I just want to point out, I said one of the only, big difference from only. I count the long term affect of a weapon as well as the short term. The increase in radio activity causes cancer and birth defects for generations. That is inhuman
to your point about land mines ext., we are the only first world country to use land mines, I'm not as sure about joint standoff weapons(aka cluster bombs) however I know most if not all other first world nations have band them because of the civilian casualties they cause
Why are Americans so touchy about their military? Is it he half trillion they spend on it? Do they just like killing?
which humanitarian war will this weapon see the light...
I'm curious as to what you mean by "humanitarian" wars, there is nothing humane about wars. It is true that most countries follow the Geneva Conventions that bans among other things the use of a few of the most gruesome weapons(such as land mine or weapons targeted towards children) the US(who will get these first) has never allowed it self to be limited in such ways. We are currently one of the only countries that uses
1)"depleted" uranium bullets
2)land mines
3)cluster bombs(and their painted bright yellow, a kid friendly color and the same as food drops)
and of cores we are the only country that has announced that we are willing to use nuclear weapons
compared to the uranium bullets we use today these can only be an improvement as they will not cause a long term increase of cancer when used

While it's a good read I would suggest that you keep the advisory in mind, there are some very gruesome scenes in the story
To anser all the people asking if the ibook can stand up to more than 1 fall, the anser is yes
there are currently 3 ibooks in my immediate family, and all have been dropped several times(usually resulting from younger siblings wanting a turn). The highest drop mine has taken was about 2.5 meters and there is no notable damage aside from a few scratches here and there.
while I haven't tried myself I do remember reading that ibooks can survive some time in an oven, being run over by trucks, being hit in the screen w/ a baseball bat, in fact I'm fairly certain they can survive water, altho not when on(apples old 5300's could)...
That they'd rather put up money for shows like Tremors: The Series instead of Farscape.
economically speaking they have a good reason to drop Farscape for Tremors: out of my sweet of 10 1(me) watches Farscape and 9(the others) watch Tremors
If this is a standard ratio then it's no surprise really...
I'm sure everybody here has similar experiences... it just seems that the geek of every family gets automatically assigned tech support duties.
I see this trend allot, thow for me it's both better and worse. Out of 3 children we are all more or less geeks, so they almost never need my help
What is horrible is when my parents have computer problems the situation will usually unfold like this:Youngest brother "just do X", Parent "no, I don't think you know what your doing", middle brother "No, he was right, all you have to do is X", Parent "You probably don't know either", so they they call me at he dorm where I tell them to do exactly what both my brother already advised
for the types of problems parents have(mistyped e-mail ext) my brothers have never been wrong, and it's quite annoying to get a call asking me for tech support they already got from my brothers...
Apple has had text-to-speach and some level of voice recognition cince OS 7.x, which was realeased in May of 1991
For a wile I had my mac read my e-mail to me, but the voices arn't that good and so I stoped that the biggest use for the voices is as a responce when using voice recogintion, a few handy apple scripts and you'd be suprized what you can do
Grafitti required considerably less CPU cycles than Newton's handwriting recognition.
I think here you touch on 1 or the best points of the newt, it's handwriting recognition may be slower, but it's still the best around
after breaking my wrist the Newton is the only PDA that can read my handwriting, a very impressive task, even I can barley decipher it
It seems to me that bringing the Newton back(iNewton anyone?) would be a great idea for apple, it's a great product and it would be nice to see some upgrades
I doubt that there will be anything significant that we will be able to do except predict the end of the world, and you bet that I'll be quitting my job then!:)
If the earth was going to be wiped out it might be a good idea to try an set humanity up somewhere else. If we could start a stable biosphere in orbit we could have set up a colony to last an indefanent amount of time on the moon or other body
While your analisys is verey thuro you forgot to mention 1 of the arguably most important fetures of apples. Style. You cary a wintell laptop you look like a geek, you cary a mac, well lets just say it can work somthing like a cute puppy. For some reson females like cute and macs are just about the only computers that qualify...
Would this be doomed to failure because of the tens of thousands of legacy apps that expect things to be the way they are?
