    Furthermore, most OSS work has outstanding useability, but lacks the bells and whistles of non-OSS work. Those bells and whistles which are often added by marketing often make the product less useable.

    I obviously wasn't clear enough in my statements..which is what I get for typing this quickly between calls.

    I was trying to say that "most people's (ie,consumer users)" view of useability ends at how well the gui looks.

    Sorry for the confusion, and no, I wasn't trying to troll.

    Useability is something you add on the backend of a product to market it. What they really mean by useability is a nice GUI where you can get a mouse trail going.

    Useability is great in most OSS work, extremely efficient and powerful...it just has a higher learning curve to the uninitiated user.

    But for a forum where people discuss the development of sweeping new technologies and hail the coming of the next techno miracles...there sure are a lot of technophobes on this forum.

    What are you people so afraid of? Why are you so negative on new technology and exploration? Is it earth shattering now? No...but it could be.

    I meant $40 Billion, just typed Million by mistake, then repeated that mistake. My point stands though, $40 billion is nothing. The U.S. Government spends almost 5x more then that yearly on defense.

    And before someone starts in on, no, I'm not saying we spend too much on defense. I'm saying we have plenty of money to invest in projects with such a grand potential for return.

    Just because we can't say, The ISS is going to revolutionize us because of _______. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try like hell to fill in the blank.

    But $40 million is nothing. The possibilities of space exploration, research, null gravity mechanics and engineering are limited only by our imaginations.

    If someone told you a government project in the works for almost 20 years had cost us $40 million would your initial reaction be that this was a large amount of money or a great deal?

    Considering the staggering number of scientific discoveries that await us outside of Earth's atmosphere, you could tell me this was a $40 million a year project and I wouldn't blink.

    I think the bulk of the people bitching about this price tag lack vision and spend too much of their lives living today without giving any thought to living tomorrow.

    Amazingly, I've always felt that their website just wasn't that great. It's an ok website, but there are a lot better ones out there. Their in- house applications for ticketsales, scripting and phone use are top of the line.

    Ironically though, Ticketmaster owns one of the companies that I feel has the best websites available on the net...citysearch.com

    But I do. Even those people who come here just to bitch about this post went and read the link. Most of them even got that little lift out of seeing a cool toy they liked.

    I think people cause themselves more stress and concern trying to complain about SPAM, then they receive from the SPAM itself.

    I mean really, if something doesn't interest you...just go away, leave it alone.

    is a dangerous place to not be pro-open source. But I simply do not think that open sourcing of software is reasonable.

    Yes, it allows people to make 3rd party improvements or alterations to your software more easily. But it also allows people to exploit the software for their own uses.

    Intellectual Property is something worth protecting.

    Did you miss the part where I said it will be a dual mode system? If optical conditions are not favorable, it will operate in cellular or digital modes (like existing cell phones).
