As long as everyone is NAT'ed and firewalled, P2P based technology that requires dirrect comunication will be limited to the geeks
(now at the moment though, anyone not running some form of NAT firewall on a DSL or cable line is a idiot)
But the technoidiots don't know how to port forward so these technologies will not work
At my university we all have our own IP's but All incomeing ports are blocked.........
Before all the trolls start whine about, "why mod an xbox" need i remind you that for well under $200 you have *legaly (sorta) -divx player with composite outputs. and support to stream for every major streaming protacal, from your network hard drives
-mp3 jupebox with shoutcast support (xbox media player) decent ftp server
*illigaly -a nintendo, SNES, GENesis, gameboy advance, N64 emulator (put a couple thosand games) -Can copy games to the hard drive and play them have a nice, cool dedicated linux box running gnetoo, mandrake or one of like 3 decent distros
The hardware is a 733celeron (copermine core, good on power and heat) 64megs of ram shared between apps, and Video ram a modified Geforce 3 core (good enough)
For those of you that whine, "it can't play burned disks" either replace the drive, or buy one that has a samsung drive in it, they play all media just about.
Hey, i allready got like 5 people connected w00t
my aim is daphreak07
my icq is 17654783
EVERYONE put alias's of your file folders in the shared folder
Lets test this out
I'm downloading at 20k some mp3's right now
Working quite well
My only complaint is the compete lack of msging,
But I'm used to WASTE
From what I can tell this is just a striped down
Easier to use WASTE
Personaly I like waste better but thats just me
Hey, i allready got like 5 people connected w00t

