  1. ControllerMate on The Best Mac OS X Software Tools · · Score: 1

    http://www.orderedbytes.com/controllermate/

I wish every OS had a program like this, because I've been able to use it to replace all of the annoying drivers (I'm looking at you, Logitech) for all the USB input devices I own. It also works on devices that don't have Mac drivers, like a lot of the more advanced keyboards. I have a logitech G-15, and though the display doesn't work on the Mac, thanks to CM all the extra buttons do, and are easier to reprogram and use than with the native Windows driver.

You plug in a usb device and bring it up in ControllerMate. It shows you a list of all the inputs. Any time you hit a button or move an axis, that specific control lights up inside CM, and you can then drag it into the programming area and set it to do whatever you want - key input, axis control, run scripts, launch apps, just about anything.

I wound up paying the shareware fee on this one within 20 minutes of using it, not because I needed to (actually, for what I needed it to do the free version worked fine) but because I was so impressed.

I don't think they're trying to sell it to professional DJs.

If they were, it would cost $2500 instead of $250. They'd also be selling it through specialty stores that are only open on Tuesdays between 12:30 pm and 3:53 pm, and are staffed by surly lesbians.

I think they're targeting the tinkerers and the wedding DJ types, the kinds of people that buy those Newmark "DJ in a box" setups and mixers from Radio Shack.

There's more to it than that, you have to figure out which of the first few questions they ask you is going to be the baseline, and do the anus thing when they ask that. The books go into a lot more detail about what the questions will be like and how to figure out the baseline questions.

That's one way to beat polygraph tests (there are other methods, I haven't read any of those books though), but this article is about voice stress lie detectors. These don't work at all and I'm not sure if there's any way to make sure you get a positive. See:

I can picture the scene where I setup my iTrip at home, on a quiet spot on the dial, and then drive up the road and wipe out somebodies listening pleasure.

These transmitters are so tiny that they're not going to win out over any kind of reciveable commercial transmission. So if you tune it to a dead spot, and then drive somewhere where a commercial transmitter is broadcasting, these transmitters won't be able to overcome the commercial transmission. You will be out of luck, not anyone else.

I've been using something similar for years with a CD player and now with my iPod. For you to ruin someone else's radio pleasure, they'd have to be so close to your car that what they hear on the radio is the least of anyone's worries.

You do realize that this show is 10 years old, right?

It was very original when it came out, for the first season, anyway.

After John K. was fired/left the show it went downhill very, very quickly. It didn't so much go downhill as it just dropped off a cliff, actually.

I suspect a lot of the people here complaining about it saw later episodes, from the time when the new writers realized they couldn't be funny, so they just went for the five year old gross out humor (which the good episodes had, but they didn't rely on it).

However, if you can watch "Space Madness" and not laugh your ass off, there is something horribly wrong with your brain and you should probably have it removed.

Freespace 2 came on 3 cds and the full install uses 1.2 gig of disk space, though you can get it down to 1 gig by not installing the high-res artwork. I haven't seen any game demos that come close to that. Were you thinking of something else? I think FS 1 used a lot less space.

I'm happy about the source release, there are some fun mods out there for this game, but they've been losing steam recently. I hope this will add some life to those projects.

Anyway, to confirm disk usage I had to pull out the cds, and now I'm installing it. So much for my free time this week.

Actually, I just picked up a couple of dead Mac SE's on Thursday, and I was going to do the fishtank thing to one of them, and send the guts on to the recycler.

These things are dead as doornails. One actually has scorchmarks on the video/powersupply board, and that's the one that at least boots, but doesn't display any video. Talking to some mac repair people, it appears that fixing them isn't really practical, and most likely impossible. I might be able to get 5 bucks for both on ebay, or I can do something fun with them, and this project might be a good thing to try.

Though I would agree with you if they were working. I also have a completely functional Mac Plus that will not be ripped apart.

I think (not totally sure though) that Creative was thinking was that you'd be able to use existing portable cd player cases/holders for this thing. However, it doesn't really work that well in that situation, because the buttons are all in the wrong places.

I've also wondered why they made these things so damn big. I'd like to see one opened up and see if (as I suspect) there's wasted space in there. It could be a great product if it could fit in a pocket.

  23. Toy Story 2 in Digital on Lack of Digital Screens for Attack of the Clones · · Score: 1

I saw Toy Story 2 in digital at the Edwards theaters at the Irvine Spectrum. The main advantage I saw was that, despite the fact I saw it about two weeks into its run, it was still clean and bright and sharp, with no dust, scratches, and other crap that winds up onscreen after a film print has been played over and over again. Compairing that to the print of LOTR I saw the other day, I would have to say it's a pretty good benefit. LOTR had visual pops, lots of dust, and the soundtrack came out of sync with the movie several times.
