  5. You're not alone. I haven't cared about the Olympics since I was about seven years old (1960). That was back when there was no cable television and with so little to watch, most people defaulted to watching the Olympics. If I remember correctly, the coverage was not even live and we watched it in black and white.

She's always been at the right place at the right time and more of less "fell" into success.

  11. Re:Enormous tax and administrative burdens on Should You Pay Sales Tax on Internet Purchases? South Dakota Law Could Be The Test (pcworld.com) · · Score: 1

I've always thought that internet sales should be taxed according to the tax rate where the product ships from. It's just like going to another state and purchasing the product in person. Sure, the other state gets the tax and your state doesn't, but that's just part of life. If the politicians in your state object, tell them to lure those internet companies (jobs!) to your state by lowering taxes.

If it worked like that, then companies selling online would tend to have warehouses (jobs!) in states with zero or small taxes, and few if any warehouses in states with high taxes. Makes sense. Be competitive or die.

  13. Oh, great! Just what we need, emotional and neurotic machines.

The big hurdle that computers have to jump is creativity. Yes, I know that some have "created" art and music already, but it really sucks. For some art you just need to have emotions, something computers and machines may or may not have in the future.

Nope, there was actually a bit of truth in what he said. We do seem to have too many people at the bottom who are inherently lazy (all people are lazy to some extent), and we also have taxes that suck the blood out of the people who are working.

It's not just Federal taxes. Every level of government has its own set of taxes. When you add them all up, what you pay is staggering. Even low income workers are paying outrageous taxes.

  23. No, freeways are paid for by the people, not the government. When people pay taxes and things are done for the benefit of all, that's not socialism or communism. That's just government doing what the people want done. In other words, the whole reason we have a government in the first place. On the other hand, when people pay taxes and that money is given directly to other people, then you are getting in the realm of socialism. There is a difference, even if so-called socialists deny it.

Each year I travel and work in dozens of cities in several states. That involves working with hundreds of people, and this subject comes up in conversation all the time. Let me tell you, people who work and support themselves are sick and tired of giving their money to people who sit on their asses all day and do nothing. It's almost reached a breaking point. The government really shouldn't be thinking about pushing them any further.
