You know what made ICQ ? The search. ICQ has / had an AMAZING search. You wanted to find someone all you had to do is look. There e-mail name etc etc. I think it's the spam that hit people HARD. I remember connecting and constantly getting those "forward this to everyone thing" and later on even like spam spam. "Click here for hot girls" etc etc.
Your comment on not remembering ICQ is quite strange. EVERY time I bring up ICQ everyone remembers there number. I know mine is 26262929 (lucked out on that one). It's a simple string of numbers that most people can remember.
By the time ICQ had server side lists, and supported firewalls as mentioned above. MSN and AIM kicked in.
I know in norhtern ontario the thing to use is MSN. Everyone and there dog has a MSN account and uses it to chat. I know noone that I physicaly meet who use AIM or ICQ or even yahoo in that matter.
Most of the convienece is hotmail. Most people and there dog have a hotmail account. Why not simply sign in with MSN and boom your hotmail is all nice and simple with a messaging app.
Don't want to have a hotmail account. Click Here and simply add your e-mail address (They just simply mail you a URL to click). Then sign onto MSN with your new mail address.
Yahoo I find isn't a very nice network to talk with. It's too bloated on the windows end and looks to be a haven for "picking up". If you want a laugh go on one of the romance channels and say your 19/F/Wherever and you get literally enough msg's for yahoo to boot you off. AIM is... AIM it seems popular in the US but I don't know since im canadian.
Actually my dad works as a HVAC salesman. The one thing you SHOULD do when your done using your Central AC is leave the fan running. If you let those coils "drip dry" your going to end up with mold in there. Which can make you and your family very sick. People can come in our house with the AC on and normally are quite annoyed by AC and have no problem.
Just a little tip:) Leave the fan running for ~ 20 - 30 minutes afterwords so the coil can dry. Also it helps circulate the air in the house too (moving all the cold AC air out of the vents and such).
The one game which revolutionized the dreamcast was "Sonic Adventures 2". I remember seeing that on commercials and how AWSOME it looked. You have to remember all most of us was used to seeing is N64 games (blocky little polygons) and Playstation 1 (kinda blocky... looked nice but... just not as good). That game ran SO SMOOTH and looked SMOOTH. Very Cartoony but smooth. I believe that was one of the biggest jumps in console games.
You can't tell me you where not impressed from the dreamcasts preformance. It smoked the N64 and PS1 big time.
My Dreamcast will be a loved system for along time (people are still "developing" for it). Which is the only system I ever got and kept. Since unlike the older ones people got like the Genisis and the Ninteno you can't download games off the net for free and play them.
I got a 3Dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI for my Dual PPRo. At the time it was the big card everyone wanted. It eventually got owned by the GeForce. (ironic as nvidia beat out the voodoo they bought out the company too). 3Dfx Never updated there technology. It was just "slap more CPU's" on the board. Which in theroy works. Then you got the problem with a super huge power guzzling card. I got a quick question tho and maybe someone here can help me with it. The question is: will linux ever support the other 50% of my card. Right now X see's my card as a 3Dfx Voodoo 4 with 32mb of Onboard memory and one chip. I was wondering if any of you slashdotters actually got this card to work.
What im looking for is maybe full Voodoo 5 support (so it supports both chips in openGL and glide). Also what would be cool is a little program to change settings on the card. This supports AA right on the card and I wouldn't mind seeing that in action. I googled and googled but nothing came up of intrest.
Oh yeah... im running a 200w PSU and I have a Hardcano 9 Fan controller controlling 2 fans (both the nice LED ones) I have a 12v Black Light in my case, 2 HDD's a CD ROM, 2 fans on the CPU's (little P1 fans) and a big fan on the bottom of the PSU. My PSU runs HOT but still works fine. People getting 500w is over rated. I know im working this one WAY too hard but im sure a 350w PSU will do the trick and probably be much much cheaper then a 500w one.
