I think you hit the nail on the head. I am seeing a lot of slashdot articles and discussion about "Oh my god, look how small it is! People will line up to buy this!", but for a windows user my entire life like myself my thought was "I've heard so much about OSX I'd like to give it a whirl, now I can finally afford a machine to run it." OSX is by no means perfect, there are some annoyances, but I am so much happier with my new mac mini than my windows box. So much so that I haven't booted my windows box since the day I got my mini.

And to anyone else in my same position who hasn't even tried OSX, the learning curve is surprisingly small. I recommend David Pogue's OSX: The Missing Manual Book which helped translate windows fuctionality to the mac equivalants. Also check out The Top 100 OSX Applications, it has helped me determine what the mac equivalant of my favorite windows software is.

    Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc

    Definition:

The name in Latin means "after this therefore because of this".
This describes the fallacy. An author commits the fallacy when
it is assumed that because one thing follows another that the
one thing was caused by the other.

    Examples:

    (i) Immigration to Alberta from Ontario increased. Soon
after, the welfare rolls increased. Therefore, the increased
immigration caused the increased welfare rolls.

(ii) I took EZ-No-Cold, and two days later, my cold
    disappeared.

    Proof:

Show that the correlation is coincidental by showing that: (i)
the effect would have occurred even if the cause did not
occur, or (ii) that the effect was caused by something other
    than the suggested cause.

Since Family Guy is going to start running long anticipated new episodes of a good show that really didn't grab an audience the first time around, they ran an old episode with a bare butt in it so they could pixelate the cartoon butt to create a little stir - the reprecussions of the Janet Jackson thing is still daily newspaper fodder. That hopefully (and did) grabbed a few headlines in the media like "Family Guy Pixelates Butt Due to FCC Concerns". What do you think the chances of Family Guy being mentioned around the water cooler had Fox not pixelated the character's ass? It created more awareness of the show and hopefully will score a bigger share of the Nielsen giving the show a running start on it's second lease on life. Nothing gets people to watch tv more than sex and controversy. Democrats and Republicans are planning to restore the draft with House Resolution 162 in the House of Representatives

Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats will bring back the draft. In fact, that bill was killed weeks ago. The Republicans from the Prez on down have said there will be no draft, and even though the Democrats sponsored the draft bill in the House, they weren't really serious about it - it was just used as a scare tactic / wedge issue.

So either Badnarick is either ignorant, or just thinks young people are so stupid that you can just scare them into voting for you. MTV does the same thing with Rock the Vote. Check it out - as we've seen before, neither party is bringing back the draft but MTV still hosts this page.

Perhaps if Badnarick starts treating the "Dot Net" age group like the intelligent, informed people that we are instead of all the MTV-esque scare-mongering, maybe we might vote for him.

  22. Bullshit on Electoral College Abolition Amendment and IRV Bill · · Score: 4, Insightful

OK let me break this down for you....

Senate - each state gets two Senators, Senators are the STATE's representative's, not the people of the states - that's the house. So, each state gets an equal 2% respresentation of the entire Senate.

House - OK, now the House does represent the people broken up into little districts. But how on god's green earth can you say that the House gives larger representation to smaller populations? I live in Delaware, we have one Representative. That means 1 vote out of 435 in the House. California on the other hand has 56 Representatives. If it were just between us two states, California would win every time. And furthermore, Resprentatives are awarded per population (I don't have the numbers offhand, but it's somewhere around a million citizens per Representative). So as populations change, so does representation.

President - Are you kidding me? Like an earlier post said, the founding fathers were not stupid. The electoral college is in place to even things out. My home state of Delaware has a population of slightly over a million people. We're small. Don't blink or you'll miss us. The point is, the electoral college ensures that the President is elected by the States - as in President of the United STATES (not President of the Popular Vote). If the Prez was elected by the popular vote, then the Candidates would be in California, Texas, and New York for the duration of the campaign and would never set foot in Delaware, Rhode Island, Wyoming, Vermont, et al. However, as it stands, because of the electoral college, both Bush and Kerry have made multiple stops to this little tiny dot on the map called Delaware. We only have slightly over a million people, but the STATE has 3 electoral votes so while the candidates spend most of their time in the states with the huge populations, tiny states like ours don't get a lot of attention, but the electoral college makes sure we're not forgotten.

I'm so happy with xm that I'm going to get a head unit in my truck too. It's only like $6/month for an additional radio if you have one already, so the unit is cool because you can listen to tons of new music commercial free on your computer, but don't just get it because of the TimeTrax software because you probably won't use it for mp3's - you'll just get hooked on XM.

  24. RTFHB on Networks Ignore 3rd Party Candidates · · Score: 2, Informative

You gotta read the flippin' history book...

You said our Electoral system is built for two parties, but that is only half correct. While it's true only major parties end up running against each other, Democrats and Republicans are not the only parties to ever win the election.

We have had an Independent President (George Washington). We have had Democratic-Republicans (Thomas Jefferson). We have had a Federalist Party President (John Adams). We've had 6 Whig Party Presidents (the eternal trivia question himself William Henry Harrison was a Whig). We've had many Republican Presidents along with many Democratic Presidents (you already know many of these). And just over a decade ago, Ross Perot from the Reform Party got a hell of a lot of the popular vote for a 3rd party.

The Democratic and Republican parties both absorbed a few of the ideas of the Reform party and the voter base followed. 3rd parties usually are a check against the major parties when the electorate gets upset when both parties have gone too far outside the mainstream. Like the Reform party, the 3rd party's platform is absorbed by the major parties until it gets back into 'check'. So I'd say as a matter of course, voting for a 3rd party is not "throwing your vote away" is not necessarily true - especially if you are politically disaffected. It can sway the major parties to get back in line with your beliefs if enough people feel the same way.

So while a predominantly 2 party system may seem flawed, in reality they take up many of the ideas of the 3rd parties and as such, none really get a foothold. Is this imperfect? Sure, but while having a candidate only "slightly" representing a viewpoint held by a small minorty of voters, what would be even more flawed would be to have the general population represented by a 3rd party candidate whose main platform was an issue held to be important by an extreme minority of voters.

This type of representive democracy is flawed - there will never be a perfect system, but it's a hell of a lot better than anything else out there.

    Cheers.
