Too bad companies that are more open source friendly can not afford to do the ads that MS can. However I don't think their ads here on Slashdot are helping them too much, but as long as they are paying for this site and not you I wouldn't complain. It might be a good thing if they started offering a pay version so there would be no ads.
Sometimes cost is a bigger factor then uptime, at least with home users that don't want to spend thousands of dollors and have to have a CCNA to admin their home router for their 3 computers...
I thought it was interesting to see them using open source and GPL work, while creating the RIAA and sueing anyone and everyone they could find.
Perhaps individual music creators will release their music and videos under open source...
I believe this is a major issue with the steel industry also. The unions have worked to get these high paying jobs that require no skill. As long as you can breathe you have a $30 an hour job with full benefits and a fat pension after 30 years. Now if you go to China its $2 a day per person. That may seem awful, but $2 a day there goes much further then here. They are glad to have those jobs. Here work ethic is so low. People expect to do nothing and recieve a high paycheck.
All of these "patch" issues should be listed and sent to management with a recommediation of switching to a more secure *nix alterntive.
When will the truth beat out the Microsoft ad machine?
This may help to further mainstream open source efforts. Everyone wants to get paid for their work and this looks like the next logical step in the process. Hopefully the concept is well executed though unlike some other recent ventures.
I could see racks of clusters. Perhaps running linux Beowulf ? Powering it all and keeping it cool and free of dirt/dust from the desert could add drasticly to the logisticts of it.
Thats a good point, I hate it when it keeps going back and forth and I'm never quite sure what direction its going. However once you design such a system you will need to collect the data over the period (such as a year) and that can be a lot if you do the whole range of the satalite!
What happens though if I forget to charge the batteries? Will I still be able to use my clothing? If we put computers into everything, everything just might start crashing, at least if it has anything to do with MS.
Pass me that linux tie!
Many companies have data centers in multiple locations with private lines connecting them. I would have hoped the government would have thought of this much sooner.
Reminds me of a few months ago when they were saying the FBI has not been able to hire many computer experts because they could not pass the required physical tests.
Thats an interesting thought. Instead of having to make them shut down, you offer to buy them up. Is Google becoming as powerful as Microsoft (or has it already happened?)
If they keep saying how bad MS is then they should not be using their software. I'm not a big Salon reader myself so I really don't care what happens to them, thousands of other companies are failing too I'm afraid.
It seems Microsoft is trying to strong arm their way into linux. Is this good or bad though? If anything its getting more PR for Linux, but will they try something underhanded?
Even a linux distro with docs can be 5 CDs of 650megs each, thats 2.5gigs. What I wonder though is do they take a 30 day average, or disconnect you until the next day? I would be pretty ticked if I had 4 distrs to update at 2.5gig each and I got a huge DSL bill the next month.

But if this is true you could also say that they are discriminating against Slash Dot readers. Couldn't you?

Interesting point, can bad driving humans teach their robots to drive better? Especially when they are competing against time?
Could be interesting with a built in camera you could do live web serving on location, without any special equipment.
I understand the concept, but still I think it easier to remember the basic facts instead of some 20 word phrase.
They probably also have a monthly subscription. Thats the thing that ticks me off about the current commercial PVRs.

If they knew what was good they should be more afraid of that computing power. We can send leaflets to their high-tech sectors with specs!
This is the main reason I HATE paying for software. When I load it up I'm already getting messages to buy the upgrade!

Theres nothing wrong, some do it "wrong", but then people buy games from that "other" company.

What about email relays in India? What are they doing about THAT?
I thought that with digital broadcasting now that satalite radio was pretty much dead anyways.
I aggree it is a great game, but shouldn't the government be putting that money to better use? I meen it's just a recruiting tool isn't it?
