Yes they should, and just concentrate on their core competencies OS and Office, rather than dominate the whole software industry.
If I was an MS stockholder I'd be pissed MS are getting 0 or inadequate returns on other ventures. Just because they have a shitload of cash doesn't mean they should try something new. Give it back to shareholders who can decide to invest it wisely and get better returns.
Personally if I was an MS stockholder I would like to see this profit in my hands as a dividend of some sort, where I can decide to invest it myself, rather than let MS invest in non-performing projects (negative NPV) or donate away.
Typical lame anti-MS bashing. No you would actually make them look good as they gain market share. And you would probably 90% of time use the Xbox to play games!
Sounds like a textbook definition. I would think they are in a monopolistic competitive market. Not that they are a monopoly of the market, but such that their product is 'unique', they face similar characteristics to a monopoly.
They've tied in customers and in a sense have a monopoly over those customers.
Yes they have large economic rents (abnormal profits), thats because they have a (unfair?) competitive advantage.
In economic theory, these economic rents do not go on forever. Over the long term competitors will come in and eat into MS profits, until basically they are just making 'normal' profits.
They way its going MS seems likely to have these 'rents' for many-many-many years to come, until 'artificial barriers' are removed. Yes the current desktop OS market is anti-competitive, until we get more regulation in industry.
December 02 gold futures ended up $0.80 to $321.70 an ounce. Weak dollar and Iraq concerns have renewed interest in gold, along with the 50 bp rate cut by the Fed this week.
Gold is in a bull market, the next resistance price level is at $325-$326. After breakthing through this level expect a run towards $330.
