Well it's not that non-trivial. There are many oses out there that have come and gone over the years.

The real problem is getting people to start making applications for your os so it becomes attractive to the end-user. that's the critical mass.

Unless they are going to build a windows-compatible os?

I don't think you can justify the price premium of an Apple based on design and manufacturing costs.

Apple simply charges a price that (some) people are willing to pay - they position themselves as a premium product and therefore they *have* to charge more - even if their costs are no higher than any body elses.

There's a very interesting article on Joel Spolskys site about pricing.

It's probably a very personal thing and depends a lot on your personality. I myself have left 4 jobs without another lined up (only once out of disgust, the rest was when I decided to travel).

I have always found good employement again (though the last time I had to spend a few months looking and I admit this has made me hesitant about doing it again). In retrospect all of those decisions were good for me, some of them amazingly so.

I actually thought she was a pretty good CEO, even though she had a lot of tough decisions to make.

In a speech that she gave in around 1998 (if memory serves me right) she stated that the most important thing for any working person was to first make yourself financially independent. Then you can make the decisions you really believe in, without fear of being sacked. I think many of the (unpopular) decisions she made at HP may have been down to that philosophy.

I respect that, it's something I have done all my career, never putting myself in a position where I am dependent on my pay-check.

Stuff *I really like* I end up getting the DVD in the end (if I can). In fact this type of action is benefitting the artist by widening my exposure to their works (and that's the purpose of any real artist, isn't it?)

After all if it can't offer that, then it will only ever be used for illicit purposes, by people who are willing to put up with all it's crappness, becuase they are scared of "being caught" (ie pedophiles and al-quaeda).

However mostly just pedophiles, because al-quaeda (and oher more sophisticated networks) will have their own encrypted communication network set up already.

This would be a big problem for me if I was a freenet developer.
