My desktop is Debian Sarge. I had a dual boot setup w/ XP Pro but I trashed that partition and haven't looked back.
But for laptops, XP is the only OS that doesn't drop packets for some strange reason and is rock solid on wireless connectivity. I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 and would love to get wireless working if anybody has any tips or has been down this road already. Maybe once I get out of the Marines, I'll buy a Powerbook but right now a Sergeant's pay can't afford that:)
The way I see it, if you're running some type of broadband and non-wireless connection, there's no reason at all not to be running an Open Source OS.
My unit sets up networks in the field (I'm a Marine) and most of the work involves running a fiber backbone and running CAT5 to each and every computer in the fieldHQ (tents). We had looked into running wireless but of course the security was non-existent. Maybe now, we can spend more time training the junior Marines on real networking, not running a CAT5 drops to some officer who "has" to check his email. My platoon will be looking into this tomorrow, I can assure you.
Well, I'm in the military and have been a US Marine for over seven years. Neither I or anybody I have known in the US military want to remove anybody's civil liberties.
Just because some old admiral is spouting off about what he'd like to do doesn't mean the US military wants to take away civil liberties.
The US military is made up of US citizens that grew up next door to you. Normal people. No one I know owns a black helicopter or pilots one.
Anywa, what does "proceduralise" mean?
Anybody care to hazard a guess on whether or not this admiral has checked to see how much this would cost or even if it's remotely feasible? Sometimes officers should consult w/ the enlisted before shooting off their mouths...
Officer "I'd like to monitor and index EVERYTHING on the Internet so we can hunt down terrorists."
Enlisted "Sir, how do you want to go about doing that? Won't it cost a lot?"
Officer "Errr.... Do it immediately! I don't care how! And issue a press release about how I'm protecting the US against terrorism"
I can't afford it right now but one of my partners is in the market for one. OK to have him email you if you're interested? Seems like too good of deal to pass up. Is 10.2 installed already? Is this 15.2 display?

