Self important geeks thinking that playing CS all day somehow makes them more politically aware.
I know that the military uses special versions of quake and such to teach some elements of teamwork during combat, but please, can we finally just admit that, for us, these consumer military games are useless fluffy fun, no matter how "realistic" they become?
A lot of people seem to think saying "IE sucks, use this" is a good strategy.
I hate to bust your bubble, but unless you give someone a reason to switch to your recommendation, you're just babbling at them.
Give they WHY they need to switch to Mozilla. Show them how great tabbed browsing is. Show them the integrated search. Mess with the config a little and show them how much faster it is. All of the things that make you *want* to use it, regardless of whether IE ever existed.
Spyware, security, exploits, etc. are just noise to most users, and consequently most bosses.
Your objections to flash are not mine. My main objections are:
Sites made entirely from flash break the forward/back functions. They also break the ability to bookmark a page, or send a link to a page to someone else. This destroys what little UI consistency the web has by default.
Flash encourages designers to make their own controls, which often operate in ways inconsistent with established web controls. A great example is the scroll bar. How many backwards flash scroll bars have you seen? I've seen too many. Macromedia has been trying to deal with this lately, but it's still an issue.
Flash sites suck bandwidth. I'm on a 28.8 right now and there's not much I can do about it. I don't like waiting 10 minutes to find out I've been loading a frivolous intro. (don't even get me started on flash intros)
Content First.
The live updating you describe in your journal can be done with Javascript. I've done it. And it doesn't require any plugins.
I have seen well done sites which incorporate flash, but they are never built using *only* flash.
And yes, flash is good for video. But that's video, not site-building.
i don't see voice control of computers ever making it past the novelty phase for those who can use a keyboard and a mouse. it's noisy. it's too slow an interface. you can't do it while on the phone. etc.
News Flash for all you amateurs: There is no browser war. If your web site doesn't work on someone's browser (especially the MOST USED BROWSER) then your site broken and you will lose visitors, sales, etc.
But most of you are just "coding" whiney blogs so i guess that doesn't matter to you.
Build to standards, test for compatibility: Tables for layout, CSS for everything else. IE/Moz/Opera/NS4 on PC/Mac you can be pretty sure.
Anyone who would build to "standards" despite browser demographics or would impede use of their site by any visitor based on their browser is a moron.
Yaknow, I don't 'remember' it but that scene got played a few times during the retrospectives on his death.
That was a pretty amazing moment.
Nah, O'Reilly wouldn't do well as a candidate.
In a presidential debate, you can't just tell your opponent to shut up and then cut his mic.
Ever since CD-ROMs started being bootable, I haven't really needed them, although I think it's bad juju to run a server without one.
Yeah, nevermind that Chomsky is also a world reknowned logician and linguist.
Blah blah something about babies and bathwater...
Here's hoping this one's a little less insulting than "Lawnmower Man".
I saw The Faint at the 9:30 club a little while back. They use a lot of analog synth (Korg ms2000 I believe).
Amazing show. The bass was so low it shook the peachfuzz hair on the back of my neck, and I did notice my chest feeling a little odd.
I guess this gives a whole new meaning to the term "Slam Dancing"
How?
Has anybody *ever* been gotten away with distributing encrypted files without somebody cracking it?
It's like giving the entire geek world a good, hard puzzle with an irresistable payoff.
Do you still think computing is unnecssary for the poorest of the poor?
Do you think proper spelling is in order when making insultingly assumptive statements?
...read this "Soldiering in Space"?
And then think "Wow! What kind of gun is a FLUX!?"
pfft.
So. What.
?
Install behind one. With everything dropped. It's that easy.
The revolution comes when the right people will profit from it. And not before.
Irreducible complexity/intelligent design don't even pass muster under the most basic requirements of scientific inquiry and logic.
Affixing the word "theory" or "science" to them doesn't help. They predict nothing, they tell us nothing.

Delusional mouse jockeys get on my nerves.

Making his regular workday scenario more complex is not going to win you a convert.
Usability = Use. What you're talking about is why people don't want to change.
Maybe, but what if we get hit with a major disaster (like you-know-what), which prompts those in charge ground all of the planes?
If anybody's depending on that network for anything, this could be Bad.
Throw some jumbotron advertising on the sides of these and I just might start going to seedy chinese food bars in the rain.

Wow.
Flash.
Browser Maximizing (which is especially stupid on my dual monitor box)
Saturnic rollover navigation.
Crappy Audio loops.
I'm surprised there's no butterflies following my mouse cursor...

People don't develop better video codecs so they can email their moms home movies.
...Peter Jackson, who singlehandedly blew away the Star Wars franchise...
really? I could have sworn there were a few actors involved...