I have one more thing to put on to this machine. 3Dfx Voodoo 5, I got a quick question tho. Does the Voodoo 5 only use the Molex power for the fans or for the operation of the card. I got a temprature sensor and I wouldn't mind slapping the fan controller on the voodoo. (this way I wouldn't need the card rip'rarin all the time) since this machine likes to idle for days and days at a time.
No... I would simply not have what I don't need. I don't need Windows 2000 Pro... I don't need AutoCAD... I don't need alot of things. Actually if I couldn't pirate GNU/Linux has a nice open selection of FREE software.
Nothing... I don't buy software... I don't buy music and I don't buy movies.
Why buy when you can get the same thing for free. 20 bucks a CD is too much, 50 bucks a game is way too much for somthing I'll prolly get over it by the end of the week. Most software (esp for windows) is not worth the price. Im not paying 30 bucks for an IRC client or a rar archiver program.
The one thing I would pay for is a Debian Sarge (when it comes out) CD set. That is one piece of software which is worth it. But the CD set needs to show up in the stores since living in canada makes shipping and exchange rates / duty a bitch.
Unlike what most of you think "Piracy Hurts Sales". No it doesn't, piracy doesn't cost the producer a penny. If you couldn't pirate windows (lets pretend they found a way to make it 100% unpirateable) I bet you so many people would be on the OEM version of Windows 98 they got with there Compaq. The one thing piracy does is lets people get programs they would never ever buy/use. Look at AutoCAD. How many people actually know how to use AutoCAD. Most people download it since it's a top end "Professional" Program. "Oh look friend I got the new AutoCAD 2005, it's worth 2000 bucks US". Really most people could live with not updating things all the time. Without piracy my Family's Window's machine would prolly be on Windows 98. I would of never updated the RAM... or the HDD or the video card. Why ? Windows 98 doesn't need very much of that.
Yeah... I do like to pirate and I refuse to buy software and other forms of media. Doesn't mean it's a loss to me. Since if I couldn't pirate it I wouldn't use it. So what is there to lose ? Why do you care if im using Windows 2000 Pro compared to Windows 98 ? I would of never purchased Windows 2000 Pro ? What loss does Microsoft have from me using it ?. Support ? (ive never asked them for anything) Bandwidth ? (I got it through an alternate source). If anything... im helping microsoft out by using there OS and promoting it. "Oh Windows 2000 is nifty you should check it out".
Think about it tho... really... what loss is it to ID if I play Doom3 once and get over it. I would of never bought it. I don't play games much (the last game I played was starcraft and bought that for 5 bucks at a yard sale). I don't plan on playing it online... it won't cost them bandwidth... I'll finish it before it's first update. I won't eat there bandwidth to cost them money. Thus... me stealing it take absolutely 0 pennys out of there pocket.
I got the game... there is already a Keygen and a No CD exe file out there. There has been for about a week now.
As for the game... one word... AMAZING
Not somthing I would buy tho since I only want to play it on single player once... same with most FPS's they just don't hold that "fun factor" as with most games
If your a fan of one fucked up scary amazing looking game this is the one for you
Those games are also rated. They do rate games for a reason. If mom and dad go buy there kid some M rated game and he's like 8 that's THERE PROBLEM. Not the game maker or the rating people.
- Expensive
- Intergrated Cache = Expensive Updating
- Too Fucking Hot (I run a Dual PPro and I can't keep this fucker cool even with 5 80mm Case Fans)
Although it did have some good things
- Intergrated Cache = Speedy
- 60 - 66MHz Bus
- Full Speed Bus (unlike the PII)
- Able to run the PII Overdrive and 533MHz Celery's if you got the kit
- Able to run Dual CPU and Quad CPU easy
There is prolly more reasons... but this is what I know from reading various sources
Last time I checked... Pent = 5... ium (to add a coolness to it) means 586... since the last was a 486 (which would be called a Quadium if they used the same naming scheme). Technically anything over a PPro would be a Sexium... I guess the name pentium stuck tho. You talk with most people they go "oh my computer is a Pentium I,II,III,IV" etc etc
I got no proof that this is really why... but it kinda makes sense in a way.
