  1. Re:I love watching people reinvent the Mainframe! on UC Berkeley Lab Examines Cloud Computing Obstacles · · Score: 1

You seem to be operating from a very narrow definition of "the cloud".
The cloud is not a central location, it is distributed.
Service Oriented Architectures allow an application developer to cherry pick services available from disparate distributed locations knowing that the interfaces for each will be well defined (using WSDL or the like) and the transport mechanism ( e.g. SOAP over HTTP) will play nicely and not require custom translation of inputs and outputs.
There are plenty of good examples of SOA or "the cloud" other than some naff web site which badly replicates something I can do locally. An example I recently coded is an enterprise wide token based authentication which allows field engineers access to our remote equipment via a web service. So
    - engineer - contacts "cloud" (i.e an RBAC webserver), gets token, attempts handshake
    - kiosk - sends token to cloud gets credentials, allows access.
    "Mainframe" not necessary.

Technical marketing? What distro was that for? If you know anything about using a laptop on the go then you will know that by far the greatest limiting factor is battery life and this laptop offers the ability to type and do email on a full size keyboard with "ten times the battery life". There is no negative "implied marketing message" just because it is not full featured Linux. I see nothing but positives in the extra features offered on this laptop and any travelling business exec used to making do with a Blackberry until he can find a socket to recharge will appreciate this.

I was in China in November 2001 and reliably informed that I could go up to the Russian border and purchase plutoniom which was readily available on the black market. I visited the largest mosque in China during my time there and wondered what would happen if I put a small bomb together, blew up the mosque and claimed responsibility for the IRA in conjunction with ETA and Greenpeace. It just seems so easy for a single person or small group to alter the course of world history. Which is why personally I believe what's necessary when dealling with issues such as global terrorism like this is moral responsiblity and not shows of force.

"We Americans claim to be a peace-loving people. We hate bloodshed; we are opposed to violence. Yet we go into spasms of joy over the possibility of projecting dynamite bombs from flying machines upon helpless citizens. We are ready to hang, electrocute, or lynch anyone, who, from economic necessity, will risk his own life in the attempt upon that of some industrial magnate. Yet our hearts swell with pride at the thought that America is becoming the most powerful nation on earth, and that she will eventually plant her iron foot on the necks of all other nations. Such is the logic of patriotism."

Yes but they certainly shouldn't be prevented from doing so. If there were no legislation in place to allow for media archival in this manner then it could be argued in court that they cannot do this at all and that the granting of a licence is beyond the powers of the government. In your analogy a roads authority needs to acquire a compulsory purchase order before removing someone from their land. This is not granted automatically but a process is set out in law for the provision of such.