Well, if I was an IT manager of a corporation, I would not be making my decisions based off of ESR's comments. ESR is not OSS. He just strongly believes in it and is passign the scoop onto the rest of us.
I would be making my decisions on the "right tool for the job" mentality. As far as I'm concerned, Microsoft is has been at least as immature as ESR in some of their comments. The GPL is a virus? Did you write in and criticize Microsoft for that?
All things aside, any open source advocate/evangelist who cuts his hair at least once a year and is pro-gun is alright with me:)
Now that was a terrible comeback. I point out a couple of facts and you retort w/ insults about someone who actually did stand up for our rights. I will tell you that you don't read/. since you obviously missed the article about Jesse Helms. Whether a Republican or Democrat, the most important thing is where they stand on the issues most important to you.
The "all you techies" refers to your previous point. However, it's good to see many of us techies are seeing the flaws in your arguements.
A week or so ago, Jesse Helms went up to bat for online rights. I guess he isn't a Republican in your book? But Howard Berman is a Republican. Oh wait, no he's not. Also, who was President when the DMCA was passed?
Anyway, "all you techies", don't judge a person by his or her political party. See what they stand for.
Dude, just try Libranet. Easiest Debian install you don't have to pay for. Download the 2.0 version for free, edit the/etc/apt/sources.list to testing or unstable, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-get dist-upgrade, and you're done.
I have tried installing w/out PCMCIA but after PCMCIA installs the same problem comes back. After using Libranet I want to kick myself every time I use an RPM based distro but so far I can't get my wireless pcmcia working in Libranet. What laptop are you using? Dell Inspiron 8100 ehre
Has any/.ers installed Knoppix on a laptop? Hopefully w/ wireless? Redhat8 and Mandrake9 keep dropping packets using my wireless connection and it's more than a little frustrating not to even be able run apt-get update or up2date. I tried my trusty Libranet 2.7 but it hangs every time on pcmcia while booting and never completes booting.
I tried to read one of Brian Herbert's Dune prequels and I noticed that normally where Frank Herbert would start a chapter w/ an amazing quote, lyric, or poem, Brian simply uses one of his father's quotes, lyrics, or poems. Big shoes to fill, I know but shouldn't you ask yourself if you're continuing on the in the same tradition or simply trying to make money off of your father's reputation?
a more perfect application for Open Office, right? I would guess Openoffice would be less of a resouce hog on refurbished older computer as written of in the article than running Office on top of WINE. Also, it's free.
I can't think of bigger waste of land and resources than a golf cource. Drive through Palm Springs CA and you'll see what I mean. Imagine how much water is wasted just so people can play a GAME. Not a sport. I'm not much for development but houses would be better than empty land set aside for golfers. Anybody who stops the golfing industry is on the side of Good and Light in my book.
I'm an MCSE and I NEVER recommend Microsoft products if I can help it. I was never blind to Linux while I was going through the MCSE learning and testing process, it just seems to me that as a Marine leaving the service soon, every cert I can get will help me since while most of you guys were getting their college degrees I was humping a pack and an M203. I went to a couple of MCSE classes before I figured out they were a waste of time and I noticed most people there had an open mind to Linux and Open Source in general. I've come quite a ways from dumb grunt but I still have a long ways to go in the IT field but I'm enjoying every minute of it. Anyway, try not to crack on all of those MCSEs. Some of them are people trying to better themselves and others have just come out of the geek closet. Of cource if they'e bashing Open Source, get'em:)
I took a class recently conducted by a Major ( in the Corps) who informed me that Linux is used for firewalling at the higher echelons of IT in the Corps.
As for other services, I can point you to quite a few Navy guys running Linux mailservers. The Navy is much less regimented than the Corps and their IT think nothing of going Fry's, building a nice Athlon system, and throwing Linux on it. That would never happen here in the Corps unfortunately. I'm sure if I'm in Kuwait in six months setting up a network and the only way to get said network running was through the LEAF project, I'd get the go-ahead until we could get some expensive, proprietary firewall sent to us.
The poster above is pretty much dead on. Each service does have its own way of going things. Just head on over to Netcraft.com and see what the Army's running for a webserver.
-download and burn Libranet 2.0
-install Libranet 2.0
-modify/etc/apt-sources/list to your liking ( testing, sarge, unstable )
-apt-get upgrade
-apt-get dist upgrade
-rejoice that you're running Debian!
Seriously, it is that easy. I'm running Libranet 2.7 upgraded to Debian Sarge on my desktop and it's a dream. Accelerated nVidia drivers run well especially on UT 2003 and all of my peripherals ( wireless optical Intellimouse, networked printer, etc. ) work great. Not to mention apt-get:) Now if I could just get Return to Castle Wolfenstein running....
I think you'd be fine since P4s run cooler than Athlons. Mine runs at 48C on an overclocked Athlon 1.33@1.53. Even on the highest setting, it's nice and quiet. Unlike other people posting about this, I used Actic Silver II Alumina. 3 bucks at Fry's, there's no reason not to use that paste. Also, the Zalman is well put together and packaged. Comes with its own tool to attach it to the board also. Be careful when attaching ti to the board since those fins can cut you or be broken off. Just read Cmdr Taco's journal for a story about the latter.
So I can't block it at the firewall? Why doesn't Slashdot's editors contact these people for an interview? A serious interview, mind you. Ought to be interesting.
You're not using a demo version, njust the last full version. Merely updating your/etc/apt/sources.list to Libranet's sources and running apt-get dist-upgrade oughta do it. Here's the sources
deb http://libranetlinux.com updates/2.7/
deb http://libranetlinux.com security/2.7/
I think Libranet is much closer to actual Debian while maintaining an installer not my grandmother but my dad could definitely use. Free download, too! Check this out for a review. The reviewer skimps quite a bit on apt-get IMHO, I think he should have shown exactly how easy it is to install w/apt-get vs. rpms. here's the link: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/1,3973, 646011, 00.asp

A true troll would actually post the link to goatse.cx. Wannabe.

"Anyone want to buy a G4?" How much? Specs?
And they laughed at my snackrifices to El Chupa Negre!

Who CAN'T justify a need for a Unix laptop w/ 4GIGS of RAM?!
