I agree that the school has asked this of the school for one important reason. They can... they are a catholic school, and can ask their students to do this while at school. However I do disagree with the fact that these people cannot blog at home. At home is a whole other ball game, and the school has no jurisdiction there.
However while at school, the school can ask the students to not visit certain sites. Its not federally or state funded (at least most private catholic schools wouldn't be) so they can make up their rules as they wish, within state limits. Its the school's responsibility to keep the kids safe in the school environment... at home... the parents. So I am split on this.
Personally, I am a great fan of the Apollo Era... Large rockets and such. However, I am a fan of large spaceships too. I would definately be a fan of constructing a few large spaceships in orbit... say 100 meters long with numerous rooms and labs in them... something for a very long haul. but thats just me wanting to see Starships... Lets build a Galaxy Class... sorry off topic.
Anyway I would love to see something thats more "safe" and something that can provide us with a venue to get to the moon, Mars... Orbit Venus perhaps.... and go on to the asteroid belt.
Well this is the first good piece of innovative software I have seen come out of Microsoft in awhile. Being able to connect to numerous Access POints at once not only creates an Aux connection but may also allow for relaying of wireless signals over larger areas. Is this going to create the ability for large scale wireless networks for places like... The middle of no where, which is where I am from so that when I head home to see the parents I can have wireless and not have JUST dialup as an option. Oh god I hope so. I hate dialup with a passion, how did I deal with it when I lived at home?! HOW?!?!
While I do find this article interesting, I have known about the designers of microprocessors doing this for years. While we see the cute pictures, I am wondering what kinds of messages people design into their processors. "You Suck! Love AMD" hehe I am not bias towards intel or AMD... But I do think that is funny:)
Well, read that entire article. Microsoft does have a very interesting History. I need to say that the information it provides on the history of the earlier versions of Windows is very noteworthy. Personally I have OS/2 Warp and I liked it. But I was a kid at the time these things came out... I never knew anything of other OS's until ohhh 1999 when I first used Linux. I still always come back to using Windows because...well... I can play games on it, Work uses it, and its much easier to work with. I don't like having to program to get my OS to work right. Hehe. But I enjoyed the article. I am looking forward to Vista too as soon as that comes out (late, right?)
As someone whose family recieved royalties from the music industry.... yes. Some of their campaign information I agree with. I don't agree with "stealing" music at all. However I don't like them trying to stop people from recording it when it is given to them through subscription. Its a slightly weird stance...
Heh. Well some things the RIAA has done I agree with. Stealing music is simply wrong. However, radio is free... if you want to record some staticy music with the possibility of random ads being on your CD why not? Hearing horrible quiality all the time will want you to buy the the album I would think.
I can record radio on my Computer, Radio in my car, Boom Box radio etc. Is their goal to encrypt all radio transmissions? Serius and XM radio are pay for subscriptions. WTF?
When are they going to sue my birds for listening to music all day? The birds could start mocking the music exactly!
"Your birds are singing these copywritten songs... We are suing them. They need to appear in court on these days!"
I don't think MS will ever offer served apps. Its not something I could EVER see them doing because they would have more and more issues on people finding a way around their security... OpenOffice for Google is a good thing for THEM since they don't offer an Office Suite for sale in almost every PC store. But its a possibility I guess, but MS would never make much money on it I don't think.
It seems that online word processing is not really a good way for users or even corporations to have a good handle on their documents. Seems like another added layer of security to access documents. Not only that but an annoying layer to access the documents too. I like clicking on the Word processor Icon and everything done locally. Its a good idea to fight against the mammoth Micro$oft, but if you are gonna fight against M$ office, put out a product that can allow you to edit stuff without internet access or without having to open a web browser goto google and find the doc.
BTW... OpenOffice... Is it really Sun's project or everyones... I would refer to it as just "OpenOffice."
Personally, I keep a blog over at Live Journal (link here) But I will never understand how people make 400k a year off of their blogs. I write about mostly everything on my blog but advertising? Never thought of it. Now that AOHell sees it as a potential way to make money they are buying up all the blog sites! Keep LJ Free! Hehe.
PvP is one of the greatest things ever. Allows you to show other players who is boss. I hate games with the touchy feely nice flowery rules of "No PvP or face our wrath"
RTS along with D&D? Something definately worth while. I have always been rather surprised that Wizards never came up with a MMORPG that is D&D related. Lets hope they do... dragonlance related too. I would love to run around Krynn beating up the baddies!
I shall settle for gemstone IV click here for link for now. text Muds PWN too ya know:)
I completely agree with this article... My first programming job was with me and 2 other programmers. They took me on to do all the stuff they could not get to so I could learn the business and how everything was put together in MVC with Beans and DAOs in java. However after only 6 months on the job, learning java again the way they wanted me to do it, I was laid off because of "Financial" reasons. Why I was were, the last month was full of little work and more and more sitting around being bored for hours at a time.
A few weeks before the lay off.... I scheduled an interview with another company... And I was laid off the day before the interview. They did not know I was going but they gave me 2 weeks severence and sent me on my way. I went into the interview the next morning and the VP of the company hired me on the spot.
