You have to use a real email address because they will send you a registration code to use for Opera 8. It will register it as the full ad-free version. Enjoy!

This word, I do not think it means what you think it means. Try here. I know here at slashdot you can say whatever the hell you want and it'll get modded up if it's inflammatory enough, but please don't add to ignorance.

Don't like Verizon's service? Think their CEO is a jackass? Their commercials annoy the hell out of you? DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM VERIZON!!!!!!! See, you've just voted with your wallet, that's the most powerful vote you have. They listen to that.
  6. Subscription price is wrong on WSJ's Online Subscriptions Outperform Print · · Score: 3, Informative

Online subscribers pay $84/year, whereas print subscribers are still paying $356

The WSJ only costs you $356 if you buy it from the newstand every day. Don't do that. In fact, you can get a year of the print AND online versions for only slightly more than the online versions. Check here for a $99/year deal. (referral-free link).

What I like about the WSJ is that, unlike in most papers where fact and opinion are combined through out all the news articles, the WSJ is pretty much straight facts in the articles and the opinions are relegated to the Opinion section. Don't get me wrong, I like reading the Opinion section but when it comes to news reporting, just the facts ma'am!

  7. two different types of papers on WSJ's Online Subscriptions Outperform Print · · Score: 1

The reason the WSJ can charge so much for their paper and charge people for online content is because the vast majority of the subscribers are able to deduct the price from their taxes as a business expense.

As a new mac user that just recently switched from the windows world, I have a question for the mac people....

It's well settled in the windows world that an upgrade of the os is only done as a last resort - the first option is backing up, doing a clean install, then importing all your data. Is the same true for OSX, or will just upgrading tiger be the same as a clean install?

I finally have everything tweaked on my mini and would hate to have to reinstall all my apps etc. TIA.

I ordered a mini last friday, so I just called and spoke to the Apple CSR. She said any mac purchased before the announcement won't ship with Tiger and she told me about the up to date program ($9.95) upgrade. HOWEVER, it did not take any arm twisting to get her to take $10 off the purchase price of the mini so it's like I'm getting Tiger for free. Give it a try...

  17. It's the operating system, stupid! on Intel Flaunts Mac mini Knock-off · · Score: 4, Interesting

I was a Dos/Windows (then to some extent Linux) user my entire life. I now am the proud owner of a Mac Mini. I haven't booted into windows once since I got it. I got sick of all the viruses/spyware/malware in windows and the fact that , althought windows gets the job done, it's not enjoyable to use.

I would have NEVER bought a mac had they not released the mini because I was not about to pay a premium for hardware when I don't do any graphic design work or play many games. So all these companies that are trying to release a Mac Mini killer are barking up the wrong tree when they just release a traditional pc with a small footprint. It's the operating system, stupid! I don't have an answer for them because I just don't think linux is ready for prime time yet, but I am evidence that people are ready for an alternative, but it has nothing to do with the fact that our computers are too big now. If apple had released a $499 machine that was the size of a G5 tower, I would have bought that as well.
