You don't have to go 100% authoritarian to have major problems. NK is an usually extreme situation where the you dare not risk the majority organizing because they all see some of the BS and when they realize everybody does and thinks like them a tipping point is inevitable. This is where a Twitter revolution can do a lot of good; but that doesn't make Twitter all good either... think of the harm its causing in democracies (more harm than good... often technology is 80/20... mostly negative. sadly.)
Working control can be done without drawing attention to the control system. The Barbra Streisand effect can be avoided. We have A Brave New World control scheme and it's evolving along those lines. You censor by distracting with alternatives; including "alternative facts." Facebook/Youtube kills the public space by replacing it with something customized to be better to YOU. This is always preferable because shared public anything is going to have more compromises. They don't have to BAN something by force like 1984... that is a primitive last resort with high resource use. A Brave New World is one of positive psychology which has been proven more effective; but even so, it is the flip side technique. You can't fool everybody all the time; but if you use enough tricks you can fool a greater number.
Then you just have to devise a system for the minority who slip past the cracks to be alienated and opposed by the controlled majority. The minority problem can be solved by more 1984 measures because the majority won't care if YouTube censors something unpopular or nutty sounding to them. (many impossible nutty things sound nutty at 1st because it's so revolutionary.) The problem is you hand over control of this public space to 3rd parties with more power than governments had. Sure nobody is arrested, but they are not heard and will be filtered out quickly. It's not gone far enough just yet to become a big enough problem to make an obvious point but it'll do plenty of harm to a lesser degree long before it becomes so bad that you can see something and say "we should do something about that." It may never, but it doesn't mean that the damage is not going on just because you can't easily see it running rampant.
The grandkids probably didn't have as much trouble with that until they should. Some people these days claim to date by smart phone... only meeting rarely. Dumping by just disconnecting / ignoring sounds like a common thing too.
Communication tech doesn't seem to really be making people more connected on a human level. Technically they can send more data more often but it's hollow... I expect to hear more studies showing negative results as the younger generations continue to live in their bubbles. My generation lost the sense of community which died during the boomer era, but the next ones are losing more than that.
If I rendered stuff for a living, then I'd not use a laptop for it. We have general purpose computers so we can do anything on them we feel like.
You buy "pro" gear so you can use it 100% not be stuck with a tiny power supply that has to borrow from your battery every time you run the CPU at 100%.... adding to battery cycle count... which BTW, are not officially a user replaceable item. The thermals are a false problem; adding a heat sink fixed it.
Yet again, blind-seer... I see you assuming confidently despite being blind... such a fitting handle.
The bottom metal plate they've always had, make it do something:
1) super thin unibody like now. no battery. just a few ports. like now.
2) cheap: battery IS the metal plate on the bottom. glued to the plate. Essentially, the battery's bottom cover is the metal bottom of the laptop. Simple cable plug connects it. Keeps DIY people happy and they can continue their current behavior.
3) medium: metal plate on bottom has side ridges so it makes laptop THICKER. add more battery.
4) pro: same as above but side ridge has all the needed missing ports. Added SSD too* MAGSAFE PORT. (added weight = magnet now works + it's damaged more if it weighs more.)
5) fancy: pro + more ports + thicker for more battery.
6) 3rd party products:
- hardened in-field add-ons with wrap around plastic/rubber to protect the whole bottom and sides of the laptop. - docking solutions; bottom plates designed to dock - GPU + Fans + even more SSD... 3rd party power... crazy big batteries... 12V car power... eGPU is nice but not portable. People USED to be able to lift 8lb laptops , some of us still can.
* All models: MB has a simple internal PCI connector (as they used to do in various forms forever... to get wifi or cards or bluetooth, etc.) This allows for any kind of bottom plate circuitry.
When people are making LISTS and rank ordering them to fix what used to be the best. Windows users used to buy Mac then run windows simply because the laptop was so good. not anymore.
Apple finally needs to get vaccinated... Hopefully the disease over at USB 3,4...Intel with Thunderbolt... doesn't spread any further. Obviously, Apple got it when they were in bed with Intel on Thunderbolt 3.
MagSafe plugs didn't last... the cables used a stupid type of plastic too. but making $$ in replacements wasn't enough to counter the brain damaging USB virus.
