ok, if you had read the article you would find that they think it is scary that it is so simple to create a virus like that, not that 'heavyweights' didn't do it for more money.
I don't have a solution, but I do have something to add...
There was an exhibit near me not too long ago, and they gave out headphones. The thing was though, all the headphones were listening to the same feed. This was a problem because you'd have one massive croud listening to the same feed and going en masse to each exhibit, it was a bit of a clusterfuck. So you'll need several different feeds to prevent a logjam like that.
Actually, Just install the latest service pack and then install Autopatcher. It has all the updates, hotfixes, and some cool extras all rolled into one scripted install so you can just start the install and walk away. I've used it and I can say that it makes life a million times easier.
There are versions for 9x all the way up to XP. You could fit everything onto one cd, and if you wanted you could even script that install. Thanks Autopatcher guys!
brother, if you wanna karma whore you gotta work at it, copy/paste will not get you mod points. Here ya go, no pics, but you can read the specs and background info etc....
being an independant agency means of few things. First of all, the members of the commission are elected to staggered terms, so Bush could have only nominated 3 members of the comission so far (1 per year). Also, independant agencies can only have a simple majority of either party - if there are already a majority of Republicans on the commission, then Bush would HAVE to nominate a Democrat for the next seat. Finally, if Bush really didn't like what the commission was doing, he could only remove them FOR CAUSE. That means he can't just remove them at will like he can to purely Executive agencies, if he had an agenda like you imply and tried to remove a member, it would be a HUGE political stink.
All that I ask is, if you're going to post flamebait material, at least do your research first. Thank you.
I would think a lot would have to do with the content of the emails, we're they offering legitimate deals or not? If they were looking to scam people, then I think possibly they could be charged under 18 USC 1030 (a)(4) which is is more than the "mere hack" required in (a)(2).
Usually people are charged under (a)(5) which pertains to outsiders 'hacking' in and causing damage. The damage part is essential and I believe the minimum amount of actual damages required is $5k (forgive me if that's wrong, i'm doing this from memory). Although to be honest with you, as most slashdotters know, the damages are always trumped up in these cases - a company can go out and basically buy a bunch of routers or whatever and say it was to "Re-secure" their network and that will be considered damages. See United States v. Middeleton 231 F.3d 1207 (2000).
This has nothing to do with "trusting" a computer. Think about it...how many times have you gone into a class and there's no assigned seating, but what do people do? Every one will sit in the exact same seats for the rest of the semester. It has nothing to do with trusting a computer, it has to do with humans resistance to change.
If you're going to be projecting you're going to lose a little clarity, so make sure you get an HDTV projector like a refurbed Piano HE-3100 HDTV projector for about a grand. Also, don't skimp on the screen you get, I recommend the Luxus Deluxe Screenwall - it has great reflective properties and microperf so you can put your center channel directly behind the center of the screen for the ultimate movie effect! Hope that helps.
If you haven't seen it already, a pic of Anakin after he is burned and charred is here. Definetly a spoiler, but pretty creepy. (yes, it's the real deal)
Dr. Flammond: "A year ago, I was close to perfecting the first magnetic desalinization process. So revolutionary, it was capable of removing the salt of over 500 million gallons of sea water a day. Do you realize what that could mean to the starving nations of the earth?"
Nick: "Wow, they would have enough salt to last them forever."
Not only is the 7.6% number a shame, it's nearly insignificant to what the RIAA is claiming is happening to the CD market. If you haven't already seen it, watch Lawrence Lessig's "Free Culture" lecture from the 2002 OSCON, it's friggen brilliant. (heads up - it's an 8mb flash presentation, but is well worth it.)
Looks like gmail is really really real. Here's a blurb from msnbc:
Google spokesman David Krane, reached Wednesday night, admitted that the "color and personality" of the press release -- which is dated "April 1 UTC" and includes phrases such as "millions of M&Ms later, Gmail was born" -- "was indeed in the spirit of April 1" but said that Gmail was a serious product.
Instead of packing up and running every time something happens that you don't like, why not stick around here and fight for what you believe in? You can start by sending a few bucks to the EFF.
You do own domain names, well at least if you live in one of the 12 states that are under the jurisdiction of the 9th Circuit. Read Kremer v. Network Solutions
Here is a direct link to the large trailer. Just right click, save as.
I don't have itunes so I couldn't get the fullscreen version, someone wanna post that (if it's even possible - fairplay maybe)?

The TCO for Windows for the vast majority of slashdotters however is still steady and holding at "free".

You drink some plutonium while I sit and watch you while sipping on some coffee, if I die first I'll apologize.
Caffeine is more toxic than plutonium
Congratulations, you just wont he most asinine statement of the day award!
Since agent orange contained either kerosene or diesel, I find it hard to believe our boys were chugging the stuff.
So you're the one that bought windows.
