Being a second-gen immigrant of Canada, I still know bunch of people back in the Asian countries that want to move to North America.
So why don't I tally up your votes of places that American want to move to. Then I can tell my friends that, "hey, if you guys want to move to America, and the American wants to move to say Panama, then why don't you just skip the middle step and move to Panama instead" ~
Chinese should land on Mars. This way, hundred of years later, they can claim that Mars is "historically" Chinese terriroty, and setup intergalatic missles aiming at Mars to demand re-unification with the renagade RED planet.
1. SARS originated from China. Taiwan (and Hongkong, Canada, US) were just unfortunate that SARS spread there due to China's ignorance and negelegance.
2. Taiwan hosts one of the leading medical team that developes SARS treatment and vaccination.
3. Or maybe we should just dump all of our money to save the 3rd world kids. How's that ??
I read tons and tons of chinese novels online (illegal OCR copy though) when I was in 2nd year undergrad. I'd often stare at the screen for more than 3 hrs and I'm ok with it. I don't see how that is different than staring at the screen for 3 hrs playing computer game.
In fact, I find it more comfortable (posture wise) reading on the screen than having to hold the book in your hand and read it.
It is even better if you want to eat snack at the same time you read. How many of you can hold the book in your hand, flip pages, and eat dinner at the same time without worrying about food staining the pages? But with e-book, you can read and eat at the same time, and all you need to do is to press the "Page Down" button whenever you want to flip pages on a e-book. (ahhh... lonely bachlor life...)
Of course, that is just me. My girlfriend still can not get used to reading it on screen.
The pirated music CD's from China also has CD cover and the lyric booklet. Yeah, it may not be as high quality and artistic as the original music CD cover and booklet, but do you think the mindless teen pop followers care?
Likewise, for those who download games off kazaa, would they care if the pirated game has no manual, or only a black/white photocopied manual?
And why would you want to pay $50 extra just for the pretty box and manual anyway?
HOW IS THIS ASCII ART? Check Simpsons ASCII archiv

