  2. Neato Keen on Martin Michlmayr Wins DPL · · Score: 1, Offtopic

I'm glad to see free software projects being managed so well, with organized heirachies and the like.

I personally prefer Gentoo over Debian, but Debian is still a damn solid distro and I hope they continue to do well.

We could be talking about a revolution in isolationism here! I can't wait!

  5. Re:Ranma 1/2 on Trigun Coming to Cartoon Network · · Score: 5, Insightful

What I don't understand is how these shows are targetted at adults, yet still have many of the restrictions that children's shows have. I mean, look at a prime time show on FOX. Probably a lot more violent and with more sexually suggestive dialogue/scenes than an anime, yet anime aired in North America still gets heavily edited - even for trivial things like someone drinking water instead of beer.

  6. Anime on Trigun Coming to Cartoon Network · · Score: 4, Interesting

I used to watch anime all the bloody time, read fan translated mangas, etc. etc., but I just eventually lost intrest. Perhaps seeing all these great anime shows on local television will rekindle my intrest. Hopefully the voices won't be horrible - that's one of the things that turned me off back in the day.

  7. fork() power on The XFree86 Fork() Saga Continues · · Score: 3, Insightful

If this leaves the XFree86 project as a more flexable, open, and more modular project, then so be it. I'm all for anything that can improve performance for *NIX GUIs.

From everything I see, it's too late in the game to make a new graphical interface - unless it has a compatability layer to work with X apps. But even then, we'd need to develop it FAST to make sure *NIX doesn't fall behind in the OS game.

  8. Good news to me... on A Positive Outlook on the Software Industry · · Score: 4, Interesting

After spending a couple years in CS training I was sort of beginning to get worried about the availability of jobs, what with all the horrible news about the IT industry. I still might have to take a callcenter job for awhile first, but hey, it's just a rite of passage.

  9. Hmm on Turn Your Monitor Into an HDTV · · Score: 4, Insightful

I would imagine that simply buying a HDTV would, in the end, be cheaper. HDTVs are just really big monitors IIRC. That's not to say this isn't cool, I just imagine it would be more economical to buy an HDTV and use it as your monitor :D

  10. Re:Good Luck on LGP Announces Game Development Team · · Score: 5, Informative

There are some good game engines out there that are cheap.

For instance, Torque, the engine Tribes 2 is based on, is available for $100 dollars. And in addition to that, you can test it out a bit beforehand. It works with Windows, Mac, and Linux. Not every game engine costs several hundred thousand dollars.

And last time I checked, Tribes 2 didn't look too amateurish or cheaply made.

  11. Ballistics on LGP Announces Game Development Team · · Score: 1

Perhaps all these fancy titles with words like "Enterprise" in them will make large corporations see Linux as a solution for their projects. That's the main thing stopping linux... recognition.

  13. Hmm... on MA Dept. of Revenue consider Linux · · Score: 1

The problem is, of course, retraining. Windows-esque KDE environments can go a long way, but there are all those little niggling things that can throw a user off. THat's not to say I'm not behind them switching to Linux, I thinkn it's an excellent idea if it does what they want it to do, I'm just saying they have to consider all those small things you might think of at first.

  14. Don't worry on Matrix Special Edition Cancelled · · Score: 3, Funny

  15. QA on Working as a Game Tester · · Score: 1

QA/Game Testing must be the worst job... any game can be ruined for you by having to playtest it. Sure it's fun the first couple times through, but how fun is it on your 43rd?

I mean, there's so much stupid things to do. You have to test and see if you can play through the game using a knife while running backwards and jumping nonstop because SOME nut out there will try it. And you never know, that nut might work for a review website/magazine.

  16. Black Rhino? on BlackRhino Linux Now Available for PlayStation 2 · · Score: 1

  17. Hmm... on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 2, Insightful

This would be great and wonderful if people didn't already know about KaZaA/WinMX/Gnutella/etc. As much as you say "Hey, we've changed! Songs are cheap now and you can get them from home!" there will always be those people who say "That's great... but I can still get the same songs for free.". Frustrating to say the least.
