I last used E17 in a rather non-useable state about 2 years ago. I even more appreciate the work being done on E17 and hope it all comes to fruition in the near future. Simply: the Enlightenment team has a new vision for the desktop. The desktop, to them, isn't just about helping getting your work done. Its about an 'experience' and introducing efficiency.

I really want to see the Linux desktop move to the next level. I think what we need are some more apps which have a lot more "wow" effect to them. I hope this will mean tying in X.org at the toolkit level or something to give all apps some transparency and extra effects.

Yes, this doesn't help "get my work done". However, on the higher res desktops that we're working in right now, I personally prefer to work in a Word Processor than a text editor to write essays and books. Hopefully this will come soon!!

The effect I propose would be this: force Red Hat to remove any mention of what software is included on the box and on its website. Further, when installing the software and running it, RH cannot mention what software is running, nor can it claim title to the work. It would make them lose a large amount of recognizable software and therefore lead to sales losses.

If RH is simply customizing their OS, its making a quick and easy buck off thousands of other pieces of software they didn't have to code.

The only reason that the company was "well" off was with her is that it was a relatively strong company to begin with. She in no way, has the ability to build up a company like HP or to re-create it.

Fiorina was too unbalanced in her descisions. She would vote something out, people would be fired, and then she tried to retract saying "That wasn't such a good idea".

As someone who sells HP printers - as well as other brands - its sad to see the current state of their printer division. They are no where near as good as they were. The old printers were built like tanks. It gets harder to recommend their brand (unless someone insists).

Someone with direction and a vision needs to take over.

Simply do this: Write to ATI directly. Say that the game they sponsored is defective, and you won't buy their cards or Valve software in the future. I think TFA is slashdotted now and I can't get it. However, why not build more rigourous National secuirty standards before the plants are builts (again, I suspect they are, but given the lives at stake .. more is probably better).

Also, hurricanes have been striking with increasing devastation whereas the cold water of the Atlantic usually diminished the hurricane significantly.

California and Vancover have been having record rainfalls (each over 600 mm in a week). There's flooding and landslides.

So far, to me, it sounds a bit like freak weather we get every 50 years or so. If this is a sign of what's to come, due to global warming we're in for a rude wake up call.

What's worse: the brunt of the pollution stems from North American and European industrialization. I cannot image what would happen if India or China had a 2 or 3 car family (let alone, the emerging trend of one car as income increases).

With the increase in industrialization of many countries (in part because of consumer culture) and also because of economic expansion and the lower cost of the automobile (namely, in India and China) what can we do to help stop, slow down or perhaps (if possible?) reverse this trend?

  17. MiniDisc Player having to replace on Father of PlayStation Admits Sony Mistakes · · Score: 5, Interesting

Dupe or not, I didn't comment last week so....

I have a NetMD Minidisc player. I can apprecaite that Sony wants to enforce copyright, etc for its music units. As far as the box advertised 2 years ago, their OpenMG or SonicStage software was supposed to be really easy to use. So I bought a MiniDisc player. Having a RIO PMP 300 previsously, it was an improvment in capacity, quality and battery usage (it lasts much longer on a AA battery).

Having lost my original software disc (2 years ago), I've tried upgrading to newer software (SonicStage 2.0). I've tried for 20 minutes to upload songs to it -- importing music libararies ... no go. The worst thing is, is that Real Player was the easiest sofrware to use to update the MiniDisc player. If it weren't for RP, I probably wouldn't have used it (and taken it back). RP update servers seem to be down now, so I can't get the drivers for it.

I warn everyone who thinks of buying Sony, that they use many proprietary formats (the memory stick in cameras, etc). Sony has probably lost many sales from my peers (business and friends alike) as a result. Unless they clean up their act, I cannot recommend them, good as their products might be.

This has me thinking. Maybe IBM isn't trying to kill off MS or compete against it right away. Maybe its trying to take on Sun covertly.

    Consider this:
    1) Sun is using, ever increasingly, commodity hardware. The mobo's etc are definately "custom".
I might 'lose' on this point, but consider my other two.

    2) Solaris and AIX are probably comparable Unixes but OS X is gaining ground in other markets (NAS, SAN) which Sun couldn't touch because they were too expensive. IBM can push AIX (if it wants to continue it) on the one end for high availabilty server and/or promote Linux more. For the smaller companies with smaller budgets than want low maintenance and easy use Apple is their solution. IBM doesn't lose out since their CPUs are still being bought ... which to them is better than having a client buy AMD or Intel.

    And more specifically yet,
    3) This point specifically had me thinking of the SUN slogan. Sun wanted "their" servers running office computers and the databases. With dummy networked terminals providing a screen, no storage space and a nice looking OS. What if IBM is willing to accept that their servers and OS might not run the network or the desktops.... but THEIR chips will (using OS X as both the desktop and server OS. They still make money on the chip sales.

Wait a sec.... with a mulit-taking VM PPC chip, couldn't the server OS also run the desktop at the same time???? So there you have it. A SUN killer with a fast, high power chip running the corporate desktops in small/med businesses.
