  1. Re:Please explain on Hubble vs. Webb - How Far Back Will They See? · · Score: 1

Well, I'm trying to understand how they could see the light "when our universe was just 200 or 300 million years old", if light moves a lot faster than us. Wouldn't the light be long past us? Maybe I'm missing something here.

  2. Please explain on Hubble vs. Webb - How Far Back Will They See? · · Score: 1

I understand that the light took 13.x billion years to reach us, but how can we actually see something that happened that long ago if the "universe" was fairly new? I mean, did we travel faster than the speed of light to reach the spot in the universe that we currently reside? If not, I would think the light would have passed us by long ago. Perhaps we could see objects that traveled away from us, but it still seems like the light from those wouldn't be near the beginning of the universe. I'm just a little puzzled on this. Can anyone explain?

Totally, it's just a bad idea. I guess this guy didn't read the previous slashdot article saying that a guy went to jail for someone hijacking his computer. Basically it ruined his life. If the guy is telling the truth, how many people believe him? I know I have my doubts.

Either way by making yourself insecure like this you are just adding to the many problems of the Internet. Plus you'll have spyware installed on your machine just by surfing to the wrong website, popups like there's no tomorrow. What happens when someone finally writes a malicious virus that destroys your data? I wouldn't feel sorry for you.

Seems to me that Microsoft would benefit from this more than Square/Enix. Especially if they made a game exclusive to the X-Box 2. It would be a great foot in the door to those Japanese gamers. But at the same time it would be a risk for Square/Enix compared to releasing it on a console made in Japan. If I were Microsoft I would pay Square to make a Final Fantasy exclusive (at least on launch) for the X-Box. Any way it goes, I'll be interested.

Agreed. How are you going to watch movies on this thing anyway? It's not like a DVD will fit in it. Are they going to release movies in this disc format? It seems a little silly. Buy a movie and all you can watch it on is a portable gaming device. You couldn't even watch two average length movies on one full battery charge since they claim that it can only run for 2 1/2 hours during video playback.

I loved the original System Shock. When I heard System Shock 2 had come out I looked everywhere local for it. I couldn't find any store carrying it. About 2 months later I happened to see one copy at a local store for $16. I couldn't believe it was so cheap already. I figured the game must have sucked. I reluctantly bought it just because I like the first one so much. To my surprise the game was pretty darn good. I enjoyed it more than most games I paid $50 for. Left me wondering why it was marketed so poorly.

1 GB is a lot of information, and it has to cost a decent chunk of money to allocate that much storage for every user

Who says that they have to allocate 1 GB for every user anyway.

ISPs don't allocate 1 line for every user, and often advertise *no busy signals* and *unlimited usage*. They keep the modem to user ratio around 10:1, 7:1, etc. and bet that everyone won't try to use it at the same time.

Same goes with email. I work at an ISP that has 10MB limits on mailbox size. We don't have enough space for everyone to have 10MB in their box, but always have spare space.

Telephone companies don't have the capacity for everyone to make a phone call at once. Big problem when the Internet got big in our town. Dial a number, get a fast busy signal. Using redial it took nearly 100 tries to get through when it was at the worst.

Often ISPs don't have enough bandwidth for everyone to use their broadband at once.

The list goes on and on. It's really a numbers game.

When you are saying M/s do you mean Megabit or Megabyte? 15MBps (megabyte per second) is pretty close to 100Mbps (Megabit per second.) Perhaps you are just getting the opposite (bit instead of byte) of what you are expecting in Linux?

Maybe this is not the case, but I thought I would throw that out there just in case. Also, 100Mbps network cards don't always go 100Mbps. I've seen some that go closer to 30-40Mbps.

I'm also a Nintendo fan. Some reasons that they might be so popular is...

    - They have been around longer than the Playstation and used to be the king.

    - They have established game brands like Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, etc. Zelda is the most popular Gamecube title if I'm not mistaken. It is pretty much an action RPG if you ask me.

    - They are based in Japan.

    - Japanese homes are very small and so is the Gamecube.

    - It is kid friendly (perhaps?)

    - I still believe that they have more RPGs than X-Box. (Skies of Arcadia Legends, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Zelda, etc.) And you can play a lot of RPGs if you use the gameboy player. That is how I play them myself.

    - I have noticed that most of the Nintendo made games have gotten near perfect scores.

X-Box has advantages as well, but personally I'll buy any console that has Metroid or good RPGs attached =)

We have tried to help them out by putting some good information in our newsletters about spyware and how to remove it (spybot/adaware) but it just doesn't seem to matter. People just don't know how to update windows/scan for spyware/viruses. It is pathetic. Windows really needs to be more demanding on the user to run security updates. And people really need to be careful when downloading programs. But, sadly this is very unlikely.

If I'm not mistaken aren't RPG games huge in Japan? The X-Box is pretty lacking on this genre at the moment. That was the same reason I held off on buying an X-Box (except I had to get Ninja Gaiden.) I don't think they researched the Japanese market as well as they should have (controllers, game genre's, etc.) Plus they are taking on the two most popular console makers still around that are both based in Japan. Get Sqare/Enix to develop an RPG (good luck) on your console and you got it made in Japan. Maybe Fable will help turn things around a little. I know I'm looking forward to that one.

Amazon has that new "Search Inside the Book" that might end up being useful, but honestly most of the information I need is when something doesn't work. Google it real quick and the answer is usually there. I don't want to read a whole book on the subject for the most part. Maybe it has something to do with that "short attention span and brain damage" randomly shuffling my brain.
