Ok, as some of you may (esp. in Dalnet #linux) or may not know, I am a system administrator for NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmosperic Adminsitration). I am responsible for the main webserver (Running Solaris & apache) and several auxiliary servers (running RH 7.1, apache & a load of other Free/Open Software).

One reason to use Free/Open Software? At least where I work, it's less hassle to get permission to download & install free stuff than it is to fill out endless forms, get a purchase order, etc.

At about 9:30 am, I was leaving out the house when my sister told me a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I was stunned a little but I assumed it had been an accident and so planned to look up more info after I got to work...

Then, on the way to work I heard about the SECOND plane. I was a little confused (wondering what the hell is going on, thinking it might be a joke) when I hear about the Pentagon (my mother works in that area). I tried to call home but my cell phone (Sprint) couldn't get through. I then pulled over at a pay phone (Verizon) & tried to call home but I still couldn't get through. I had to sit down on the ground for a few minutes because I almost threw up. I got to work but was told that non-essential employees were to leave (I work at a Federal Center near DC). I could see the smoke from the Pentagon. My mother made it home ok after spending about 5 hours in traffic. She said that they were watching the World Trade Center on the news & felt the Pentagon get hit. I got home and have basically been either online, or watching TV all day.

My prayers and condolences to all those that had family & friends in the planes or buildings, and to the families of all the firemen, police, emergency workers believed to be lost.

Let's think a little bit more about security, performance and customization, maybe RH isn't the best option for this. Of course that RH is wonderful for desktop machines, but, for admins...

Red Hat (or any other distro for that matter) is secure *if* you take the time & effort to do so (for me, that means uninstall any unnecessary services/packages, install the latest updates, and install/configure portsentry). That, plus a little common sense makes for a secure RH install (not 100% mind you, but close enough).

The original story by Richard Bachmann (aka Stephen King) was WAY better than the movie IMO. Also, there was another Bachmann story called the Long Walk, about a sick contest where contestants literally walked to death (they were followed by Army troops that would shoot them if they walked too slow, or if they fell down & didn't get up). I bet that show is in development at Fox right now...