I'm downloading at 20k some mp3's right now
Working quite well
Install and connect to 208.191.148.152
[side note, watch my poor dsl line get slash doted]
From what I can see its a W.A.S.T.E like aplication
thats designed for a larger network arcatecture
(automatic key transfer, less privacy and exclusion,
but still better than kazaa)
The icon for the program is a straight rip off of the waste trumpet
For those of you in the know this comes from a book
called the crying of lot 49, its a muted trumpet
That is a sign for a secret postal service.
Here are the "new" features. For itunes, you can now use your aol login, and aol wallet to pay for stuff.
Quicktime now supports the 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards These standards are usefull for Third generation cell phones. They allow transfer of scalled video, sound, text, and just about anything as the yare track based formats.
(anyone know if the itunes breaks the support for mytunes <www.cowpimp.com> the program that lets you download thru mytumes)**
I think he was talking about portable players, there are tons of good computer based players (foobar, winamp, windows media) well maybe not the last one but anyways
I've got some proffesors going over to Iraq to help rebuild the education system, anyone know a good linux build that i could combine with a arabic version of openoffice.........
Please someone post a mirror, everyone at my school
(baylor) uses itunes for music because kazza is banned and they cracked down on waste
(yes they are that evil, but they couldn't prove anything)
I would greatly apreciate a torrent/e2klink/filemirror
I can't connect to gamespy, i think my university might be blocking/ have poisioned the DNS.
anyone know the IP of the server?
also, gamespy dosn't work in BF1942 for server brwoseing, it crashes everyones computer now...
its quite weird
I read this is the wall street journal the other day. A company has got 10,000 people to install monitoring softward on their computers, and they use that to gague internet behavior.
How many pirates would volenteer to have monitoring software on their computer? Heck it was probebly a spyware tool used to check for this... Most of the people only had a few songs that stoped shareing, hardly cutting down on the masses
Anyone have a guide for pentium overclocking?
I run a P4 1.8ghz 400fsb
at 2.2ghz easy
I raised the voltage to 1.65 from 1.5, just air cooling, with a thermaltake volcano (cheap)
the 1.8 was the last of the 400mhz fsbes
after that they went 533, i think mine is just a tad mislabled (i've hit 2.4 stably, and 2.6 I can boot and run a burn in, but its a little hairy)
Now that my university (Baylor, home of the natzi It department) blocks most mp3 shareing apps, and even will hunt you down for useing waste, Itunes is a Godsend
We can stream mp3's over the network from our 5gig+ individual archives to others
I'm sure ITS will put a end to this (port block anybody?) in a matter of time
any other schools noticeing a ton of people showing up in the itunes shared playlist are (as of today i count 10, and only 2 password locked, but all my friends will be on by the end of the week)
Baylor university blocks kazaa (we tried changeing ports, most open proxies are banned) Winmx pulls 1k (we suspect some sort of capping) bittorrent is irrelgular gnutella is flat out blocked gnutella2 works sorta edonkey still works (but we firewalled) and my 2nd nic card is blocked for 4 months running NAT to hook up my xbox (despite the policies never mentioning NAT)
I've been threatend with "I will personaly come up and rip your arm off if you do that again" allready on the issue of NAT
Colleges everwhere are getting draconian we are running a W.A.S.T.E cluster at the moment in my dorm (even the RA's are on it) and have about 1/2 a terabyte, and various people are finding ways to connect (dialup, so they can VPN home and such)
still with filters and invisible rulesets that get you banned for 2 weeks for trying to do something as silly as update a webpage with front page, IT contractors like RESNET have way too much power.
uhh guys, there are kazza clients for mac, sigh macs can do anything my POS xpmachine can do
multi-net http://www.multinetx.com/MnX/
mlmac http://www.abyssoft.com/software/mlmac/
among other programs i know exist, (my father uses some obscure one)
still someone useing wi-fi could have been leaching, My sister uses someone elses wi-fi node in her DC apartment, and even if they did run WEP, i would teach her how to break it in a couple hours so there is nothing they can do there.
(i have agreements with neighbors to leach my bandwidth, so i can claim ISP safe harbor clause if i agree to remove material under the DMCA)
could have been ip hijacking, could have been a open proxie a l33t haxor d00d setup who knows:P
anyone interested in a W.A.S.T.E cluster at baylor university, msg me/post in my journel, icq, mail, msn or whatever me!
Use kazza lite, it has a smut filter, that works well (i just want movies, and music thank you very much) i don't see what hte big deal is, i think you can even password lock it, too
kazaa lite for everyone!
AUGUST 26, 2003 ( COMPUTERWORLD ) - The Web site of Unix vendor The SCO Group Inc. was down from Aug. 22 through Aug. 25, apparently the victim of a possible distributed denial-of-service attack.
A spokesman for Lindon, Utah-based SCO today confirmed the site outage and said the incident is being investigated by the FBI. The site was back up and operating late yesterday.
The incident is apparently the second time this year that the company's Web site has been disrupted by attackers, according to SCO.
SCO has been the target of wide-ranging hostility, especially among members of the the open-source community, since it filed a $1 billion lawsuit in March against IBM that could threaten the future of Linux. SCO alleges that IBM illegally added some of SCO's System V Unix into Linux for its own economic benefit. The suit was later amended and now seeks at least $3 billion in damages. IBM countersued SCO earlier this month.
You guys who think the game cube has kiddy games should rent enternal darkness. The most inovative survival horror genre game ever.
I only made it 1/2 way thru, and one of my friends lost it, but i'm glad. I can laugh at the ring, but that game scared the hell out of me..
The game convinces you littlerly that your going insane...
Someone found a use for Halo?
ohh wait, laughing at it was allready on the list of things to do with it
In other news my xbox with halo (only the multi-player to save space) still only gets used for the ocasional threat of being thrown at someone.
come on people, i hate to start a flame war, but anyone with a decent vid card and some real FPS, like bf1942, will tell you Halo was overhyped. (that and the fanboys aren't very good at any other games)
yes, the 2.4 ghz is getting oversaturated, but the FCC needs to open up more spectrum, as for uses, it will have some, (and yes better than toasters wasteing IP's, just NAT/IPv6 that stuff).
WIll it be overhyped like bluetooth?
yes.
Will it be completely unessesary in some cases (IE, wi-fi in a palm)
Yes.
lets just hope that this protical does checking to see if a channel is in use (like wi-fi) and not act like bluethooth's channel hopping spred spectrum stuff

Its not a viable buisness model though,
Apple openly admits they make no profit from Itunes, and if they ever will it will be tiny.
Its just a marketing ploy to sell more IPODS (my 15 gig sitting on my desk, is the envey of everyone in the dorm)
70cents goes dirrect to the record company after a sale, the reset is split between the artist, and apple wich then has to pay for
1. marketing
2. bandwidth
3. Infastrcture
4. genral staff
pennies a transaction isn't enough to support such a buisness unless its on the scale of credit card transactions.

Waste is good for small groups but because of its mesh style, and encryted network, its really only necessary on a RIAA/MPAA partroled campus.
DC's central server requires minimum shareing sizes (normaly like 50gigs or something huge)
and can handle a ton of people
i'm leaveing for Baylor in a month, anyone going there want to start a waste/DC network or know of any existing ones? (aim, msn or icq me)
i also have friends at A&M, i've heard they run some very large campus wide systems on teh LAN because of very low bandwidth caps per day.