YES MagSafe maxed at 85 Watts. Apple CRIPPLED all their laptops so you run your battery down doing serious work. Their LIE is heat related but if you stick your laptop out in the winter so the fan never comes on, it will still draw over 85W and start pulling from the battery until it goes dead! Recent OS updates kept the machine from dying so it just cycles down to half speed like it was overheating. Not a PRO device if you can not do PRO workloads on it. (think rendering overnight) plus you can't replace the battery you are wearing down with extra cycles (anytime you peg 100% it draws from battery for the missing power.)
EXACTLY! You have to sell it as a new revolutionary DONGLE. Apple is obsessed with the stupid things. The "super dongle" which snaps on the side and puts back all the ports the idiots removed.
Parent is right... but: 2012 is the last decent MacBook Pro. I've given up on them getting back any retired competent employees. I am fine with Thunderbolt 1 eGPU just wish it wasn't a mess to get it working.
+ REPLACABLE SSD (they can have defects, always getting larger) + REPLACABLE RAM (2012 last one) + 2nd SSD slot. My 2012 DVD-R is replaced with a cheap HD used as a 2nd backup. slower cheaper larger is fine. I realize they'll never go back to spinning rust storage.
Sometimes people just reply to a posted comment not because it's a direct reply to that comment.
Free speech is useless if NOBODY HEARS IT. Such as the free speech zones created during the Bush years where they attempted to move them so far away that they were irrelevant.
When you KILL the public space, nobody can get up on a soap box; that can become trespassing.
The internet may currently still have some options open... but it's moving away from freedom:
We are headed into another puppet democracy; where you get to vote but if your votes are even counted fairly, your candidates will be unknown OR won't even be on the ballet OR don't have a chance so you pick the lesser of two evils. Your "free" and it's a "democracy" but only for sake of argument; functionally, it's dead. If that didn't make a point, think of somebody trying to fool you into thinking a gift card is like cash. Which is close to what Facebook is aiming for with it's recreation of the internet, AOL style.
FOOD for thought: What is the difference between propaganda and education? (being correct has nothing to do with either.)
Naturally, they SELL you on the best situation possible while saying "think of the children."
YOU do not get sick if you are vaccinated. Mandatory customers with 100% lawsuit protection is the DREAM situation for them. Naturally, government negotiated free drugs are not their ideal (but still very profitable.)
Industry is promoting this stuff. WAKE UP!
Odds are more likely a phone driver kills the kid. or drunk driver. Are you pushing for laws disabling smart phone use in a moving car? Why not? "think of the children"
You don't really give a fuck. This tribal propaganda has you hating on "THEM" sub-humans. If you do hate them, then let them suffer naturally of their own making.
Once you hand over your freedom, then watch them stick you with questionable products you can't opt-out from and have to endure being one of "THOSE PEOPLE" just for reasonable objections.
Apple bought Xerox tech and hired some of their people. They didn't steal a thing except in a metaphorical sense because Xerox was too stupid to know what they had. Xerox got a bunch of Apple stock which naturally they sold sooner than they should have... again, not thinking long term.
As far as touch screens; they did a tiny bit-- a lot of the major UI was done at universities already if you were following the demos and papers back before Apple made a thing. A huge amount of so-called innovation comes from academia but it doesn't have a marketing budget... plus some student work is how people get hired or create a startup which is bought out, etc.
If you believe big pharma doesn't measure human life in profits and will knowingly allow people to DIE if the lawsuits and coverups are far cheaper then you are as gullible as the anti-vaccine crowd.
1) You setup a pattern of acceptable censorship under the guise "think of the children" and it's no different than tyrants use fear and demonization to cover their power grabs.
2) Creating dark areas will attract evil people where they have little risk of exposure. Like gay pedophiles are attracted to highly trusted positions at religious institutions... Improperly dealing with a legit issue (or not) CREATES future problems.
3) people who do not get vaccinated get sick. maybe die. their choice. you don't have to worry, you got the shot and you lucked out on not having side effects that may exist.
4) Yes their children might die. Their bad luck. Their children are more likely to die in a car accident from a cell phone driver... don't see you campaigning on that issue as extremely...
