  1. A case mod to get the ladies! on Aquarium Modcase · · Score: -1, Offtopic

I think I'm going to put a Sybian on top of my vanilla Antec case. Perhaps have a spill pan underneath that feeds into my liquid cooling system.

  2. Paper Shredders on Identity Theft Countermeasures? · · Score: 4, Funny
I've been thinking about investing in a good one. One interesting piece of trivia I found is that Oliver North used an Intimus 007 to shred the Iran-Contra stuff back in 1987. The current incarnation of this model appears to be the Intimus 0077 SX. This thing cuts pieces down to 1/32" x 1/2". A quick search on Froogle says it goes for around $4500!!

They make some much cheaper models ($200-300), but the Olie model would be pretty cool to have.

  3. Thanks Carly! on New High-End HP Calculator? · · Score: 2
I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact that Carly Fiorina, HP CEO and stupid bitch, is the reason HP's current calculator lineup is so pathetic.

The vintage, pre-Carly HP calculators currently fetch $$$ on eBay. The few new ones, such as the 49G and this 'high-end' one, look like crappy TI knockoffs.

I recently upgraded my box with 'quiet' components and it wasn't too difficult or expensive. I took off the stock AMD Athlon heatsink/fan combo and installed a ThermalRight SLK-800 ($40) heatsink and an Pabst 8412N ($17) 80 mm fan. I also took off the rear 80 mm fan on my case and replaced it with a Pabst (another $17). For the power supply, I put in a Nexus NX-3000 ($75).

For around $150 total, the improvement was pretty dramatic. The only sound I hear from my box now is the hard drive, and if that ever starts to become an annoyance, there are options.

No love for OpenBSD? It's arguably the best OS for security and firewalls.

So exactly how do we all keep screwing up by saying "Gig" instead of "Jig" when we probably heard it right most of our lives?

This is an interesting piece of computer related pronunication trivia. The word 'gigabyte' (think 'gigantic') is apparently correctly pronounced with the 'j' sound. I've never, ever heard anybody actually say 'jiggabyte' though..

  9. Same day release dates on Harry Potter in German, not Czech · · Score: 4, Insightful
I hope this doesn't come off as too 'Jon Katzy,' but the internet has made irrelevant this common practice of premiering something in one country and delaying it's release (often for marketing purposes) in other countries. For example, 28 Days Later was released in the UK on Nov 1, 2002, but they waited until June 27, 2003 before the US release. The DVD-R of this title has literally been floating around the internet for months. Who wants to wait?

The Harry Potter publishers were naive to think this wouldn't happen.

  10. Re:I love you Plextor. on CD Burners with Built in Compression · · Score: 4, Informative

I love Plextor too, but their DVD burners are kind of disappointing when compared to the Plex CD burners. They use the so-so NEC drives with a slightly modified firmware, and currently only support DVD+R/RW. I think Sony is much more innovative in the DVD burner arena, especially with their new external 4x DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, combo firewire/USB 2.0 drive.

I know this is slashdot, but I have been very impressed with Win2k. It's fast, stable, and reliable. I've flirted with XP a couple times, but I always end up reinstalling 2k.