Bonus a week of paid vacation and a week of double pay.
Now I do sit in a cubical... But thats alright I feel secure here. Theres 20 developers and I am not at the bottom. I started here as a mid career developer in ASP (learned the entire damn thing in 3 days) and I feel confident in my job.
I have to admit a cubical does suck but sometimes for large corporations cubicals is what you get... an office would be nice but hey I am not complaining. I am 23 years old making 4 times what I did in College working full time as a tech at Best Buy. (Best Buy paid only $11.50 an hour! WTF!)
Anyway, I agree. If a company stops giving you encouragement, work, and you feel dejected... look elsewhere! I did, and thank god I got a job the day after I was laid off making twice as much... Oh well.
Recently we all discussed this very topic. However, as I stated in that thread, a planet should be defined as something above a certain mass, certain shape, with a certain type of orbit. This new planet (which I read about months ago) should definately be a planet in our star System. Not only that but what was the name of that other planet that was just slightly smaller than Pluto? Quotar? I think.
Anyway, Xena (as bad as the name) should definately be considered a planet, especially since it has a moon, AND is bigger than a body that was considered a planet in the past anyway.
However, like I said Xena is a horrible name, I suggest: Apollo:)
For some reason I am hearing the Jurassic Park sound track playing... wait, I am playing it.
I think that this is awesome. I saw a special on the Discovery Channel called "Raising the Mammoth" where they went out into Siberia looking for a frozen Mammouth in the snow and such to get DNA and clone one using a Elephant from India as a Surrogate...
My only concern is... if we do get into cloning extinct animals and insects, what effect will it have on the ecosystem? Also is it possible to do at the present time?
Nice to see SS1 going to the smithsonian in DC. It will be a nice spot for a piece of american innovation. I shall head down there for that since space is always going to be my #1 interest.... but I could never make money at it... But its nice to know this historical piece will be kept around for us all to see:)
Personally as a ASP and Java/JSP developer I don't think that the request/response/session objects will EVER be secure. Sure you can code it to the best of your ability and most secure as you can get, but there will always be a way especially with MS's seemingly low scale way it handles these objects in IE.
Well, after reading through the information and absed on things that have happened over the last 4 years.... This is probably a good thing. VOIP is one of the few communications media which is not as regulated as say.... a normal Phone.
I think it is definately a good thing the FBI has this power. Its a political stance I take on it, since we need to protect ourselves. As for Encryption... Well, Encryption I am sure can be broken by the FBI anyway so no use whining about it.
That is one that I had found annoyed the DBA's at work as well, which is why they switched to DB2. Stupid reason if you ask me... if its free and open source, why not work around it and save the company $60000 heh.
But I agree, scripting for a backup can be rather annoying to anyone.
I had never known the history of Google until today (Thanks for the link.) I need to say that it does inspire me to program SOMETHING useful. I am a code monkey at my desk as we speak, but I wish to do something for myself. I have been looking into several ideas I have had though, so hopefully one will work.
Anyway, Happy Birthday Google! Where would I search for stuff without you? (NOT MSN! mawahaha!)
After looking through the list of the top Sci Fi shows, I agree with some of the top ten, others I do not. Personally, I feel Deep Space Nine should be obviously in the top ten. A contuous storyline for 7 years with much more dramatic twists than TNG ever had. However seeing TOS as #1 was rather nice.
Sliders, in my opinion is also one of the BEST Scifi shows ever made. The day I heard Sliders was coming out on DVD I was looking forward to it... finally purchased the first three seasons and I am looking forward to the last two to come out on DVD.
The one thing I do have a problem with for sci-fi shows though is that even though the ones that were chosen are great, the companies who produce them charge way too much for their DVD sets. $130 for one season of TNG or ds9 is a little too high.
X Files... Awesome. Can never get enough of the XFiles. I am quite impressed with the list minus the exclusion of Deep Space Nine.
Personally, I have never given this much thought. Defining a planet on its size cannot be it. If that were true, I am sure in some star systems you might see a planet the size of Pluto in a orbit patter much like a comet. Is that a planet? No. Its a a LARGE comet.
Obviously a planet should be based on size. However orbital verlocity and orbital path should also factor in. The other planets in this star System would then be considered apart of the planet definition. Astmophere... Possibly might be something to consider in the definition of "planet" vs "planetoid"
But I think orbital mechanics, size and maybe some other small details should play in myself.
Alright,
So I have been using AOL for years since its the only thing my mother will use, cannot seem to figure out how to Email anyone outside of AOL...
IMHO I don't think Microsoft purchasing any amount of AOL will hurt Google since it is more of a household name than any of MS's attempts at anything that good does. You ask any college kid where they do their searching, Google will be the answer... Same with Google Earth etc... Althought I still use MapQuest, eventhough it has gotten me lost numerous times.
Anyway I don't think the purchasing of AOL will hurt google's commonly used name around the world. If anything, AOL will hurt Microsoft just as it hurt Time Warner.
