I have a AMD 64 3000+ (939) and I got bored in speedfan and killed EVERY fan on the computer and played some music in Fruty Loops and encoded a DVD (bring it down to 4.7gb) in nero. I had the fan off for 25 minutes and the chip did not go above 55c. With cool'n'quiet and the thing idle the fan is not even needed.
Intel still hasn't solved the heat issue yet on those chips. The Dual 200MHz PPro I got in my room is retarded on the amount of heat it puts out. I don't even want to imagine a prescott.
I have to keep the celing fan on full speed and the window and door open at all times or it will nuke me. The only solution for apple if it where to use x86 is that new Pentium M. But if apple goes X86, will they release OS X for the x86 ? or will it simply be a hack to get it to run ?. How will apple keep hold on the OS X market if they move to a chip everyone is using for there PC. Imagine actually running Mac Software on your PC. Why would people buy overpriced mac's when they could build a barebone PC and a probably warezed version of OS X and be able to run PC apps AND mac apps.
So how is apple to keep a lock on there stuff like they do now ? How much longer before you see "Apple Clones" again ?
Just some ideas:)
Oh yeah, and the Pentium II was actually a downslide from the Pentium Pro in some aspects. The PPro had faster cache (and more of it on some models). The only thing I know on the PII which is better is MMX and the clock speed.
The one thing that I do like about new CRT's is the option for the "Flatscreen". I have a Flatscreen 17" CRT and a "curved" screen CRT and I notice the difference right away.
The Flatscreen monitor has a much more "square" picture and has that anti-reflection crap on it. The only downside to that anti-reflection crap is you can't touch it or else you get bigtime smudging.
The Curved screen one makes images almost look "bent". Not that they are just it doesn't have the same even feel as this flatscreen.
The only time an LCD is handy in my opinion is for portablitiy or your stuck with a small area / desk. Other then that CRT all the way.
I have a 3DFX Voodoo 5 5500. This card has SLI that is unsupported by linux. You think that it would be possible to tap into the other 32mb of my card to actually get this to work. Have a 32mb swap or somthing. Since there is no SLI support for this card it's really only a Voodoo4 with another chip and some more RAM on it. (Since there is 2 32mb RAM Modules on the card and 2 166MHz chips on it.
This program is simply amazing. It will "lock" your partition but let things save settings or users "think they broke" the drive. Using Deep Freeze you can delete the entire HDD and windows actually thinks you did then simply reboot and it's fixed. So what you do is simply install all the shit you need too then boom. When your using it... all the spyware / garbage that goes on the computer gets wiped out with a click of the reboot button.
No clue how this works tho... im sure someone here has some insight on it ?
What ever happened to all those cool releases by CLASS and all them. They always had the coolest installers with the old commodore music playing and sometimes some sort of visual aid (I remember one game with some sort of space stuff coming towards you).
I like those releases... it's nifty to see what one group does for free just to spite the companys.
Well... actually he doesn't use wifi. He buried some CAT5 Cable underground and brought it into his neighbours house. It's easier for them to share files / printer / internet and saves on costs of the bill. He splits the bill in half making his internet cost 20 bucks a month. It surely is worth it considering the only time they "allot" for heavy bandwidth usage is in the night. That's the best time anywho since cranking the line won't interupt your sleeping. If my neighbour wanted to do that I would for sure. I have 5.12mbit down and 0.55mbit up. That's plenty of bandwidth for more then 2 computers.
You could run 5 computers with 1mbit of constant bandwidth allocated to them. Considering most web usage won't even go near 1mbit the only time you need to worry about it is when you download.
He is with DSL and I find DSL in this town "lossy" so when your neighbour or even yourself is downloading a torrent or somthing at full speed the internet becomes so bogged down sites time out. I have cable and I can download 5 torrents on EACH computer and still have a semi decent internet experience. I guess it's just his line or by chance mines quicker.
Anywho... now that im quickly offtopic i'll stop my rant / speech / whatever
You can't RESELL the bandwidth. But you can "share" it. My friend does this and he called bell sympatico to make sure it's ligit. As long as he is not PROFITING from it then it's alright. Your just splitting the line. But if your selling the line for more then what you pay. Then you have some issues.
My Pentium Pro 200MHz (Dual). It has provided me with nothing but good computing. For jokes I put in a bit of money and modded it up. It primarly sits in my room and computes things or acts as my media player.
I have some pictures of it too (They are 4.3 megapixel pictures)
If I really wanted too I could put in PII Overdrives in here and have a PII 333MHz with 66MHz Bus and Full speed L2 Cache. For now this will let me slashdot, IRC and listen to tunes.
Oh yeah it hosts www.solosoft.org pretty good too. The only issue I have with it is the extreme heat it pushes out. That was solved with some fans, the noise was solved by a hardcano 9 (OEM) in which I can independantly control the fans and turn them down when im in the room and don't feel like hearing it.
I like to download the TV shows I am never home to watch on TV. It's like having a Tivo on my home PC plus the commercials are out.
Also some of the time you get the show a little bit earlier because the people who get the TV snag it off the feed to the broadcast station (sometimes). It's usually only a day ahead and it's only some shows but it's frickin cool spoiling someone favorite show.
Im still one of the suckers who is running a 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 PCI on my Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz.
The card is simply perfect for what I do with it but I do wish that the SLI would of been completed for this card so it's not just seen as a 32mb Voodoo 4 with 1 166MHz GPU but a Voodoo 5 with 64mb of RAM and 2 166MHz GPU. Plus the AA would look pretty I bet on some games and such.
Oh well, I spent some extensive time reading on the internet and alot of people took note that this card's linux drivers will never be finished.
Quick Question tho: Does nvidia's new SLI use the same technology as 3Dfx's. I remember reading this somewhere that they where going to use the same SLI as the voodoo 5 (nvidia did buy out 3Dfx's technology).
The problem with Intel changing the way CPU's work is compatablitity. On a Intel or AMD chip you can still run x86 games from the 8086 days.
All the newer CPU's are is an overclocked 386 with some fancys added (MMX and SSE for example). If Intel or AMD where to come out with a totally new architecture what would you do with 99.99% of the code that is out there. You would need to re-write every piece of software out there (unless you did emulation which would totally break the point of "starting from scratch").
The new AMD 64bit CPU's are a good start to try to "push" away from the x86 market but I think x86 is fit to stay for ALONG time.

