  1. Re:Full of assumptions... on Microsoft Could Earn Billions From Office For iOS · · Score: 1

Are you serious? It cost more to have lunch at Mcdonalds with the family. If you are using it heavily, at $60 it would pay itself off in no time. I don't have a tablet but i did purchase the Home Office edition 2010 and I have long since forgotten about that $100 bucks or whatever it was. If it has value to you why would $20 be some magic cutoff point? The free alternatives are there for everyone anyway. If the free versions don't do what you need and you really "need" that functionality the difference between $60 and $20 is trivial for most people.

Facebook free for three months now. I just came to the realization that I was not interacting with all the people I care about in my life on Facebook. I was interacting with them in real life. The only interaction was with "fringe" friends or people you felt obligated to friend because they are "friends of friends" you met somewhere. "Hey great, Joe's wife took a picture of her Big Mac and fries and is enjoying a delicious shake." Ya, I'm outta here.

I agree with this. At first I was the same thinking that it was better back in the day. Its a natural reaction to cling to some "idealized notion of the past" as you say. Now that I have a son we have bought the new legos. Sure it is build by numbers the first time you put it together, but the fun is in taking it apart and putting all the parts from a different set into the same bucket. Now you can start creating all kinds of things. My son is only 3 and half years old and we already spend hours playing and creating things. He amazes me with the things he cobbles together. Today for him its all about garbage trucks and we build all kinds of whacky setups. Legos are still very creative, and in my opinion, much more fun since the old block sets. Just remember the real fun happens after you take them apart.

I sound like them? You just answered the question. When you leave they are fucked. I have had to clean up too many homebrew implementations after the superstar went on to something better without leaving so much as a one pager of documentation. Yes most of them were brilliant implementations and became mission critical. Many of them were done with little or no budget, which makes it even more impressive. But your bosses should be fired for putting the company at risk and not having a proper change management and succession policy in place for their now "mission critical" apps. I don't blame you, your an IT guy who can easily move onto something else when the place implodes.

Their .ca and .com sites may as well be two different companies all together. The only thing that is similar is the look and feel. Selection, price, shipping...you name it, it's a whole different experience.

When I was kid we used to go to my uncle's "cabane a sucre" (translates as sugar shack) on the outskirts of Sherbrooke to make the stuff. You need 40 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of syrup. Reduce it slowly, the longer you reduce it the darker it gets. I prefer a medium to dark but most of the places sell light. Makes sense as it takes less time. Pouring hot maple syrup over cold snow and eating it right away after it solidifies is one of lifes good things. Also bringing it to a boil and stirring it constantly turns it to sugar. That makes my mouth water.