Bell Canada already has this (I got one of there fancy phones). It has a "Online Phonebook", right on the phone and it does some kind of data / voice call. You have the ability to "say" the stuff you want from it "spell" and type on the keyboard.
The Future is near just we need better voice software. It's still in my opinion sucking. I tried some of those programs out and never had any luck with them. I speak a clean english too. You need to spend more time watching how you speak then it is for you to type it out.
I never use that phone book cause it's slow and crappy. But you know what it's there and does work.
The new client has ads. Just less "In your face ones". I believe an example is that bar on the bottom. It can expand and "offer" you services. Also when you use the chat (prolly the most popular part of yahoo). Your forced to watch a large banner ad.
I still don't get these guys. It's not like Gaim and trillian use there webcam and voice (which use the most bandwidth and prolly cost the most to upkeep). All they use is the text part which is really HOW much bandwidth.
I remember playing that game on my old P133 with a S3 Trio (2mb) and a Canopus Pure 3D LX (voodoo 1) card. The card had 6mb of memory. 4mb for Buffer and 2mb for Textures. I remember seeing the game all smoothed out and spead up from the voodoo. Me and my friends would crank the shit outa the sound (we had going in the stereo) and play that game for hours. It was the first game I saw which was all smoothed out and didn't look like a big blockey world. Im sure other people noticed the niceness and prolly went and picked up a 3Dfx card for that. I know I sure did.
wow... I didn't know windows XP was that easy to get into. Ive always just installed my windows and updated it when it was convienent for me. I never got smoked by anything.
Is the internet that bad now.
oh well... I remember using Windows ME as my NAT box with ICS (it was cheap and a easy way to get some computers I was fixing on the internet.
fuck... id hate to be a fucker who leaves his machine with no protection on the internet.

Why have a machine idle ? Mas well have it do somthing. I have 5 fans in there and it keeps cool enough.
Exactly. My Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz Machine is perfect for what I need to do. Yet people tell me all the time that I need to update. I tell them why ?. There answer is always "So you can play games". Here is the thing, the only games I play is like little ones like Pingus and sometimes some small java/flash games.
People don't understand that you don't need a top of the line computer to do simple tasks. Maybe if they removed some of the bloaty spyware bogging down there computer it wouldn't run like a 386.
I have a Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz Computer. It has a 32mb GeForce 2MX 400 in it (the card is broken so the nvidia drivers won't work. I did manage to get it to work by underclocking it 10MHz and only using the nv drivers provided by X. It seems to work well now). It has 192mb of RAM and a 17" Monitor. Would one of those cards be able to work quickly and well... fast enough to watch full screen TV. Since my TV is only a small 13 inch I want to use my computer to watch it since the screen is bigger (and nicer).
So could I watch full screen tv smoothly... or is it outa the option for my old PPro ?

What's ironic is my mom doesn't like IE nither now. She was looking for a crack for one of her games she plays (Just her little flash/java games). She comes upto me and goes "Why does IE keep downloading all this spyware".
Im like here... use this browser
I installed Mozilla Firefox with a nice pretty theme and now she won't go back. She likes tabbed browsing and the point it just works.
Kinda nifty how OSS software is getting into the hands of "average joe".
I know what you mean Solosoft my main desktop in my room is a Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz. I have never seen a little 200MHz desktop push out so much heat in my life.
I have 2 200MHz Pentium Pro's running at 200MHz. I have 5 fans total inside of the case (large tower). The second leading heat source is the PSU. That thing must be running near full power since it's 250w and im running 1 120mm fan , 4 80mm fans (2 of them the cool blue light ones). 2 HDD's a GeForce 2MX 400 Fan and whatever else little gizmos are running in there.
If I close my door and my window and leave for about an hour, my room is unbearably hot. I open my door and you can feel the heat pushing out into the rest of the house.
This nifty idea of cooling down some of the computer components sounds like a good idea.
It is kinda nice in the winter tho. I live in northern ontario and I can keep my window open any time and my room still remain a cozy ~ 20c.
Anyone else got any cool "computer" furnace stories:) im sure some people have it worse then me.
