Actually I was pondering this once. Me and my friend went to a public auction and bought a box of random junk for like 5 bucks right. In this box is a 8500v Pulse transformer. What it's for is finding the break in a dead line underground. It pulses the power and your little detector will beep till the break in the line is found.
Well... I wonder what would happen if I connected it to a cable system or even a phone system;)
What kinda protection do those lines offer to stupid amounts of power going through them. You could take out a small block with one of those 8500v machines.
I managed to get lucky and my ICQ number is 26262929 (add me if you want I guess I'll talk...) ive not really used ICQ for anything other then to idle on in years. People stopped using it back in 1998 when it got REALLY bloaty. I remember running it on my PII 350 (at the time a power machine) and it was slow as cheese. It had so many features and stuff but I guess there has to be a happy medium. The one thing I miss is the ytalk style chat where you can see as people type.
Ah the days... giver if you want to and add me to ICQ if you wish.
What made the numbers sane on ICQ is the amazing search it used to have (which also caused alot of IM spam)
You guys have no clue how cool ipv6 is eh. I recently got a Linksys WRT54Gs (v4) and installed a opensource firmware dd-wrt. Reading up I found out it supports ipv6 -> ipv4. I installed it and got it all working going "oh shit the clients are going to be hard to setup".
Windows: ipv6 install
Linux: modprobe ipv6
Boom... done... all my windows and linux machines in the house now have there OWN ipv6 address and it automaticly works and everything. It's crazy plus my tunnel provider he.net gave me 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 (18 Quintillion) IP's to mess around with. Im sorry but I think it's frickin cool. You have to change providers fine... you hop on there network... boom you get a brand new ipv6 address.
Im running debian... I know it's similar but in debian it's "dpkg-reconfigure packagename" to get the nice lovely configuration screen. This is handy for all programs that you use apt-get or dpkg to install.
Of course not... EFnet is a huge IRC network. I don't think even the power of slashdot could hurt it. Or all the questions and mettings on even a smaller network like slashdots sister network slashnet and the channels will get big but I don't think "slashdotted". Maybe a shitty network like my own would get killed but I don't think a big network like EFnet. There is only about 80,000 people on EFnet now. Back in 1999 I remember EFnet having over 100,000 people.
I remember DALnet even having more then that. But times have changed... my god im getting old
I can't seem to find a copy of that checkinstall program. The website seems to be down as of 1:06AM EST time. Would someone have a copy (source) that I could maybe have. It looks like a nice program to keep my self compiled programs as nice little.debs.
Unless someone knows of a.deb of checkinstall the source would be just as nice.
I picked up a Mistubishi Diamondtron 19" Flat CRT (based off of sonys trintron design) and im more then happy with it. Got it for 119 bucks used at some chinese computer store and I couldn't be happier with it. Although I wasn't sure on the Aperture Grille technology. I get my monitor and it has 2 fine lines going through it on 1/4 of the way down and up. After reading I find it's because the screen is too flat (no complains here tho) after a little while you get used to it. Plus the monitor has FPM mode which brightens the brights and darkens the dark (good for games and movies) but not very nice for just normal computing because it's so bright that it makes you dizzy.
Lots of other people borrowed sonys trintron technology. So there is alot of selection out there. Don't just look at Sony's if you want a good deal. Oh yeah and don't expect it to be light. My 19" CRT is over 60lbs but it's worth it if you want a nice picture at any resolution.
I got my Dual Pentium Pro running my webserver / Mailserver / DNS server / FTP server / SSH server / pop3 and imap / an IRCD / and a ton of other stuff. It also downloads all my torrents (usually 3 at a time constantly). It runs a bot which logs a IRC channel and computes the stats in the morning. It captures SNMP data from my cable modem and router and prolly a ton of other little things which I won't bother to mention.
My pentium pro machine has to be the hardest working machine in my house. Averaging a 1.0 - 2.0 load, the heat that comes out of this thing is just amazing tho. What I did to combat that is pickup some cheap Vantec Duron Fans/Heatsinks (since you can't buy just the fan) and toss the heatsinks and put the fans on the chip. I find that the PPRo will melt a stock Pentium (classic) fan in a matter of weeks. The cool thing about the ppro is that it will shut off it's chip if it overheats. I had one of those laser temp things and from what the heatsink was showing was ~ 116c before it totally crashed and died. Of course a simple reboot and a fan solved this.
Im still trying to find more things to fetch info off of and do. I have a 56k External USR Modem connected to it so my next project will probably be to get 123-4567@fax.solosoft.org to fax an email to a phone number.
My workaround for that is to not buy movies anymore. They want to make it inconvienent for me to pass through the crap before my movie that's too bad. Now I simply copy my movies or download them off the internet. I might loose out on some packaging and some crappy extra features / advertisements. I'll live with the loss untill DVD-9's come out for cheap. Then it's full 100% copy time, im guessing the MPAA doesn't want those DVD-9's to be cheap ? Most DVD burners come with the ablitity to burn dual layer disks but the media is still mind numbingly expensive.
