Off topic, I know, but that reminds me of this one...
Johnny, finding life a bore,
Drank some H2SO4.
Johnny's father, an MD,
Gave him some CACO3
Now he's neutralised, its true,
But he's full of CO2
Does anyone know of a Linux Accounts package that will do UK payroll? I use gnuCash for personal accounts, but for company accounts I'm currently tied to Intuit's QuickBooks. I'd desperately like to give that up for both ideological and financial reasons...
Alternatively, is there anyone with enough knowlege of UK payroll processing to help start a project? I'd be happy to contribute coding, but I know nothing about payroll other than what QuickBooks tells me I need to pay...
Not necessarily... I would assume Bill is talking about proper Windows crashes. Have you not noticed a box that comes up IIRC saying something like "Windows has recovered from a serious error" (i.e. your machine crashed and burned and we rebooted it for you), and "would you like to tell Microsoft about this?"
I think Bill would be the first one to quietly ignore an application seg fault (especially third party) or whatever.
Hang on... the article isn't saying that if you have the odd shag or three (per day) you're going to lose your ability to code in perl... it's just getting married and settling down (thank goodness)
It seems to me that a lot of park keepers seem to have the attitude that if you're enjoying yourself you must be doing something wrong, and should go elsewhere.
What on earth is the point of a park if people can't enjoy it, so long as they do no damage and don't annoy other parklife?
I'm taking the slow approach with my current employers... when the opportunity arises, I tell them it would be more efficient to work from home. We agree deliverables and then in (maybe) three or four days I come back with the completed code. Doesn't matter whether I worked like a demon for one day and took three days off, or kept regular hours. As long as I deliver, they are happy.
If we all try to push for these small steps where we can, then hopefully general perception of telecommuting will change. I'd love to be able to work from home every day.
No. It's not the same. Few contractors force companies to pay the big rates, the clients are usually falling over themselves to get the good guys when there's a skills shortage. They could take less experienced staff if they felt they were being coerced.
Whereas a lot of contractors now have no choice. Take the cut or run the risk of not finding work at all for the next six months.
I'm NOT complaining about market fluctuations though, don't get me wrong. Just the attitude of some clients.
I'm not asking for your sympathy. I'm good at what I do and I'm hardly on the breadline. I just object to the way our employers saw that contractors were over a barrel, couldn't easily move, and applied wave after wave of cuts, in violation of the "contract" we had.
The guys that left in disgust are (mainly) still looking for another contract. I'm staying put, and, yes, I agree, having the opportunity to work on stuff I wouldn't have done in the bull market is A Good Thing. Especially when I move to a new contract when the market picks up.
True. I'm not complaining, it's a market-driven game. But it's a bit dispiriting when clients think they have you over a barrel and can do what they like.

I missed that post... hot damn that was funny. I agree with you.
No, he lives in the UK. I think he's got the .it domain because it could stand for I.T. rather than Italy.
Yeah... I have this game called "Chess". It's just far too complicated. It will never catch on.

The desk is design to concieveable be placed within the Apple brand.
Let's hope his design skills are better than his grammar...
On a desk like that, where would I put the pizza and the stuffed Tux??
Does anyone know how much one of these costs, approximately?

>Winamp, and ... well, who really uses anything else?
Er... xmms? I would have thought a few of my buds here use it too...
Hell, I'm having a whale of a time. Your mileage may vary.

Scientific support for my choice of the bachelor lifestyle. And I thought I was just being selfish.
>who REALLY knows where Austria is...? Are you George Bush????
You can do it in KDE's Konqueror. Just type ~/*.mp3 (or whatever) and only matching files are displayed.
I'm comfortable with this... in fact I'm hoping this is what the alleged death chamber at Guantanamo Bay is earmarked for.
Grrr... this just makes me want to pirate music.

I'm pretty sure I saw a robotic table tennis (ping pong) player on TV recently. Damn impressive. Anyone else see it, or was I dreaming?
Micropayments are a tax on speech
Oh come on... do you complain about your telephone bill in the same way?
It comes with a 1m extension as well, so you probably wouldn't have to take it off.

Nah, Deutsche Bank. I used to work at CSFB though (and have friends still there) and they've done the same thing. In fact all the big banks have.
