I think you're post is far more offensive than the one you are replying to. In every country there are some things that are considered to be government services and get paid for by various taxes. What is or os not on that list is a matter for the people of that country to decide on any way they like.

Why do you consider it offensive that some people in (I'm assuming) another country think waste collection should be a government service?

It's assumed in the wording. When read from the assumption that the FSF assumes copyright, the entire document reads through just fine. When read under the assumption that the author keeps the copyright, there are a couple of spots that don't make sense.

Legal transfers of copyright can not happen because they are assumed in the wording of something. They have to be explicit, doesn't the whole SCO Novel and who actually owns the code thing prove that?

Even if you think that the GPL doesn't make sense unless you assume something it doesn't mean that the GPL puts that assumption on a legal footing, it might mean that the GPL doesn't make sense.

DVD regions aren't actually about preventing distributors from competing with one another intentionally (as you say contracts stop that), it is about stopping people themselves from buying DVDs in regions where they are cheaper (eg far east) and then using them in Europe or the USA.

It is a way of making those in regions where DVD prices are higher buy at the higher price instead of importing cheaper DVDs.

Writing software can be both a service or producing a product. It depends on the type of software. There is certainly a market for producing custom software to order and that is a service, but on the other hand producing a web browser or a word processor is definitely not a service cause there are so many users wanting much the same thing so making one version and distributing it to them all is the way to go. In the open source world making money of this general purpose package is either relying on goodwill donations or providing some service to the users (support or subscription to some extra value that isn't open source)

You are in no way responsible for the use of code that someone else has stolen. If I steal some code from a company and then put it on the net and you use it, the company I stole it from can go after me and possibly people who were making and distributing CDs with this code on (I think only if they could prove that they knew the code was stolen and kept on distributing) but they can't go after you unless you continue to use the code after they have notified you it was stolen (and I think even that one would need a damn good lawyer to make it stick). The P2P situation has confused everyone about this somewhat because everyone is sharing copyrighted stuff and so everyone involved (unless you only download) can be persued legally.