I'm not sure about how to set up a new keyboard, however there is only 1 company that would fully introduce a new keyboard. A few PC manufactures may make special keyboards, but only Apple would ever dump legacy support just to try something new. If we do see a new design that is where it will be from(and just think about the ridicule they'd receive, I bet it would be even worse then when they introduced the CD drive or got rid o the floppy)
Actually I'm talking more about brand/name recognition. When people see the M$ logo they think computer, if they see a device labeled palm they think handheld, and if a device is advertised linux then the average person will think of it as a cheep off brand. I don't know why this is, but often when I mention linux to non nerds they either don't know what it is or think that is a cheap rip-off of windows
on a side note, most palm stuff has the windows logo(not a penguin) in the corner of the box, thereby gaining from M$'s brand name
I believe when when the he to linux as an unpopular OS he means that linux is unpopular with most consumers
If it isn't M$ most people won't look at it(games aside)
From the beginning of PowerPC Macs, the PowerPC was the domain of "AIM": Apple, IBM, Motorola. They all had a formal agreement of some kind regarding the chip's development. I think it kind of fell apart, probably around when Motorola developed Altivec
I could be wrong here, but as I recall the agreement fell apart when apple took the designs and ran, not the best choice for ending a partnership, but at least thieve made some great machines since then.
from the review: When we tried to bring the machine up, it wouldn't come up. Black screen, and nothing else. The caps lock was still working, so the machine was not completely crashed, but it wouldn't awake no matter what. So, we had to hard reset it again and then we got over the painful fsck time to clean up the filesystem
I've had this problem w/ my ibook as well, usually the computer can be reactivated by turning the brightness up and down(don't ask me why, it just works) or in a bad case force quit(command+option +esc)
in these cases however any files being written are usually dead, so it's not an optimal solution...
" I'm from Ohio and I don't even know how the game is played!"
You know the funny thing about that? Most of the fans don't know the rules either. I was never one for watching sports, but I have asked my roommates about football, mostly to understand how they can waste their time watching it(no offense intended to any fans)... what I learned suprised me, namely that they didn't know the rules and simply watched it because that's what they always have done...
Here I would like to present a theory as to why blizzard releases mac version of all their gams and not linux versions. Simply a linux release would = about a 0% greater market. Why you ask? After all linux is becoming a more and more common OS... The majority of mac users either don't know enough or aren't willing to run virtual PC, or get a separate windows computer for gaming. Thus the mac market is about a 5%increase in profit. Linux users on the other hand will simply buy the windows game... thereby removing any motivation for blizzard to spend the money on porting the game to linux. Why make a linux version when they all already bought the windows version...
If you want to see more software on you platform the solution is to boycott the windows versions, or at least pirate them, rather than simply complaining on/.
I first remember seeing the e-paper prediction in a magazine in 92, back then they predicted we'd use nothing but e-paper by 2000(guess the y2k bug shot that down) I'm not saying it won't happen, but it will take await to get significant market saturation, even if it dose become cheep and effective mp3 players are smaller and more durable than CD players, but more people cary diskmen around then mp3 players that however is something I predict will change in the next couple years...
I've seen many similar post on/., claiming that mac users are lowbrow monkeys that don't know the first thing about computers... now, most of the mac users I know are quite skilled with computers. Just because we like a logically organized and easy to use OS(not to mention it actually looks good) dose not mean we can't use a computer. When we complain about "PC users" we generally mean windows minions who think that Dell beats anything else out there. If you want to get technical macs are PC's to
it's actually kinda funny how *nix nerds bash mac addicts for acting superior another serving of hypocrisy anyone
Personally, I just don't like guns, so you could say I'm bias I do however like swords, so I can understand who gun owners would feel if guns were banned.
One of the main reasons I hear for guns is hunting for sport. This I do not consider a good excuse; shutting a deer w/ a high powered rifle from a mile away is not a spot, its a slotted. You wana hunt? Take a bow n' arow and a hunting knife...that takes skill... I wouldn't say guns should be illegal, however, when I was 11 or 12 one of my friends went to a gun show and bought a hand gun. I latter convinced him to barry it. However, there is something wrong in a country where a kid can by a firearm... On the other hand, my brother(13 years) recently bought a sword at a medieval fair. Guns may be the fastest way to kill, but they aren't the only way.
Altimentaly anything can be used as a weapon, you could kill w/ your fists but not many would say they should be band as many others have said here, violence is a social problem, just like piracy over P2P networks, the tools are irrelevant.