Attacking representative democracy's ability to function should be a treason class crime. Tampering with elections being obvious, but feedback systems for regulatory boards are also representatives and should also be included.
1) replaceable parts? like legos... now you can upgrade your RAM, easily! (but only with Apple RAM with it's special lego shape to make everything easier!)
2) remove all audio from apple computers. courageous new USB dongles!
3) wireless laptop charging stands-- no more charging cables! just buy a stand for everywhere you go!
4) Remember how Apple invented a way to tell time by putting a screen to your smart phone on your wrist? Now you can do math with a tiny tablet the size of a pack of cards without having to pull out your smart phone... we call it... the iCalc. It does math!
5) Sick of cables and losing wireless mics for talking on your phone? Now wear an apple badge and live like it's Star Trek... It is a nice big white Apple logo so everybody can see you are an Apple user.
6) Apple Electric Car: it has it's on BAR and wifi and drives for you. Just drive everywhere Siri knows about and trust Apple Maps to get you to your destinations. With full Yelp and Facebook integration so everybody can know everywhere you go.
7) Apple ID: We all know you love using your Apple account! Now, everything you do will require your Apple account and we've teemed up with Governments so you no longer need a Photo ID-- it's on your iPhone! You can wirelessly hand your ID to the police without having to give them your phone!
8) Oh, and don't worry about privacy, our new AI will know from your expressions that you are being forced to unlock your phone. You can bypass this feature by painting your face black and blue if you truly need still get in...
9) Non "PRO" models will be rebranded as "CHEAP" and their prices will remain the same.
10) iParent. Since most parents have handed their children over to us already, we've taught Siri to be a parent. Now you will have more time for Facebook because you know your children but knowing they will finally get the parenting you haven't had the time to give them in your busy modern life.
They ditched when they saw it wasn't going to do well; otherwise, they'd pull crap like killing Superman just to sell some more tired old crap.
Hey, isn't Superman a SUN powered god? Didn't superman become a Jesus proxy? They didn't have the guts to use superman; it had to have crossed their mind.
As stupid as it sounds it could have been funny to see a make over Jesus in spandex and a cape multiplying food and being a preachy un-dead immortal trying to appeal to little boys -- who tend to resolve their emotions physically... in a comic book character fashion.
I sure hope somebody at South Park catches wind of this story! This could turn out so much better...
Robocallers FAILED to purchase Pai and now they will pay the price.
Don't expect a fully working solution because that likely would upset Pai's owners.
It says something is wrong when officials replace citizen with consumer and it DOES impact thinking to do so. I am NOT a consumer, I am a citizen, a human and not merely a cog in your machine.
They work at dehumanizing their "human resources" so they can sleep at night when they pull these things all the time. People wonder how genocide and such horrible things can even happen when there are actually a bunch of Satan worshipers involved... They only need look towards their local MBAs.
They need to pay a price for laying off human workers like they are excess resources so they are not so casual about hiring them and give them stuff to do for longer term planning if something doesn't work out. You never see them saying "our highly paid MBAs didn't meet the expectations they sold us on so we are laying them off." It's always shifting blame to somebody or something other than themselves... Their gambling with the organizations stability hardly has consequences and even when it does they get a golden parachute and find another place to gamble.
There are real costs to laying people off abruptly which are externalized as much as possible by management... and they'll go so far as to exploit bankruptcy on purpose and steal the pension fund. When will people realize sociopaths gravitate towards management? They serve a useful purpose but need to be kept from sharp objects and monitored. A % of laid off people get into drugs and depression and develop health issues -- with costly results for society. One would think they'd go for the higher pay people to minimize the # of people. (besides isn't the purpose of higher pay is higher responsibility?)
I'm too late for many to read this but I'll make the point anyhow:
Marketing is a necessary evil every capitalist and free market supporter MUST support as an essential part of their economic religious beliefs. It's hypocritical to oppose it. If you just THINK seriously about it you can't see it any other way.
Can it go too far? can it be too much? Well, you can't believe that without also saying the same for capitalism and consumerism.
