Sounds like you might have been stuck in the pure research vs. applied research conflict? I guess there will always be people who fail to see the value in pure research, of simply asking "what if... ?" OTOH, you gotta pay the bills at some point.
IMHO, pure research is almost like the place where art and science come together.

Amen, amen, amen! Few things could be so frightening as the UN getting its filthy paws on the 'Net, especially with Comrade Zhao (or any interchangeable lackey of the Chinese Communist Party) running the board.
I may have to forward this item to my congressional representative.
"Afterall, they provide the best slave labor in the world right now."
Thank you very much. I am very disturbed at observing Mainland China's growing industrial might; I do not see Mainland China contributing to the peace and prosperity of mankind as they take a larger place in the world community. IIRC, there is also a long, strong strain of racism and xenophobia in Chinese culture too. IMHO it's dangerous for China to get so powerful.
I second that emotion. Especially when you consider that the author is a reporter for the Washington Post and is almost certainly NOT hurting for cash, she had ABSOLUTELY no business still running a 'puter with Win98.
Who wants to bet that she wouldn't DREAM of wearing any article of clothing dating back to 1998? Wanna bet that she has probably updated her TVs, stereo system, cars, cell phone, etc. multiple times since 1998? Then why is she still using a beater Win98 machine? And from the sound of it, as her ONLY machine?
It's the 21st century, folks. Time for the general public to own up to the fact that they're going to have to be generally savvy to computers, just as our grandparents became mechanically literate as the automobile became a part of society.
I like the quote from the Seagate blog--VERY much. Makes me think of the John Lennon song "Imagine"; I have never liked that lyric about "nothing to die for"--as if that were a good thing!
Sorry, I fat-fingered the last post. Anyway, I'd like to see for myself whether the newer PDAs are all that. I want to see all those excess iPaqs on eBay within 24 hrs to drive the price down so I can afford one!

I am embarassed for my employer. We are now being run by accountants rather than IT professionals.
You are a wise and dangerous fellow. Hope I get to work for you someday!
"Entertainment is the killer app"? I hate to say it, but in that case maybe the hardware needs to be optimized for pR0n delivery.

Hmm, around here there's a _reason_ the coffee's free.
