  1. Re:ADHD=Bored Person Syndrome. on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

Obviously, you know absolutely nothing about the disorder.

ADHD is not just about not being able to focus. It includes forgetfulness, inattention to detail, inpulsivity, and even, in the most severe adult cases, hyperactivity.

However, since I haven't experienced the last symptom since I was about 13, I can't discuss it.

ADD in adults is very hard to deal with. Even though I do have a job that I love, my ADD often gets me into trouble. I forget meetings, appointments, and tasks. I misplace things like books, writing utensils, etc. I don't mean occasionally, I mean EVERY DAY. The last book I bought, I bought two copies just in case I misplaced one. I often do things that I later regret, and I often make silly mistakes. I'm just lucky that my employer is very understanding.

What's even worse is being a college student with ADD. Even though I like the one class I'm taking this summer, I can't seem to ever "get around" to study for it. I set a time slot, but by the time that slot comes, I've done already forgot and am on to something else. That's why I've got a C in that class right now.

However, unlike most ADD sufferers, I am willing to accept the consequences of my actions and not blame it on the disorder. I don't like to tell people about my ADD, because I fear it will cause them to look at me differently. I know they do, I've experienced it in the past. Also, I don't believe in Ritalin or Adderall, I agree with a previous poster that occupational therapy is the answer.

However, I just can't seem to get that to work for me. So, last week, I went to my doctor and finally caved in to his request to just try Adderall. I've been taking it for five days or so now (when I remember to), and while I am starting to see some improvement, I don't like the side effects. I feel like a zombie sometimes after a long day. That way why I stopped taking the Ritalin when I was younger. So, it looks like I'll be stopping this, as well.

So goes the life of an adult with ADD.

It could have receded back into the depths and maintained quality but it put page-ranking first, attempting to attract and contain a particular audience.

I disagree. In case you haven't noticed, the title of the /. front page is "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters." So, of course /. is attracting a particular audience. That's a Good Thing.

Target audience is one of the most important decisions when designing a web site. "Good info" is a subjective concept. What's good to you is not necessarily good to me. But, chances are if I search for something that I'm looking for, PageRank can provide a sense of the more authoratative pages for that subject.

Also, putting stuff up for popularity's sake is a great reason to put something up. If I didn't want my employer's site to be seen, I wouldn't have put it up there. Attracting eyeballs is the only way to get good info. The more eyeballs, the better the accuracy of information. Why do you think peer review is such a big deal in scientific arenas (and it is, as I know from working for a big-name medical school)? If I was a scientist reviewing another scientist's work, then I would look at the writing aspects of the work. A little bit of style often makes information more credible to others. Don't ask me why, just know that it's human nature.

Just because the two sites are similar does not mean it's theft. I'd say about half of the sites on the web use the "tabs" interface theme and about half of those try to make it stylized with rounded corners and such. The first site I saw with those was Amazon, even though someone probably had it before them. Even /. uses it in preference sections. Next you're going to say Google stole Yahoo!'s design because it contains a search box.

You're not getting the point of this. It's not to prevent bootlegging. Get that? IT'S NOT TO PREVENT BOOTLEGGING.

It's for lazy-ass (law-abiding) people like me who don't feel like wasting a good Sunday drive going to the video store to return a movie. It should actually save people money, as the video stores won't have to spend anything to collect on past0due DVD rentals. I'm not saying it will, but it should.

All in all, this is A Good Thing.

  10. I don't see why this is such a bad idea on Self-Destructing DVD's Coming Soon · · Score: 1

It seems to me that this would be a great idea if it's cheap enough to mass-produce them. That way, I could rent a DVD from my local video store (no, not the evil Blockbuster) and not have to worry about late fees (which us forgetful people often incur). I would recommend expanding this to video game discs.

Obviously, this would be a bad idea for purchasing DVDs.

Overall, it seems like the poster hates the idea. I think he just misunderstands the technology or he thinks that this will impede his piracy attempts. It won't hurt those, you little script kiddies with your DeCSS and such. Those of us who live the legal way will applaud this new technology.

In fact, the only thing I'm worried about is the environmental impact of all those DVDs. Then again, it doesn't seem to bother AOL all that much.
