Last time I checked there are now web agents that you can deploy and have no problems with. It may not have an agent for your products in use but it will be a matter of time for the most part.
For me the quality loss of myth isn't aceptable (hr10-250 HD tivo's) and that is not going to change untill firewire recording from digital cable becomes possible.
Being in the UK I'm not fully clued up on the US situation, but I understand you guys can get direct Digital feed into the PC via ATSC cards and (I think) Cable Cards , thus no quality loss and no encoding overhead. Here in UK we can use DVB-T cards, and Satellite cards. We cant get a direct cable feed into the PC without going via analogue though.
Capture cards with onboard MPEG encoders (the kinds you *want* to be using with MythTV)
Bear in mind that Digital TV cards dump the broadcast MPEG2 stream directly. In this case, there's no advantage in having an MPEG encoder unless recording from external source.
For those of you who think that $videoBymail vendors will suffer when Video-on-Demand hits the market, think again. You need to remember that quite a few folks out there that are building up impressive home video libraries thanks to services like Netflix and Blockbuster.
I think those folks actually hurt their business model. The company pay postage both ways and these folks usually have a fast turnaround and max films out. They prefer people to sign up and do little - much like the majority of gym memberships.
It's a gray area because Sony claims it is DRM, which is illegal to remove.
I thought it was illegal to circumvent? Could they release something that simply cleanly uninstalls it, so that the PC is in the same state prior to insertion of the CD? Thus not circumventing but allowing people to clean their PC's without having to give email+details to Sony?
Personally, I dont mind protected CDs that much, Theoretically, one could rip them and return it to the shop for a refund saying it doesnt play on one's PC. Double-bubble..
Check out JDiskReport as an example of what a good developer can do with Java. Very useful program. Even our IT Support guy loves it..
I have a suspicion that some apps are slow simply because they are coded by 'GUI' oriented coders who dont prioritize writing efficient code (ie minimising object creation etc) as its often harder to maintain because its not the immediate solution that comes to mind?
When my firm wanted a program to index some database tables but needed to run on different platforms and against different databases I wrote it in Java using JDBC. They were all worried it would be slow, but it blazes along and is completely Database bound in execution time.
My bank (SunTrust) won't let me pay bills unless I'm using IE or Netscape. So I installed the Firefox User-Agent Switcher plugin to let Firefox tell the website that I'm using IE. Firefox renders the online banking web pages well so there's no reason they couldn't support Firefox. They're just too lazy to test it.
That's like telling an ugly woman she's pretty so you can get laid.
On so many levels....
Ya know, I used to feel the same way, but then I finally realized that for most applications, the browser as an application platform is actually better and results in a better user experience. With a web-based application, every user can rely on:....
.. getting charged twice by over-eagerly clicking "[Authorise Payment]" and then really screwing everything up by hitting the [Back] button.
I did the usual Micorsoft Update (and update and restart and update), Ad-Aware install and scan, Spybot install, schedule and scan, Spyware Blaster install, uninstall Symantec, install AVG-free, schedule and scan, remove IE shortcut from the desktop, install Firefox with a shortcut on the desktop pointing to it as the "new" IE, and give a quick tutorial (with a printout) to them when they came around to pick their machines up.
I'm assuming you are using the 'free' versions of this software, otherwise igore the rest of this message!
Bearing in mind you are a non-commercial organization - and a worthy one - I would double check the licenses for these as far as educational and non-commercial organizational use is concerned. And perhaps a complimentary email to vendors for clarification where necessary?
That's fine, but if we begin to compare that in severity to physical crimes, where people get injured, where violence happens, that means that we have forgotten everything. If we jail more severely (lifetime) a computer cracker than a rapist (usually 2 years jail), then we are totally decadent.
We're nearly there. Largescale fraud can easily attract very long sentences, both sides of the pond. Isn't there some British lady potentially looking at a life sentence in the US because she was deeply involved with a fraudster?
Let me explain... You are comparing OO to MS office
No, I was simply responding to your post where *I thought* you was comparing this guys negative response to slagging off the download process to the previous guys resonse for slagging off the OO install process. I came to this conclusion based on the summary of your post. In which YOU said,
So the lesson here is that if you critize any open source software for being hard to download and install then you get rated a 5. If you critize any MS software for the same reason you get bashed.
I was simply saying, without resorting to namecalling, that the two critiques (this one and the OO one) got different scores,IMO, not because one is OSS and the other MS, as you clearly assert , but because one was
related directory to the software distribution, and is determined by how the OO guys packeged it up, and the other was nothing to do with Acrylic or Microsoft but an internet glitch unrelated to any aspects of the software. Hence the OO critique gets a good score but the Acrylic critique gets a lower score.
So that is why I think you conclusion is wrong. If you think I'm a dumbass for it, then good. I still think my reasoning for the different scores of the respective critiques is better than yours..
More so because the differing scores, and your "lesson" above, are the inverse of what one would expect from the/. crowd. So maybe its a good thing.
So there:p
Do you remember a few days ago when some commenter was bitching about how the open office installer came as a zip file instead of an exe or msi? He was rated a five!.
IMO that was a valid point and related directly to the OO installation process.
So the lesson here is that if you critize any open source software for being hard to download and install then you get rated a 5. If you critize any MS software for the same reason you get bashed
No, in this case, the problems were download problems and nothing to do with the software or it's installation. Whereever the fault lay (hosting servers, transparent proxy or end-user/client) is hard to say, but it shouldn't be used to set the tone of a review IMO.
Samba is not a competitor to Microsoft. Samba does not run on Microsoft Windows. Microsoft does not sell or market it's SMB protocols separately from Windows. Microsofts SMB protocols have not been ported to any other operating system on which Samba runs [samba.org].
The bigger picture is clearly, people can, and do, swap out windows file servers for Linux ones. This affects MS revenue in this area. Without Samba it just woudn't happen.
Shame on this LIGHTNING UK! idiot for not giving true meaning to his application and using it only as an ego-boost, I just hope he had fun while it lasted.
I wouldn't go as far as calling him an idiot. His personal situation, and what he values as important may be different to others. Fighting "evil mega-corp" could be low on his "to-do" list at this time in his life. However I do think his farewell posting was a missed oppertunity to have a clearly worded and concise dig at the expanding scope of DMCA vs fair use etc.
Hopefully he'll sit down and pen something suitably edifying to replace "no-comment" in the near future:)
Yup. Assuming Remedy ARS then use Remedy mid-tier.

The general recommened patch levels for both NT (6) and W2K (4) are both even?

My HP 8450 has Full Linux support + Network Printing and Web Management.
Partly speeding and partly seen as an easy source of revenue for the various boroughs.

The license file for Remedy Action Request System used to be called ars.lic

Always train said spouse that vigorously watching porn is a rite of passage, and they are free to share in the experience.

SpywareBlaster looks OK for teachers.
Spybot I would confirm with author. They seem 'edu' friendly, from their tone.
AVG License is perhaps slightly ambiguous in this case. Schools are non-commercial but they are 'Organizations'.
Ad-Aware not free for educational use.
You may have omitted your firewall of choice but most of them have similar organizational clauses. I think Outpost Free may be OK.
I suspect you dont actually notice the black women that are quiet because ...er ...they are quiet.

I like VLC but it needs some serious GUI/HCI work. Esp when trying to fine scroll through pr0n.

We also have Samba on finance package. Buy now, and pay off the balance by June 2015.
The bigger picture is clearly, people can, and do, swap out windows file servers for Linux ones. This affects MS revenue in this area. Without Samba it just woudn't happen.
