  1. 20 years and that's all we get?! The console with DOS 25 years ago was more powerful than what we have today! After decades of waiting for something _at_least_ as good as we had back then, I got sick of waiting and found ConEmu. It's a wonderful console. I can't imagine ever going back to the built-in Windows console.

  2. Re:Yelp is a disgusting company on Yelp's Six-Year Grudge Against Google (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

Uh... I spent over a decade in the advertising industry. The eyeballs always are the product. This shouldn't be a shock to anyone. Yelp is no different than any other advertising platforms in this regard. We never referred to users as "customers". That's a totally backwards concept. Customers are those that pay you, that is, the advertisers. Users are sometimes given the impression that the company cares about them, but internally, we never did. We cared about the customer, the advertiser.

Here's a concrete example. It was often the case that the search results for my company were TOO relevant. That is, the precise results that user was looking for showed up as the first listings. This hurt our bottom line quite a bit as users' eyeballs would focus on the top listings, ignoring advertising. We fixed this by decreasing the relevance of the search engine. Eyeballs covered more of the page, including our customers' advertising. It was a win-win for the customers and for the company. That's just how the world works.

  6. This reminds me of an article I read saying that most people in the U.S. have never actually tasted cinnamon, that the product sold in the U.S. is actually cassia a relative of cinnamon, but not actually cinnamon. Supposedly, once you try the real stuff, you'll never want this fake stuff again.

Another similar issue: I grew up putting what I thought was maple syrup on my waffles and pancakes. It was only after I got married that my wife told me that she's not down for that corn syrup and that we needed to get real maple syrup. Once I tried the real stuff, yeah, it's hard to go back.

  12. Walmart ship-to-store sucks! on Walmart Plays Catch-Up With Amazon · · Score: 1

It's really interesting that this article just came out. I just got back from Walmart where I was attempting to pickup my son's birthday gift. It took me over an hour of waiting to get it. The online system never sent me an email that it was ready for pick up, but instead said that it had already been picked up. It even gave me the option to return it. I went into the store to figure out what was happening. It hadn't been picked up, but it took them over an hour to find the item.

What more disappointing is that this wasn't an isolated incidence. Over half of the time that I have items shipped to the store, I have a similar experience. Last time it took them two hours to find my package, and that was after I had received an email asking me to go pick it up!

As I wait, I see other customers having to go through the same thing.

I'd love to have a browser that blocks ads, but I wonder if it's going to be a resource hog. I used to use Chrome, but had to ditch it because it would end up consuming 300 - 400 MB on my 4 GB phone (2 GB usable space). Now I use CM Browser and have never looked back. Fast, low resource utilization, and still very featureful.

You guys are focusing too much on the game. The Minecraft, as an icon, is valuable in and of itself. Disney has Mickey. Nintendo has Mario. Sega has Sonic. Microsoft could possibly be buying Steve. If Steve, as an icon, can last decades into the future, it will be well worth the price tag to Microsoft.

Think Nintendo has made at least $2 billion off of Mario? They certainly didn't make that much off of Mario Bros. or even Super Mario Bros., but has an icon, I'm sure Mario has been worth way more than that.
