I for one have always been interested in perpertal motion machines and the related laws of physics. I believe so that if we could just improve effeciency we will achieve very near pertual machine like effects. I meen if we are using engines that are only 40% effiencent and we can improve that to 98% then that is still very possible. IMHO
Just because there are more corn fields then people doesn't meen they can't have a great security conference. I'm sure there are also people from both coasts traveling to this thing too.
I can see this as being one of the best uses for the form factor. It appears it won't win any speed contents, but I would rather build a PC to do audio/video stuff then buy an appliance that doesn't do everything I want it to.
Ive seen some "good" buys on there a few times, but have never made an actual purchise. The prices seemed too good and I don't know anyone with good comments, and only 1 person that has shopped with them.
Could this be the start of a grass roots organization similar to the WTO, UN, EU and other multi-national groups that are surposed to help with global issues?
Can't you see it now the "United Spam Busters" USB!
I've been waiting all day for a post about this here on/.. Its been on Extreme Tech all day! Usually slashdot wins the news race, was someone sleeping today?;-)
Very true. Probably a big part of this is the thought of "a enemy of my enemy is my friend" type thinking. It doesn't matter (at least short term) if they profit from it, just anything that can start breaking into the Microsoft controled world.
No, I never did really, I understand its not a criminal matter, but consultants should do something to protect themselves in these types of situations.
Not fixing itsn't illegal in upon itself. However if the company knows about the flaw(s) and continues to market the product and not inform the public about that flaw then I'm pretty sure they are legally responable. Although it may be only after a civil suit, which comes to the root of the problem. Noone will know until there is a major problem. Then the user will sue the company and the company will sue the security consultant. Who loses? Well at least the security guy it seems like to me.

I think this is why it would be great for occasional gamers, or someone that would like a "try-before-you-buy" type situtaion. Pay for a month and try a bunch of games and then if you are going to play a game over and over then drop your subscritpion and buy it.
What struck me reading this was he mentioned that he has worked under the terms of an NDA and the company decided not to fix thier software. How can this be discovered? If he goes to the police surly this goes beyond the NDA.
If anyone could clarify this I would appreciate it.
No hard feelings, I don't really care either way. I just thought I'll lookup the article to make sure I wasn't imaging it. If you read it though you will see that it says at the store. Now if you went to Office Max or Staples I bet it would be chaper, but I don't know and really don't give a care;-) On the other hand the red 747 is only abailable at the site for the marked up price.
It is true, just not as extreme as I said. I found the article at http://lcb1.uoregon.edu/cmeeske/readings/swingline.htm
It says
The red staplers have quickly become the most popular item on the Swingline Web site, which is the only place selling them and lists the price as $29 each. (The regular black Swinglines sell for as little as $15 each in stores.)
I must concur Office Space is my fav movie! They also did a great article in the WSJ a few months ago about the red stapler. I guess Swingline didn't make any in red, just black. So after getting thousands of calls for one they decided to do it. The black stapler sells for $9.99, the same exact model in red sells for $49.99 and on their website only, at least I think that was the prices, but I could be wrong.
I think they are going to be around awhile longer, but compaines are already starting to migrate to newer languagues. This is one reason why I haven't even considered learning COBOL. I believe its a lot like steel workers. Its a good job, but if you are just starting its better to find another line of work.
This is definatly a big thing for me. Before DSL or cable was avaiable in my area I had two phone lines and by the time you pay for a POTS line and an ISP account you are only a few bucks more for a DSL connection.
Although now I can barly wait around on a dialup connection...
It starts with decsions such as this and finally everybody is too small except for the federal government of the US of A and then they realize that 80% of their users are now running an OS with penguin for a mascot!
I was thinking that this guy is flying his plane, crashes, and dies. A bad story in itself, but then when you factor in this guy was creating a revolutionaly mapping systems to explore other planets this one person takes on a much larger "life". Imagine if life, or even something such as water was proven to exist in our own solar system, but now because of a personal plane crash this won't be discovered for hundreads of more years?
I have to stop thinking too deep as it gives me headaches....

Probably job security. They have to have people that patch the patches to the those other patches that were ment to fix the O/S.

I think this just meens that Americans should "move up" to arguably more advanced jobs then just a standard code monkey.

I wonder if its possible to take the salt and sell it to salt companies, like a benefical byproduct?
