

  25. Time to think outside the box... on RIAA's Throwing In the Towel Covered a Sucker Punch · · Score: 3, Interesting
The RIAA is a monopolistic mafia that depends on the popularity of their artists to enforce their ways. Popularity which they artificially create via their PR machine and monopoly.

I say we play into their game... to their detriment.

Find the lamest, most retarded RIAA artist out there (I'm thinking orders of magnitude beyond Milli Vanilli here) and everyone (and I mean everyone) buy ONLY that artist's material. Buy every CD, online album, single, ringtone, whatever. I wanna see that artist as the sole occupant of every music chart and radio playlist. The more obvious to everyone of the sham that is taking place, the better.

Once the RIAA is dependent on this single jackass of an artist for all of their revenue (effectively killing off the rest of their artists or driving them outside the RIAA), stop buying. Let the competition, based on free market labels and artists with true talent, drive the final stake through their sorry butts. It will go down as one of the most hilarious (and satisfying) scandals ever.