It's got 2 6gb HDD's (Maxtor and IBM). A 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, SB 16 Digital 4.1 and a Network card.
I mostly use it in my room for most forms of media (movies, music, internet browsing). It works perfectly for the price I payed for it (50 bucks Canadian).
Although it's not the most practical machine for games and such it does a good job at doing "normal" work here and there.
I actually modded it up and made a window and put in some glow fans and a Hardcano 9 inside of it for jokes. Even when I do push it down to a dedicated server i'll leave in some of the mods just so my server "glows".
Bell Sympatico did have a limit but removed it. They rased the prices and put a limit. I guess down south where Rogers is didn't have the cap so people ran away from the DSL esp since they where going to charge 8 dollars a gig after your 10 gigs up or down.
I left them because of that and went to cable and could never be happyer.
Pfft... I live in Northern Ontario... about a 4 hour drive north of toronto. This town has many many ISP's. The one I use is Persona Communications, I have the "normal" cable edition and I get ~5mbit down and 0.55mbit up (600k/s on a good night and 60k/s send). Even the DSL is really quick here. Bell Sympatico DSL is 3mbits down and 600kbits up. This is all for about 40 bucks canadian. Although it's not as cheap as some of those asian countrys it sure is cheaper then comcast. It just matters the city your in I guess on the speed of the internet. Most of you americans seem to have all big companys. So even if the citys network is new they will still limit you to the fastest speed they can average around the country.
Anywho... all I know is canada might not have much... but we know how do to beer , smokes and internet.
Wow ... that idea looks like my case (not finished yet) but that's sort of the idea ... fancy clear case with as many lights as I can fit in there.

... but working on it slowly
What's the matter with being scared of the dark
Oh you might want a Link to the page.
Nothing too fancy yet

Those AMD 64's are awsome for cooling
Oh yeah, all stock cooling from AMD

I don't know but ive seen rumors all the time about Longhorn coming out 64bit. If Windows XP is coming out 64bit next month will longhorn.
:)
Don't want this 64bit chip to goto waste
The 3Dfx Voodoo 5 has SLI also. Somthing in which I wish linux would support but probably won't :(
;-)
Meaning this nice big power hogging card is simply a overglorified Voodoo4
If anyones bored tonite they could write some linux Voodoo 5 SLI drivers
I have a 3DFX Voodoo 5 5500. This card has SLI that is unsupported by linux. You think that it would be possible to tap into the other 32mb of my card to actually get this to work. Anyone got a link to download it ? I don't feel like signing up and such.
Yes they do. I am a canadian and when I goto http://www.google.com. It takes me to http://www.google.ca.
I never notice it. The web is the web no matter what "google" you search from. (Unless of course you set it to search in that country.
they didn't even change the file names. When it crashed for me it said "Giantsomthing.exe" crashed".
Give them time

:D or CPU's in that matter
I was surprised that it only took 4 days but oh well guess I got a better CPU then you
Well ... it's still considered the "North" and is the biggest city there.
It's Sudbury
Bell Sympatico did have a limit but removed it. They rased the prices and put a limit. I guess down south where Rogers is didn't have the cap so people ran away from the DSL esp since they where going to charge 8 dollars a gig after your 10 gigs up or down.
