  1. Re:That's pretty amazing on Paralyzed Woman Walks Again · · Score: 1
I apologize for replying to my post, but here's some excerpts from the rednova news article.
So-called "multipotent" stem cells -- those found in cord blood -- are capable of forming a limited number of specialised cell types, unlike the more versatile "undifferentiated" cells that are derived from embroyos.
Additionally, umbilical cord blood stem cells trigger little immune response in the recipient as embryonic stem cells have a tendency to form tumors when injected into animals or human beings.
Well, I was half right...the woman received multipotent cells, not the undifferentiated type, but if you did get the undifferentiated cells, there is a possibility of developing tumors.
  2. Re:That's pretty amazing on Paralyzed Woman Walks Again · · Score: 1

IANAD, but since you're introducing undifferentiated cells, I think the side effect would be mutations. Do our bodies retain the same mechanisms that prevent stem cells from going in the wrong direction? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if the side effect would be cancer.

But, let's hope that my speculation isn't true. The development of this procedure is very promising!!

  3. Good Point, but may I add... on Richard Clarke on Cyberterrorism and Iraq · · Score: 1

You are correct: A war is won when the enemy gives in.

But there's a point everyone is missing about this e-mail business and why it's news: to Clarke, not being able to keep tabs on the Iraqi army after our ground troops rolled over Iraq was a huge mistake. What Clarke is saying was that the content of the e-mails to Iraqi officers was an early symptom of our poor post-war planning. And the problem wasn't our spamming them. A huge criticism of the post-war, according to Clarke, was Mr. Bremer disbanding the Iraqi army (and without pay!). The e-mail might have said how to surrender properly without getting killed and don't go home (and blend in!)

How could our enemy give in when they weren't there? Should we have employed the common Iraqi foot soldier to provide security or (more realistically) put them to work on multiple public work projects: would they be working to rebuild Iraq or shooting at American soldiers right now? Well, if we would have captured the Iraq army intact, at least we would have been able to track them/ID most of the army.

So for Clarke, this e-mail strategy as it was executed via its content was poorly thought out and just one of many shortcomings of our post-invasion game plan.

  7. It's not 7 hours straight... on 7 hour BBS Documentary Nearly Ready · · Score: 3, Interesting

Looking at the website, the DVD's content seems to be episodic with some decent interviews (like Dr. Cerf). I think it's amazing that he got 7 hours of tape just on BBS's. But for narrative's sake, I hope he grouped the interviews/footage into episodes that are either topical or chronological.

What type of treatment would you prefer on this subject?

I would prefer a topical divison of episodes because BBS gaming would be fascinating as I spent a bit of time playing them (my favorite was Trade Wars or was it called Space Wars? It feels like it was eons ago). I wonder if he addresses how they led into the multi-player games we currently have today. A discussion on modem development would also be interesting as would a discussion on the culture of BBS users. A topical division would also allow me to skip parts that might not interest me like BBS programs available on OS/2 (A topic which I could care less about). However, a chronological treatment would be fine, but I think it would get either tedious and/or obtuse by the end having weaved so many themes/points throughout it.
Lastly, since I work at a Science Center, I hope the episodes/chapters aren't too long because it would be great to show them in my gallery! Overall, I look forward to getting my hands on this!

For geeks, I think the pure technical challenge presented in creating a heuristic EULA reader would push any geeks limits. Plus, as far as training, it would allow said geek to become an expert in an inter-disciplinary subject.

And what about the legal challenges? I don't recall in the article that said robolawyer would change the EULA...BUT, what this robolawyer could do, just like heuristic spam filters, is warn you of ambigious or harmful clauses. You check out the flagged clause, google it, then make an educated decision (or consult with a lawyer, if you can). If said clause appears in a future EULA that you deemed unacceptable, then the robolawyer would have an easier time filtering out a bad EULA. This article is certainly provocative, and needs to be considered by us geeks.

Plus, I honestly don't see how your post is insightful, but so be it.

Having no interest in the political process other than disrupting it.
Having an interest in the political process but intent on disrupting it.

    Free Speech:

Claiming to be an official VanHollen website and posting incorrent information.
Presenting false/libelous information from a political opponent who has a vested interest in the outcome of the election. (IIRC, some politicians, even presidential candidates, have successfully sued for slander/libel, but it's usually way after the fact/election).

This is an incomplete list, and of course, IANAL. But I really think this is a case the FEC should get involved in because a)it could be potentially libelous, and b) the politician who's running the site has a vested interest in the race (as opposed to a "group of concerned citizens").

It doesn't quite fit in that universe...All the places they show probably didn't care (Tatooine being a nominally Hutt controlled planet), couldn't celebrate openly because of violent repression (Naboo being the Emperor's home planet and Coruscant being the capital of the Empire). The only one where people might celebrate would be Cloud City (we don't know how much the Empire took over after Lando told the people to basically bug out). Also, would Naboo and Coruscant be able to get the news of the Emperor's demise because of the Empire's control of the media....

$500 rule....after you build your rig, every year afterward, set aside $500 for your upgrades. It depends on what you think was weakest or could be augmented when you built your rig. Every other year, I buy a new video card (200-300) and that leaves me a couple bucks to buy a new HD or peripheral. The other years, it's the ol' MOBO, CPU, and RAM upgrade. Keep to this plan, you won't have to buy a whole new system every three years, and have an above average gaming rig. I've been using the same case and 19" monitor for the last 5 years and haven't spent more than $500 a year upgrading it. I have a p4 2.8 with 1gb memory, 37gb 10k rpm raptor and 160 gb media hd, and a 9600pro (guess what next year is).