It merely converts the picture to lower resolution image by replacing each pixel with a symbol like * or @ with different colour. This is cheating. Anyone can write a program that does this conversion.
The real ascii art uses only black text. And by using different ascii symbol, it can create the black and white and different shade of gray to protray an image.
>It is cute to think that an intellectual game >of reflex and strategy could become mainstream
Let me guess, there isn't really a chess club in your high school or university ? By all means chess, or GO, or poker are the "video game" of the generation before TV became popular. Who's to say that a well designed computer game can't become mainstream or even become a professional sport?
Try going to South Korea for a change. They've got 2 TV channel dedicated to professional gaming. Just cuz you don't watch professional gaming on TV doesn't mean it's not popular somewhere else.
Yeah, why bother saving some dumb panda bear that eats only bamboo and can't even take care of their offsprings? There are plenty of cows and chickens around for people to eat. They are more practical and we should spend our money on them instead.
Just because a language is dying doesn't mean that we shouldn't bother saving it. A language defines one's culture. A culture is never lost when the language is kept alive. We want to preserve as many culture as we can the same way we want to preserve as many species of animal as we can. It adds the richness to the diversity of life on Earth.
I grew up in Taiwan with Taiwanese as my mother tongue. There were vast literatures and poetries written in Taiwanese. However, during the Japanese colonial period, the people were forced to abolish their language and speak Japanese. When Japan lost the war and Taiwan was taken by the Nationalist in China, people were then forced to speak Mandarin instead. This cut off the culture root and the younger generation can speak only Mandarin now. They don't know the Taiwanese history. They don't know the Taiwanese literatures. They don't know the Taiwanese poetries. They don't even speak Taiwanese.
Now you are telling me that we should just leave this language to die? Then I propose that we just leave all the endangered species to die!
2. Maniland threaten to bomb Taiwan if it claim to be an independent country, not refused to reunite.
The situation right now is that Taiwan government (a.k.a Republic of China, ROC) still believes that it is still the rightful owner of the mainland. However, there are pressure inside the island to abolish this notion and instead recognize that ROC only owns Taiwan only.
By declaring ROC only owns Taiwan, it implicitly recognizes that PRC (People's Republic of China, i.e. Communist China) rightfully owns Mainland. It also implicitly recognizes PRC as a separetely country by Taiwanese government instead of seeing PRC as rebel scums that temporely occupy the mainland.
The irony is that, Communist China is ok when Taiwan see it as a rebel scum. Communist China is ticked off when Taiwan wants to treat Communist China as a nation.
Actually, No I wasn't being sarcastic... I was trying to search an example at 4am in the morning to show how support your enemy is utterly stupid, and I completely forgot about US actually did support Iraq...
So a better example is "can you image American businessman supporting Bin Laden so that he can build...."..... Oh wait!.... America did support Bin Laden before!.... hummmmmmmm.........
>IMS Research says that by the end of the year People Republic of China >might become world's biggest laptop manufacturer. The plants >will be largely owned by Taiwanese manufacturers, though. >Taiwan is current #1.
The problem with business man in general is that they drift where the money is, and care less about the impact to their own country (if they even consider Taiwan to be a country in the first place, regardless if they were born there).
The impact to the shift of labtop industry from Taiwan to China (by Taiwanese company) are two folds.
First, China gains a competitive edge to the industry, and to the overall economy of China and can later be used to bargain against Taiwan. (Heck, China already is using the new found money from its booming economy to buy 3rd world nations' support against Taiwan)
Second, Taiwan loses leadership in the industry, the economy suffers, unemplyeement rate increases due to the moving of manufacturing plants to China.
Most Taiwanese people still fail to realize that China is still a hostile nation towards Taiwan. And China still threaten to invade or bomb Taiwan if Taiwan refused to reunite with China.
God.. I mean... can you imagine American business man supporting Iraq so that Iraq has more money to build missles to aim at US ??
It may not be the same paper that will be published in Foundation of Physics Letter in August. But it is a complete paper on Peter Lynds' discussion on Zeno's Paradox.
Just because Shakespeare grew up in a small town and never received any formal education does not stop him from writing Hamlet.
It may take 4+ years of College training to learn most of the existing definitions / derivations / equations. But it only takes a genious to come up with a eureka in physics and philosophy.
For those of you who don't understand the article (myself included), it maybe because the article is just a rather crappy summary of the work. The actuall paper is to be published on the AUGUST issue of "Foundations of Physics Letters". Wait to read it then criticize.
The two biggest assumptions that the author made are that Robot will be cheaper and more efficient than human being, thus replacing human labour.
This is not necessarily true.
We all know that robot/computer is good at doing long and repetetive and tedious calculation and work. This made robot excellent in assembly line where each robot only perform a specific function at a time.
But take cleaning as an example. Granted a cleaning robot can mop the floor 24/7. But now suppose somebody stick a gum on the floor. Can the robot clean it up? NO! Now we have to install a scraper, and visual recognition to identify "gum on the floor". Extra Money! Now suppose somebody left an empty cardboard boxes on the floor. Can the robot clean it up? NO! Now we have to install robotic arms. And program it to identify boxes, and pick up and flatten the boxes, and walk to the dumpster and dump the boxes. EXTRA MONEY!!
That's not forget these cleaning bot need maintance too. These highly skilled trained maintance/repair technicians don't come cheap.
Now you ask yourself. Should I get a cleaning bot, or just hire some guys working at minimum wages ??
The advantage of a robot is that it can be programmed to do a specific task extremely well.
The advantage of a human is that he/she can be trained to do infinite number of half-assed jobs.
Yes.... now they can finally make better 3D CG porn now that they can simulate and even teach computer how to have sex in better ways and different positions. Hey, isn't the whole point of "EVOLUTION" to "REPRODUCE" more offsprings??
Only ~10% of people approve of reuniting with China. ~60% wants to stay the way it is. ~30% wants to declare complete independence.
If you don't believe my poll, that's fine. But even if your poll is right. It indicates that only 1/3 of people really wants to reunite with China. 2/3 of people wants to be a nation that is complete separate from China (whether it should be called ROC, or Taiwan).
A sidenote: ROC, or Republic of China is the official name of the government in Taiwan. Those who wants to remain the way it is wants to keep this name (note, this is still considered by commie China as a sign of separation). Those who seeks "independce" wants to change the official name to "Republic of Taiwan" (ROT) (because the name "Republic of China" has caused so much confusion internationally, such as on slashdot. Most people refer to Taiwan as Taiwan now and not its official name to prevent this confusion). So basically, only 1/3 of people wants to reunite with the commie China. 2/3 of people, whether they want ROC or ROT, wants Taiwan to be a nation of itself.
Really, the point of voting in person is to provide a safe place so that no one sees who you vote for except for yourself.
What measure did they take to ensure that no one looks over the voter's computer screen and bribe/threaten the voter ?
And I for one, welcome global warming here in Canada for all the fresh water, new land, warmer beaches ...
Yes, it was a "technical" problem that the ban was lifted.
Now the problem has been resolved ^^.
Nothing to see here. Move along ~

You've obviously haven't seen the Britney Spear's guide to Semiconductor Physics.
Here: http://britneyspears.ac/physics/basics/basics.htm
This shows how quantum physics can be fun when "dressed up". Well, I guess geeks just want to look at Britney's pictures anyway ~

What good is longevity if you are not rejuvenated?
Living up to 500yr old, does that mean you live as an adolescent for the first 100 years?
Or does that mean you become old by age 60, and live the rest of the 440 years as grumpy grandpa Simpson in an old folks home ??
Moreover, how many more years do you have to work to make enough money for the retirement saving now that you can live up to 500 years ??
I for one, welcome our chicken overlord to be the judge of the beauty contest.
