Lucas said that he released the trilogy on DVD earlier than he liked because of piracy. I call bullshit. He released it early because of HD. He wanted to make sure he made as many sales as possible from the DVD format before HD became widespread.
"But I don't want to milk the cow anymore mommy." "Do it anyway, it'll help you later in life."
I know my digital camera take time to charge the flash before you can use it, making it take much longer between shots. Plus the battery drains quick when using it a lot. Lame, people will just mod it out one way or another.
I've been in the same boat. I've had some ideas on software I wanted to write, but have worried about patents. Software should only be protected via copyright in my opinion. Software patents should be banished. They are helping the monopolies more than the little guys.
This has led me to thinking of developing games. I've never once seen a video game patent case. Are games immune from patents? They are software, and really it seems like pretty much the same thing to me. For example, Tetris was really unique for its time, but now there are hundreds of clones. What really is different between an inventive form of gameplay vs. some of the foolish software patents that are out there now? Really, I want to know why this is so different! Please any comments welcome.:)
This could be a bad idea. Game developers may not support the hard drive if everyone doesn't have one. If the price difference to get the hard drive is too large there may be few that purchase it. The article doesn't say, but I wonder if you can buy the basic X-Box and put in a hard drive later.
Wow, check out PortForward.com! If you need help forwarding ports for this game, or bittorrent to download it:), this is the place. Found the link on Blizzard's website. Pretty useful stuff!
You are right, I misread his point on the native resolutions. Although, I think my LCD looks pretty darn good at the non-native resolution. I use it for emulation pretty often. Probably not quite as good as a quality CRT, but nice enough that it doesn't bother me at all. Definately not horrible, although some indeed are.
The reason I mentioned ghosting is that was what the whole 'Ask Slashdot' question was about, so I thought I would somewhat try to stay on topic.:)
It is all personal preference, and it is great that we have the choice between both technologies. I say, if possible, try both out before making your decision.
I have a Dell UltraSharp 2000FP LCD and am able to run it at 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, even 320x200 works. Haven't had trouble with any resolutions that I've tried and I love to run some of those old emulators (dos as well.) I don't notice any ghosting in games on it.
The biggest reason I did switch was for my eyes. I didn't like radiation shooting at my eyes and head most of the day.
Also the space saving, and ease of portability compared to what I had before. A few things that have been handy with this LCD is that it has 4 different inputs, DVI, VGA, S-Video, and composite, that can be switched right from a button on the front of the LCD. It also has picture-in-picture, which is also a nice feature that I rarely use.
It was very expensive when I bought it, about $1000. They have a newer, better model out now that is cheaper by a few hundred, but the price is very hard to swallow if your CRT is working for you.
Very interesting point. There are many things that animals have evolved better than we have. All of our senses have been done better by one animal or another. Most animals have more offensive and defensive arsenals than we do. Our evolved brain, vocal cords, and hands are wonderous tools that [over]compensate for what lack in other areas. There is no such thing as the perfect animal, each have evolved with their own set of skills to give them an advantage. If not, they are lunch.
When their belief, custom and behaviors include mistreating and killing people, or protecting those who do, I tend to agree. The world obviously needs a moral compass. It has nothing to do with religion, it's just the right thing to do. Usually those that invade a country for religious reasons aren't there to bring "light to this evil world!"
So what is the right war? When is the right time? Who is the right president? How long do we wait before fighting back against terrorists? If we don't bring them to justice do you really think they will stop trying to attack us? The terrorists don't want to kill one or two or 100,000, they would like to kill us all. Just like a bully, if you don't stand up to them, they will never back down. Should we just kick back and wait for the "right president" and the "right time" while the terrorists are growing in number and collecting new weapons to kill us in the mean time? Is it justified for Bush to sit back and do nothing? Sick is how Sadam treated his own people. Many more have been executed under his rule than we have killed in the war. War sucks, but can be a necessary evil. I, for one, do feel safer and am glad that Bush took action and brought many of these terrorists to justice letting the world know that we won't stand for it.
The heart pumps faster when you exercise, etc to distribute the required amount of oxygen to the needy body. I wonder if this device has a way to move the blood faster as well. If it can, how does the body tell it to push faster?
I would just be happy with a non-buggy non-MMO Ulitma X RPG. Is that so much to ask for? EA buys Origin and then stops making what used to be one of the greatest selling RPGs. Not everyone wants to play MMO games. And certainly who wants to pay for more than one or two at a time.
Drat, screwed up the post. Anyway, ignore that last sentence and change it to. I need to be able to look at all available data when a spammer hoses our mail servers. It is valuable to look at some of the messages in the queue to find out what is in the message that is being sent by hundreds of virus infected PCs.
I can see where this could easily be abused, but I work for an ISP and am very glad for this. I work on spam filtering all the time, and without looking at the emails it would be a lot more difficult. Plus customers ask all the time to get into their mailbox and delete things, etc. I can see where this could easily be abused by an ISP though.
"Have any Slashdot readers ever actually used the backwards compatibility on their PlayStation 2?"
Damn straight. I have 82 PS1 games and never have owned the original playstation, just the PS2. Along with gameboy backward compatibility. I use the gameboy player more than I ever actually use my gba. To me it's a big deal if the X-box 2 isn't backward compatible. I'll get over it if it's not, but I would much rather it was.

Could this be part of the reason that offshore programming has taken off like it has? Can't build it here, so go elsewhere. It's a real shame.

Ummm. No one watches X-play? Dude, where have you been? Morgan Webb is on that show. Personally, I think that is one of their best shows left.

I usually pronounce it as my-ess-que-ell.
I believe that is how it is intended to be pronounced. I remember a long time ago they actually told you how to pronounce it on their website.
Standard DVDs are 480i/480p.
480p = 720x480.
720p = 1280x720.
What do you think the oo's will look like in Google's logo on when this is issue is released?
gUUgle, I'm feeling lucky

Yeah, but did they freeze the website for later retrieval?
/. strikes again
is it out on DVD?
It is coming out on DVD. I think they are bringing out all of the Babylon 5 movies and then they are bringing out Crusade on DVD.