I have a 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 91 and I noticed that the fonts look alot nicer if you mess around with The Cleartype Powertoy". It lets you set your cleartype fonts to what your screen needs. Im on a CRT and I noticed that my fonts where considerably easier to read.
Yeah but you lost out on that 386 enhanced mode. What was the 386 enhanced mode. I remember seeing it on only 386's but never on 286's. I could boot up my Windows 3.1 Laptop and find out I guess but im sure someone here could spend a second and answer that for me.
Umm... Windows XP requires 128mb of RAM (correct me if im wrong) to run because I remember trying to install it on a 166MMX with 64mb of RAM and it would not install. I upgraded it to 128mb of RAM and it installed nicely. Strangely enough it actually ran very decently.
Windows ME needed a 166MMX to install unless you put some command line arguements to stop the detection.
Windows 2000 can run on 32mb of RAM but if you have anything open other then the basic explorer it runs like cheese. Very groggy and it chews up the swap like crazy. 64mb of RAM with WIndows 2000 isn't too bad tho.
Windows XP with a gb of RAM is still not enough in my terms. I manage to swap out all the time but that's when im doing stupid things like seeing how much pi my computer can compute and shit.
Windows ME was like a 9x version of Windows 2000. It had the same icon set as Windows 2000 and actually had more "features". I remember running Windows ME on my PII 350 and I had not one problem with it. It would boot up to full load in like 20 seconds. Everything was snappy and it had alot of nifty things such as the new version of Media Player.
Am I the only person who didn't find Windows ME to suck ?
Microsoft was going to come out with Windows Tiger> which was actually another 9x OS. Im guessing they got over it and released Windows Neptune which was like a "consumer version of Windows 2000". But that became Windows Whistler or as we know Windows XP.
You know what all this sidebar stuff reminds me of, my days using Windowmaker on linux debian. When I used linux on my desktop I used windowmaker because of the nifty dockbar. It told me everything from how much my CPU is being used to who's on what port on my computer.
Here is one out of 100 some snapshots ive taken out of linux. I have all my snapshots from my first time using linux to now. I find it kind of intresting on how I started off with a stock desktop to how customized and modified my desktop really got.
If your intrested or just want to watch my 2x 200MHz PPRo melt you can check them all out at Here.
Oh well atleast I know when all the longhorn kiddies go "look at my l337z0r sidebar" I can go "well in 1998 I had a sidebar too":)
Noper, I have the same card sitting beside me. Well the box anywho, Linux only supported 1/2 of the card (literally (1 166MHz chip and 1 32mb RAM Module))and Windows XP and 98 support 100% of the card. If you flash the card it would work on a Mac also. Sadly tho that is not the last card from 3Dfx.
The Voodoo 5 6000 is the last production card according to this page. The problem with these voodoos tho, they where too frickin expensive to fight with nvidia's GeForce. Oh well, nice to know there is still someone with a voodoo card.
I own a Canopus 3Dfx Voodoo 1 (6mb RAM) and a 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500
Oh ? I got OS X working on my Athlon64 3000+ (winchester)
Here is a screenshot. Where do you see SSE3 ? Oviously I used vmware but I got it running took that snapshot then deleted it. Not worth my time considering it supports very little of my hardware.
Have you tried Bug Me Not. It's a firefox extension.
Just right click on the "Signup" thing and click "bugmenot" and it goes on the internet and finds you a login. It also works for alot of other sites out there.
what ? your telling me that the GTA3 series did not sell playstations ? I remember when GTA3 came out, I knew so many people getting a PS2 just for that game. Same with Halo, these are games that sell consoles.
In the gamecube case it's the Mario / Zelda games which really push the GC's sales. People don't buy consoles for power... they get them for games. Whichever one has the best games get's the best sales.
I will never ever ever buy a gamecube. One reason, expansion. They got xbox's doing media centers. Linux on the PS2. The Gamecube has some silly joke of a hack to get it to run "homemade" software.
But really it's the games. You name me some NON Zelda or Mario games that debuted on the GC. Xbox has it's Halo, PS2 has it's GTA series. Game Cube has Mario... Mario's fun and all don't kid me wrong. I had a blast in SMB3, but please. Get some kickass games on that system, it'll sell like hotcakes.
I am not really a big fan of the pentium pro. It is an amazing chip but man it runs hot.
I have a Dual Pentium Pro sitting beside my desk and this thing puts off more heat then my Athlon64 3000+. I had to take off the stock fans (because they melted) and put on 2 Vantec 5000RPM duron fans. Now the thing is extreamly noisey and hot:( . The Pentium Pro is an awsome chip just it runs too frickin hot. (btw, if you stop the fans with your finger and put a laser sensor on the heatsink, within 5 seconds it will hit 80c. Once it hits a little over 80c the chip crashes. Im not sure if it's a hardware crash (because of the heat) or the chip shuts it's self off. If you know anything more about this chip please tell:).
Actually I was pondering this once. Me and my friend went to a public auction and bought a box of random junk for like 5 bucks right. In this box is a 8500v Pulse transformer.