The problem is that the optimal balance is thrown off by improvements in technology and productivity as well as globalization etc. Due to the nature of the system (or lack thereof.. being "free") you can't put the genie back into the bottle without blasphemy against your economic belief system. That is what it boils down to. Not enough jobs, because demand is not strong enough; people must become bigger consumers to support the imbalanced system... and we are running into resource limits as well as consumption limits as it spirals more out of control. Not to mention the 3rd world who has been shafted the whole time and will always be because it CAN NOT scale outward to them... we'll blame the victims who are removed from our understanding as well... it's human nature. Times will get interesting as the 1st world feels the pain and marketing desperately tries to compensate for a larger problem.
Automation cost more jobs in the last decade than immigrants or outsourcing and it is a trend that will continue according to UBS... who in only interested in long term investing.
GOOD that Trump is clueless about how much of a job killer this will be; especially for his base. IT people will not like being hated more than immigrants.
NOTE: Canada is #1 in AI because the smart people left for Canada during Bush's crimes, properly recognizing the terminal cancer in America's body politic; Trump is just a bigger tumor for those who were still ignoring the signs - the smart people should continue to emigrate. The USA is not capable to adapting to the changes that are coming; they can't even solve simple political problems already solved elsewhere.
1) Most the stuff you and your children can not catch because you were vaccinated so being exposed isn't a problem. That is why you got vaccinated in the 1st place.
2) If their kids suffer, it's their own fault. We don't have civilized healthcare but if we did, then it would cost the tax payers something and an argument could be had on that front.
3) We are overpopulated.
4) Bad paranoid parents of low IQ (in your opinion) then shouldn't be stopped from lowering their own impact on the gene pool. We have to stop helping Darwin Award contenders from having as many offspring as they can.
5) The actually quite corrupt medical industry does actually create problems and cover them up. Big Tobacco was an extreme example and it took decades and they are still bigger corps now than ever. The medical industry is less evil and more influential, to not imagine them getting away with murder for profit is just naive.
6) Statistics. Americans do not grasp math, especially statistics. Even so, people don't think rationally most the time and when you say their kid has a 10% chance of being fucked up unless they get a shot with a 1% chance of also being fucked up... if they hear about that 1% they don't want to take the risk. Don't just apply this topic, Americans freak over everything that isn't even HALF as deadly as driving a car.
7) P.R. firms helped create the problem. Hired to do a brilliant divide and conquer on where they can get you science and math people attacking their critics for them. Instead of all people uniting against a single bad drug, we've got a Luddite war and nobody is even talking about specifics which would harm the PR firm's employer.
Wish I had mod points. Economics is a captured degree; they largely just protect the status quo. Really, it's a good sounding degree for somebody who can't get a Statistics degree... like an Engineer who falls back to being an Architect.
Some actually are good at it and can stand out more in the fall back career path; most are there for a reason. Economics as far as my understanding of the degree is half statistics, is it not? That is what I was told.
If that is the case, her statistics training should be quite useful in policy making since all those lawyers seem to have zero grasp of numbers. We should get some accountants elected too... Hell, we need STEM! not law degrees!
People involved in reality and truth as a background instead of people trained to LIE for their client's benefit... and their client is rarely the voters.
blindseer -- what a perfect name for somebody who does not belong on a science forum. I could see it ironically but with mindless posts like this it's a blind poster who thinks he can see. I should create a Dunning-Kruger account and friend him...
Public library: socialism.
Social Security: socialism. written by an actual communist! well, guess then it has to be evil to take care of old people and cripples.
Free Fire Dept: socialism. They are still not free in some backward places in the USA. don't pay your bill and they will just watch your house burn. seriously. At least they don't rob you and get into fights with other Fire Companies like they actually did before being socialized.
John Smith the big man himself behind capitalism used major socialist arguments in justifying capitalism. It's why most people supported and continue to blindly support capitalism --- the belief it does the most good for the most people begins to prove wrong when it goes too far out of control; it's not only when it gets over regulated which is just 1 way it can fail to serve it's whole purpose for being allowed.

The USA needs WAR to get them to pay for anything. I should have figured that the highway system was a form of military spending.
Furthermore, at the time did you realize Sara Palin was a Dingbat? (I'm assuming at this point you'll admit she is.)
Taxes keep you from being raped for real. Not all medicine tastes good and yes some of it barely works if at all. That does not make it all bad.
