I'm at Duke...let's just say I'm "in" on a lot of computing stuff...and I don't know of any supercomputer on campus of any significant magnitude. There's a couple clusters....
Maybe you were just making a joke....I had no idea.:)
Okay so the exploit works for me fine when I am using the normal "Ask me for a password" from the screensaver. But when I enable the screen saver via "Lock Screen" in the Keychain Menu Extra (open Keychain Access, go to View Menu to activate), the buffer overflow exploit crashes the password dialog, but then the screen stays black and asks me for a password again if I type a keystroke or move the mouse.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is this a temporary fix?
This is the smartest thing I've read on Slashdot all day. And I've been bored, so I've read a lot. I agree. While I may be willing to take the risk of driving 100 MPH on the Interstate, it is not only me that I am affecting--there are the other potential crash victims to consider. So it's illegal.
I already find people who are alarmed that waves from radio towers, cell phones, radar guns, etc etc are bombarding them constantly. They'd really flip if they knew that their tissue was actually being affected by it!
I'm standing behind 802.11g--I am a huge fan of backwards compatibility, and technical limitations or not, it will serve us well before the next great thing comes along (that doesn't beam into my cells!):)
I hope they don't get through the whole rendering process and discover that something is wrong....like they did in Titanic (James Cameron was pissed that one of the propellers on the ship was spinning when the ship was sinking).
MS will rewrite the standards implemented in Frontpage and Windows to break IE Mac.
Whaaa? Standards? In Windows?::chuckles:: Silly fermion...there's no standards in Windows...any reported "standard" is littered with Proprietary Technology in addition....be it ActiveX, DirectX, WMA, WMV, CIFS (yes...), JScript, etc etc etc etc etc.
And Frontpage is just awful. I've never been 100% impressed with any Webpage Editor as far as standards-compliance goes (though DreamWeaver MX seems good)...but I *hate* Frontpage. But you are correct that tons of Dime-a-dozen web "designers" know only the MS Product.
So the theoretical situation you present, MS changing the "standards additions" it makes, could also be applied to Office Documents, should they ever cease Office:Mac development. Old Office:Mac could be used for a little while...until the document format changed yet again.
I sure can. I was referring to the in-game screenshots and actual driving movies. They are pretty damned gorgeous.
Project Gotham 1 and 2 have some nice graphics, for sure, but the gameplay sucks hardcore in comparison to Gran Turismo. It's laughable to compare them.
Personally, I was rooting for the new Racing Sim. It looks incredible and GT3 was as realistic a driving/racing game as has been so far unleashed upon this Earth.
And it adds a sense of nobility to the "common" car thief, who is "fighting the man" (the bad guy) by stealing cars to save his brother.
So in general, car theft is bad, but there's a larger picture. Just like with music. The RIAA is the real enemy...which injustice is greater--stealing music, or their unwatched bullying of the public?
Just how every consumer would believe that a 1.8 Ghz Celeron machine is faster than a 1.0 Ghz G4 machine, everyone thinks that USB2 is faster than FireWire in real-world use. Couldn't be more wrong. Especially now that Firewire 800 is out, Firewire is far superior to USB2...in theory, when compared fairly.
However, because Intel is pushing USB2, and throws it on motherboard chipsets, it *is* faster for HD use (in my experience) than Firewire 400, when Firewire is put on a PCI card. Not a fair comparison....but oh well.
If the RIAA triumphs over these students, and they face punitive damages of such astronomical proportions, I would hope that they'd be put on 24/7 suicide watch.
Faced with a hopeless existence, that no matter how hard they work, they will still be in dept to a large faceless corporation, is a modern-day form of slavery. These guys would never achieve their dreams (assuming their dreams involved some sort of profit), and therefore, it's not hard to think that they might find such a life not worth leading.
I hope so very much that this doesn't occur...but if it were to happen, I would be at the head of the line to go and kick the crap out of those greedy RIAA bastards for causing the death of a poor student.
The parent is correct...legal or not, how can even the RIAA think this is okay? Oh...I forgot, cartels can do whatever they want.
As a final thought....remember in Austin Powers 2 when Dr. Evil asks the President (in the 60s) for $100B? They laughed him under the table. Yet, that's exactly what these people are facing...and its no laughing matter.
Independent tests of Xserve and XServe RAID show that by having independent ATA channels (14 in the RAID), rather than a master/slave configuration, the disk performance of the drives is as good as SCSI, and better than some set-ups. Sorry I don't have a link...on my other computer.
Hope there's not too much "hands-on" experience involved with that.....the scientific method could really start to be a "pain in the ass..."
Hurray for MX series!

Hmmmm.....well it only seems to work once for me....as in, it will "relock" once, but after performing the exploit twice, it is wide-open. D'oh!

Ahh....and of course, Crystal Crazy. This makes me want to go back and install it on an old machine. :)
Could delay release maybe. Get it right WETA! :)
HA! Nice...I may have to use that.

If you use IE, then the terrorists have won.
Oh....I crack myself up :)

FreeBSD doesn't have as much money as Apple does....
I'd take it over Half-Life 2 any day of the week!

And you can get it even cheaper at the Educational Discount. Many schools even offer students the *institutional* pricing, which is awesome.
Guess that counts you out of the "experienced" category, doesn't it? ;)

DOWN with the RIAA.
CmdrTaco and Hemos have merged into a single Slashdot editor, in an effort to reduce duplicate posts.
Clearly, one of them was superior.
Hyuck, hyuck. Merry April 1. :-\

Assuming of course that Taco doesn't forget what he's already posted...
It would be SO easy....
"They aren't bugs...they're features!"
Damn....
Sadly....this is not what I heard....
