  1. Re:This just goes to show all of you... on ReplayTV and TiVo Compared · · Score: 0, Troll

Well said. Just to reiterate what the parent said:

open source will ALWAYS provide much better alternatives to
closed systems like Tivo and Replay. Seriously... it's 2003 for god
sakes! Replay sounds like something dreamed up by a 50s ad exec trying
to get you to buy a new color TV even though your black and white set is
dtill perfectly useable. In this day and age, old style television
should be phasing out and giving way to a networkable solution with more
end user control, not less. Users should be able to copy, alter, and
share their programming as they see fit. There should not be any more
commercials. Don't these companies get enough money from the products
that we are beholden to purchase just for survival? Is there really a
need for them to market more crap at us that we don't need? Who NEEDS
an SUV if you are living in a city where the worst weather is 3-4 inches
of snow and you live 15 minutes from work? Who needs to "own your own
business: internet kiosks. The way to wealth!"??? Why not just work
like the rest of us? There are ways to get rich quick, but they tend to
be either dishonest, unethical or at best a one shot deal that only
works for the first person who tries it. Instead, pick an open source
project, work on it and you will have made a much more valuable
contribution to the world than you would if you only think of yourself
and your own wealth. Wealth is a lie. Especially in the United State.
For all you repugnicans, get to a shelter and look those people in the
face. Tell them, "You can be anything you want, you just have to work
for it like I did". Tell them about the silver spoon you were born with
and see how much water your story holds. IF you are one of the VERY few
who actually crawled out from a situation where you started off making
$5000 a year and are now earning a six figure salary, then you are
exempted from this excercise. I will bet that makes up about .05% of
    you.

IRC is far better if you want to get a hold of some reallyh rare/unpopular stuff. The main problem with Kazaa and the like is that it mainly reflects the most pedestrian of tastes. Whereas IRC contains a lot more unusal content. As an example, when DalNet was still turning a blind eye to file transfers, I was able to acquire the entire first second and third seasons of Sliders. This program is as of yet currently unavailable in any format. However, I was able to download nearly all of the first three seasons and part of the fourth within the period of a month. They were also pretty good at keeping up with 24 and the Enterprise series. It was better than Tive because I didn't even need to remember to set anything. I'd just log onto an IRC channel and make the requests and get queud up with an FSERV. Was a thing of beauty... On the other hand you can't find ANY Sliders episodes on Kazaa.

To be honest I think this might wind up accelerating the development of new computing approaches since you will actually have people who understand computers more intimately. I think part of the reason for the stagnation in the field WAS the 90s e-Bubble. It attracted the sheeple who were solely interested in making money. Those people tend to NOT be very good technologists. The people with a real feel for technology who DO become rich usually do so incidentally.

You are correct sir. Kodak did change, but the world changed with them. Whereas before Kodak's competition was relatively small, Kodak is now dwarfed by the companies that have gotten into digital photography. "Joe Average" is much more likely to buy a camera from Sony at Best Buy than Kodak. Especially if the Sony seems to have more features (quality isn't imporatnat to Joe Average, only feature set) than the Kodak and the price isn't too different or is even cheaper. Kodak was able to define the world of standard photography before. Now they have become a fringe player in the digital photography world. Hence... lower sales.

  9. Kodak on RIAA vs The Economy · · Score: 2, Insightful

No... they have digital photography to blame. If people are happily making their own photos with Sony digital cameras, working on them in "digital darkrooms" with Photoshop, PSP or the GIMP and printing them out on Epson printers using photo paper made by Epson, that means fewer people using Kodak products. Sure the current lineup of digital cameras isn't ready to compete with real film for someone who knows the difference, but for "Joe America" they are "just as good" is not better because of how much cheaper it is to take a digital photo.

What a dull design. I don't understand why America never tries something a little more radical with their money. Australian money has a much better design overall. Their bills appear to be made of a plastic or paper/plastic hybrid. They also have a clear portion which would be much harder to counterfeit. But I think the best feature of Australian bills is that the actual physical width of the bill increases with the value of the denomination by about 5 mm per bill. That makes it so much easier to tell ata glance what value your bill has without needing to actually read the numbers. I, for one, would love to see the old fashioned greenback go the way of the T-rex.

There are some features that people who seem to write a lot of documents miss, but for someone who does the occasional party flyer, letter to grandma or even company newsletter, about 95% of the functionality they are looking for is already there.

(Auto service = Software Upgrades). Most people are primarily concerned with price and features (Oooh shiny!). Reliability and longevity are typically secondary. From what I can see Microsoft may be moving PCs into an area that will make it difficult to usurp control or power from them. It doesn't mean that Linux or other OSS won't run on it, but it may mean that they won't run LEGALLY on it.
