  7. Re:Mobile Gaming on PSP UMD Format Cracked · · Score: 1

I looked at both the PSP and the DS, and wound up choosing the PSP. The dual screens of the DS is a nice novelty, but the system feels clunky and cheap to me, and using the stylus while trying to keep your fingers on the controls was difficult - I found myself cradling the stylus between my middle and ring fingers and then making a fist when I needed to poke the bottom screen (there's just something wrong about "fisting" a gaming device). I liked the larger single screen of the PSP better, and the image quality of the PSP's screen is undeniably better. The general look of the system is far more polished, too, in my opinion, and while that may not be a factor for some, I sort of like the little "wow, that's pretty" phrases that the PSP causes people around me to say when I pull it out. While the DS pricetag is FAR more appealing than the PSPs (~$150 vs. ~$250), the improved quality of the PSP made it worth the extra expenditure to me.

Adding to the list of PSP pluses is the ability to play MP3s (true MP3s, not re-converted proprietary crap). Using a USB cable (the PSP has a mini-USB connector), you can copy MP3s straight to the memory stick and use the built in player. As far as I know, the DS doesn't have this ability. The movie playing ability is somewhat lacking on the PSP, though, as it only plays a proprietary format. There are several free converters out there, but it was a pain to get them to work for me. Still, it's better than the complete lack of media playback that the DS offers.

Of course, as always, look at the game library before you make a decision - the PSP has a very limited selection now (although many more are on the way - google for info).

If this is the interface I'm thinking it is (I cant confirm because the site is already down) the windows that are displayed in the 3d space aren't updated in real time...basically, the window manager takes a screenshot of the window and puts it up. This is great for static windows, like a file listing, but doesn't do any good if I'm chatting on Gaim or watching a movie.

I thought telemarketing to a cell phone was illegal, due to the fact that you are charged for both incoming and outgoing calls on a cell phone. As I understood it, it's similar to the anti-junk fax laws, which were put in place because you pay for the ink and paper that is wasted.

An interesting side note -- the main presenter made a comment in that same conversation that he was "positively humbled" by the volume of people that were involved in the development of open source projects, and not only that, but the degree of intellect that these developers display regularly in the various IRC channels and usenet groups.
