I have most of the Tolkien books, including almost all the middle earth histories. I quite like what Christopher has done publishing and editing his fathers works.
The Silmarillion is absolutely amazing in my opinion. Most of the time, any changes Christopher made are either italicized or footnoted.
OTOH, I'm also a huge fan of Frank herbert, and I believe I have all of his books as well. I find brian herbert's books to be trite, simplistic, and read much more like a book based on a screenplay (IOW, Crap).
The two are worlds apart. I'm excited for the new tolkien book. I wish brian herbert would quit butchering his fathers works.
hey, that's good! I quote in full from NineNine, give him kudos for this (see above)
"Unfortunately, while he stood as a model environmentalist, he now stands as an example of the dangers of directly interacting with wild animals."
Why is this unfortunate? I think that this is fortunate in two ways:
1. Stupid people are less likely to mess with wild animals. That's good for the animals.
2. People are reminded that no matter what kind of technology we have, nature is going to get ALL of us in the end, and there's a good chance that many of us could be easily wiped out by something as massive as a hurricane or as wild as a stingray (apparently). It teaches people to be both humbled and awed by nature. That's good for people.
Good one mate!.

the fact that his childs name was an indigenous species of his native land is a good thing IMO, not a bad thing. (weed is a very subjective term, in fact I like most things that get called 'weed', not just pot)
Now, the fact is I've made as much fun of him as most folks, and I thought the 'crikey' quote was a good epitaph, but it is sad nonetheless.
I'll hoist a beer to him at the bar tomorrow, that I know.
Debian Sarge is now stable, (which means the package versions are weeks old, not years) and they have released an amd64 port for it.
(debian plug)
I'm thrilled by the quality of the official release of sarge. It took less then an hour to fully install and configure and update (I use the net installer cd's) with complete gui and all my preferences from my previous installs of the testing and unstable releases.
My experiance only covers the x86 and amd64 architectures, but it has been virtually flawless at autodetecting.
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc on Monday said it will shift to using Intel Corp. microprocessors in its Macintosh computers, severing its long relationship with International Business Machines Corp., which had supplied chips to Apple.
Apple said it would move all of its flagship Macintosh computers to Intel processors by the end of 2007.
Apple has publicly expressed frustration with IBM as a supplier in recent quarters. IBM had problems producing enough working versions of its PowerPC 970 chip, which Apple calls the G5. Also, IBM has yet to produce a version of the G5 that consumes less power and would be suitable for use in Apple's laptop personal computers

Another of the reasons Truman agreed to drop the bomb, was to show/warn russia.
At the potsdam conference, truman alluded this to stalin directly.
>>About a week after the bomb had gone off in New Mexico and it was clear that Truman was going to have this weapon, Truman approached Stalin at the Potsdam conference and very carefully said to Stalin that he had this new weapon. Much to -- to Truman's, ah, dismay, Stalin was very passive in response and Truman did not know exactly how to interpret this. This was not the reaction that Truman clearly wanted from Stalin. What we know now is that Stalin knew exactly about the development of the bomb because of Soviet spies at Los Alamos in New Mexico. We also know that as soon as Stalin walked out of that room after the conversation with Truman, Stalin immediately got in touch with the man who was the director of the Soviet atomic bomb project and said that he must get to work and accelerate the project.<<

I find that random playing of my 18,000 songs (all are legally mine, purchased in cd form) nets some really bizzaro combinations, but more often then not, the juxtaposition of say, megadeath with bach, or miles davis with lords of acid is very interesting.
I'm totally new to xfce, I've only been running it about a month, but I vastly prefer it to kde/gnome and it kicks the hell out of every other 'light' windowmanager I've tried so far.
The more I use xfce, the more I like it. I can call any kde/gnome apps as needed, but I like the speed and the cleanliness of the desktop.
the right click= full linux kmenu really kicks ass imo. I've also noticed that xfce is much better at always placing an entry in the gui-menu when I install a new app. with KDE, it is very hit and miss, imo.
I guess that makes me a bit of an xfce fanboy, oh well. (shrugs)
This is ot, since I haven't got my radeon 9500 pro videocard working 3d under debian-amd64 sid yet. I don't game under linux yet. hopefully soon!
:quote:Konq is oh so close to being better than windows explorer. In fact I'd go so far as to say some elements of it are a solid step out in front. A little more refined layout, and more powerful tools for KDE, a slick GUI for ACL's and it could really put some hurt into Microsoft.:endquote:
I so agree with this statement! I use Konqueror more then I use FF or Mozilla, and I find it an exceedingly good browser. I really miss it when I work on windows machines
:quote: Linux can go for about a month at a stretch, before Konq and Moz are just crashing all the time, and Open Office starts to sporadically refuse to open.:endquote:
I don't agree with this statement. While I agree FF is a bit less stable then I'd like, I'm finding that a kdeinit daemon starts to get wonky on one of my machines, and has to be manually kill -15 about every 20-25 days or so, but no reboots have been necessary on my machines in months. I've only got an uptime of 16 days on my network because a power outage two weeks ago. I should invest in a UPS.
I'm surprised you arent running fluxbox or icewm on that machine, it'd be far 'snappier' in its response, and still be able to launch kde apps.

if it's ram that's the problem just use the cheat code knoppix tohd/dev/hd* and knoppix will write itself to a single file on the disk, without overwriting anything, and free the cdrom. You just need 700 meg of free space on the drive.
I've run knoppix on everything from a cyrix 400 mhz to my current rig, amd64 3000. Ive used it with everything from 64 meg of ram to a gig.
I have no problems getting sound to work with debian Sid. I use SB audigy 2 cards, and feed both a tos-link stream and an analog stream from both cards.
I've been using Sid for a couple of years now on multiple machines that run 24/7. Other then very occasional problems where I have to manually remove something that is old and b0rking aptitude upgrade, it's been flawless.
AOL did have a version of their browser that used Netscape instead of IE.

I've noticed, that if you have cookies blocked from doubleclick, the mozilla/firefox browser will sit on a web page for up to 2 minutes before loading. This is especially noticible on financial web sites, and news web sites. Doubleclick is causing this, not an error in the browser.
;;; It appears Linux is just going to fracture in to people only using KDE apps, and others using only Gnome apps, and geeks using a bunch of quirky splinters. As long as I stick to just KDE apps the consistency and interoperability is pretty good. Maybe I could just stick to GNOME apps though the consistency there is not as good. Its just unfortunate you have to ignore two thirds of Linux applications if you don't want to cope with a hopeless hodge podge.;;;
I don't see this at all, I run kde 3.2 and use gnome apps all the time. There is no appreciable lag besides starting open office or firefox for the first time. This system is by far faster and more responsive then the comparable machine running win 2k even. XP? doesn't stand a chance. Visuals-based, KDE 3.2 beats XP hands-down.
And the above is from direct comparison with the same machine. AMD 2400+ xp cpu, 1 gig ram, radeon 9500 pro.
The War of the Jewels would make an absolutely fascinating and riveting movie, if they had the guts to make it long enough. I'm thinking, six or eight hours at least.
The kinslaying alone...
I see fifteen/twenty different movies could be made from the silmarillion easily.
The story of Beren and Luthien.. That would be awesome, or Turin or Tuin. etc etc etc.
I wouldn't be adverse to seeing jackson film more tolkien, he's created by far the closest picture yet to what 'I' see when I read them.

Debian Etch is officially stable. see www.debian.org
I'm downloading the xfce4 install image cd right now.
I'm also aptitude dist-upgrading my server from sarge.

My amd64 3000+ runs flawlessly, I'm currently at 19 days uptime, but that's only because of a power outage here.
